Transfers hit SFA campus

Eight Division I-A transfers showed up to the SFA fieldhouse Thursday, the first day that Lumberjacks players could report for fall practices.
There are few projects and little baggage associated with these newcomers, according to SFA's first-year coach Robert McFarland.
The majority of these guys will be expected to come in and challenge for starting positions, immediately, the coach said. Any time you're dealing with transfers, you realize that they are transferring for a reason.
Will they jeopardize what we're trying to accomplish? I can say, without a doubt, that we checked out these guys thoroughly. Either they want to get on the field sooner rather than later or this was a chance to come back home.
Six of the players are from Texas. One is from Oklahoma and one is from Louisiana.
The list includes:
Stephon Rhea (5-10, 175), a cornerback with great speed who transferred from Minnesota. He will be a sophomore.
He played high school football at Klein Forest in Houston. His younger brother, Aaron Rhea, is a true freshman wide receiver for SFA.
Clint Latray, (6-3, 290), an offensive lineman from Clemson.
He played at Allen High School and will be a sophomore.
Jerome Brooks (5-10, 185), a running back from Purdue.
He played at Haltom City High School. He returned a kickoff 102 yards for a touchdown against Notre Dame last season.
He will be a junior.
Andrew Fleck (6-2, 260), a defensive lineman from Virginia Tech.
From Edmond, Okla., Fleck finished his undergraduate work and will take master's classes at SFA.
He has two seasons of eligibility remaining.
James Battle (6-2, 225), a quarterback from TCU.
He led Denton Ryan High School to three state title game appearances, winning twice, as a junior and senior.
He will be a sophomore.
Darrell Bennett (6-0, 190), a defensive back from Southern Mississippi.
From Washington-Marion High School in Lake Charles, La., Bennett was a starter for Southern Mississippi. He will be a senior.
Calcius Williams (6-2, 235), a freshman defensive end from Missouri.
Another player from Denton Ryan High School, Williams has four years of eligibility remaining.
Mike Benson (6-5, 265), a defensive end from SMU.
Benson has served as a backup in the offensive and defensive lines at SMU.
The Houston native will be a junior.
