View Full Version : Jamal Charles and The Ticket

I listen to The Ticket, 1310 AM in Dallas, the all sports station, from about 11AM till 4 or 5PM. They have been playing some cuts from an interview between J. Charles and Rick Renner of FoxSW during the All-Star game. The cuts are less that flattering of Mr Charles as they try to make quite a jest of his speaking style. He sounds a bit Cajun and his speach is a bit broken, but they, The Ticket hosts, have been brutal in their making fun of his speaking, saying "how can someone who talks like that have graduated HS, or how can he understand the plays, or it says alot about how Texas will recruit anyone who can run even if they can't count to three" and the cuts and slanders go on and on. Just thought I'd let you guys know what is going on on this "high-and-mighty" station in the name of humor.

the reply of the game was on this past weekend but I feel asleep. Does anyone have a link or clip to this infamous interview? Not that I want to make fun of him or anything I just want to see what all the fuss is about. Was it THAT bad?

2. things
1st and most important that is why i love ESPN 103.3, all sports and no BS it blows the ticket away.
2nd- he deserved it, I dont care how old he is, if you would have heard the interview, you would understand why they are doing what they are. He did not make himself or tu look very good.

another thing bout texas fans i love, they automaticaly assume you are a aggie just because you put down the beloved longhorns. Face it, you guys would have been all over him had he decided to committ to A&M, but cant handle the fact that someone is now putting down the high and mighty texas university.

Man this will not go away will it. Yes he was hard to understand but maybe things will get better. He is still young. What I think is sad is when so called "educated" people cant communicate like they should be able to in their job. People think degrees and titles by their name make them superior. Not all but some. We have a supposed college educated weather woman here in Lufkin that cannot speak without messing up at least 5 times a broadcast. I thought it was just the jitters the first time she did the weather but I was wrong. Many months later she still messes up far worse then anyone else I have ever seen in my life. I would much rather hear Jamaal talk then Jene' Young.

Ok, then I should have said I guess your not a Texas fan then! I could care less who you put down! I was just asking a question! I watched him play a couple games in High School and I think he is a great back! You don't see me talking about J. Lane because he went to A&M do you? I don't make fun of people if they are hard to understand! High and Mighty farmerfan!

People need to leave this "KID" alone man. His a freaking "KID" that is very gifted with a football in his hands. His not going to UT on a debating scholarship.. No way does he need Adults making fun of him on the radios or tv. For CHRIST sakes man !!! I dont care if your a UT or Aggie or whatever. Jamaal Charles is a "KID" and people need to get over it. He doesnt deserve this at all.
Most of us so called Adults would of been choking up all over the place also if we were 17 years old again and someone stuck a "mike" in our face on tv that had millions watching. I promise you that.
Man this is pathetic.
I would love to meet some of these so called ADULTS that think its cool to make fun of a 17 year old kid on radio !! They should be ashamed of themselves to be honest with ya.

Anyone who is getting ready to live on their own and go to school is no kid.
This will be the media's only opportunity to hammer a longhorn player considering that Mack will answer all of Jamal's questions for the next 4 years :D

I really dont know what you mean Wide. But, if you really have a problem with Charles call Coach Brown and tell him that you want Charles "ship" revoked ok. If not, then dont root for the kid when his running the ball at UT or dont watch the games because they have a kid that aint that great a speaker ok.
Is he 17 ? 18 ? I dont know. Whatever, his still a "KID." Just his getting his first major listen on how some ADULTS can be totally 100% Jerkoffs at his expense. The kid is a innocent kid that is just trying to do the best he can.
Sorry if the "KID" upset you because his not a debating champ or not a great speaker.
Now spare me you "FLIP" comments ok. Like I said, if you have a major problem with Charles,, then turn the tv off when his playing for UT.

First of all...take some of that bass out your voice boy. Your talking to a grown a$$ man. I'm not 18...
Every time he opens his mouth he represents a University and a football team that I am a huge fan of...and have been for 25+ years...So I would say I have a voice...And considering this isn't Nazi Germany...but instead...AMERICA.... I can say whatever the (bleep) I want to say.
Since when is wanting a "kid" to learn how to speak properly a bad thing.
It would be different if I was just blasting him like aggy is....I said he needs to get some help...he needs practice...that's all. He sounded like a damn fool...You cannot dispute that. He did...and thousands of people agree with me on that one.
As far as not cheering for him...or not watching the 'Horns...who the hell do you think you are? Oh so now...you can just tell me what to watch. Since your controlling my TV...you wanna chip in on the cable bill? I'll watch the 'Horns every Saturday and pray nobody asks Jamaal a question...and cringe if they do...how 'bout that?
You must be some sheltered Mama's boy if you think 18 is still a kid...last I checked 18 years old = man....not kid. At least it did when I turned 18.

I'm with you man. This thing has gotten out of hand.
I hate the elitism of some people. Could he speak better?...of course, but so what?...why do people have to make fun of him for it? That is simply pathetic that they would do that on the radio.
It's bad enough to make fun of someone in normal, everyday living, but to do it in such a public forum as 'The Ticket' is just plain pathetic.
It's one thing to comment that 'man, that kid could use some speaking lessons,' but anything beyond that is a cheap shot and is childish. For them to make the comment that "...how can someone who talks like that have graduated HS, or how can he understand the plays..." is just unbelievable. Texasfrog got it right...those "adults" should be ashamed of themselves...but they're probably quite proud.

