Forgive my ignorance, but how can a team be flagged for 12 men in the huddle when they're running a no-huddle offense? As I understand it, Abilene Cooper was flagged for this in the Temple game.

i wonder if the refs consider any formation from which plays are called to be a huddle? otherwise, you would be right. the point of the rule is to allow defenses a chance to see what package the offense is going with so as to get the defense in place.

It has to do with how many players are within the hashmarks and whether that 12th guy is getting off of the field. I think.

in a no huddle, there are rarely more than 7-8 inside the hashes. the trying to get off may be the key.

Yes, 12 men in the huddle means 12 deployed players. no huddle or not...as opposed to illegal participation...which is if you run a play with 12.

A good example is when an o-lineman takes a defensive linemans legs out from under him. Usually at a side angle. Not good due to a lot of knee injuries.

A chop block is an offensive player blocking a defensive player below the waist from behind. When an o-lineman drops on a d-linemen from in front of him this is a cut block which is legal.
When a player cuts a defender that is already engaged with another offensive player this is also considered a chop block

True, but when the D-Lineman gets into the hole and the O-Lineman takes his legs out, its a chop block. This is where I see it called most of the time. Chop blocks are cheap, but legal like you say.

lol ya see this just goes to show that no ruling is perfect cuz one will say one thing and then someone else will say another...i guess it goes on what the refs think

In order to actually answer the question about the illegal substitution, more information would be needed. The rule states that if player A is in position and a substitute (player B) comes in for him and player A remains on the field for 4 seconds or more, that is illegal substitution. This is probably what has been called in the cases mentioned previously.