I think anyone who makes fun of the way someone talks is a truly sad and pathetic individual. The ability to convey your thoughts verbally is not necessarily a direct correlation to intelligence. Plenty of people have difficulty speaking when the camera is on them, and Charles hasn't had to do much of that to this point (certainly not on a big scale).
People who make fun of others just to make themselves feel more superior really piss me off.

I have a problem with people harping on a "KID." None of us probably no Jamaal Charles other than what we read or have seen on tv. Before the kid had a "MIKE" in his face.. Alot of these same people were screaming and yelling how such a great football player he is.. Now many of these same people just want to make fun of him.
Like I said.. Nobody on here probably knows Jamaal Charles. We werent raised in his shoes. We dont know what the "KID" had to deal with growing up and what hardships he may of had to overcome. God blessed the kid with great athletic skills and hopefully with some hardwork he can grow up to become a great asset to society and reach many of his personal dreams.
The last thing the "KID" needs is alot of so called "adults" making fun of him. I can promise you that many of those so called "adults" have severe "self esteem" problems if they like making fun of a kid.

Listen Wide. I'm not claiming to be a SEAL. I was a SEAL and still am a Active reserve SEAL. I was a member of Seal team 2. I did three platoons Delta, foxtrot and echo platoon. Winter EUCOM to ( SERBIA), 2 x MARGs. You've never seen me post it before because I dont usually post it beside my Username "Texasfrog". But, seeing so called "tough guys" making fun of "KIDS" really gets my blood pressure up.
I didnt chase women m entire time on active duty (right at 9 years). Although I did my share. We were extremely busy most of the time and many places I was at the women werent anything to really chase anyway.
I've read several of your post in the past and you always try to come across like some kind of billy bad "tough guy" to people. Really funny.. for ya.
Anyway, just say a prayer for some of my former Seal team members that recently lost their lives in the "STAN". Also, say a prayer for my former platoon mate Neal Roberts who lost his life in operation Acaconda a few years ago. His widow wife and kid needs it.
Then say a prayer for all the other service members laying it on the line rounding that corner and not knowing what awaits on the other side ok.
PS. Jamaal Charles is still a kid and doesnt deserve "IDIOTS" making fun of him.
Thanks, ST-2.

I'll say a prayer for YN2 Melissa Barnes that died at the Penatagon on

yeah I had friends that died too. I don't need to go on a message board and ask for sympathy. In case you didn't know it's in the dictionary between shampoo and syphillis.
If you are a SEAL..then good for you bro. But you went through the same freakin' boot camp I did...wore the same crappy dungarees as me....and saluted the same flag. So wow....again not impressed.
It was unncessary to even bring it up. Really who cares?
If you are...then good. But anyone who has to spout it out and brag about it ....kinda loses the Bravo Zulu's when they do that.

For athletes, it's far, far different than for regular applicants. A regular student almost has to be in the top 10% of their class to get in (a bogus rule...but thats a different topic for another day). Otherwise, you'd better have close to a 4.0 and a 1300 SAT to have a shot.
I think football players have to get an 800+ on the SAT and carry a 2.0 GPA. What's different about UT is that the class requirements once you get there are pretty rigid. Players know that when they commit. Sure, they get alot of help, but they still have to do the work and keep up...in the past few years several high profile recruits couldn't make it once they got to UT.
SV05champs
08-02-2005, 08:59 PM
Either way, like you said, they still have to get the work done. Even a 800 on the SAT is better than some of my classmates (that could talk fine) made on that test. A couple of them are VERY successful people today. Like you said, even with the help they still have to put effort into it. I have a feeling he will do fine in the classroom, and I know he will do fine on the field..

If you are a Longhorn and hear someone use the term TU, wouldn't you say that *MOST LIKELY* it is a fan of M&A?
TU is the term used by everyone else, now if i wrote as t.u then that would have aggy all over it. School all over this state and outside of Texas use that TU refrence, and the reaction it gets is funny/.

Man y'll stop harping on the dude because of how he talks. Thats pretty low for The ticket to go and make fun of him like that. I mean making fun of the speach was one thing but then going on and questioning his high school education was just a low blow period. I went to school with a couple of people that spoke similar and worser then him and made better grades then me. He may of just been excited @ the time he was in the middle of a game. I don't have to hope he get some help because going to UT he'll probably learn how to speak eventually. British people can't speak perfect english.....oh well

2nd- he deserved it, I dont care how old he is, if you would have heard the interview, you would understand why they are doing what they are. He did not make himself or tu look very good.
All sports is dull and that's coming from someone who has a couple of sports mag subscriptions, the NFL Sunday ticket (sing it like Jeff Garlin)...the Ticket has their little niche. And that niche is blasting ESPN spare radio. Dude, they (Ticket) pick on everyone, so this doesn't come as a surprise.

But in reality, it does not take a genius to figure out that 17 and 18 year old athletes are getting into colleges all of the time that have no business there. I agree with Farmer. More and more people are saying it because of the Teasippers reaction to it. Either way, J.Charles would have been better off saying that than what he finally came up wih in the interview.

After reading this post, I would like to offer this. J Charles was the biggest football player at this school and in the state for that matter. He was a nationally recognized hurdler. I can guarantee you he has had a camera and/or mike in his face most of high school career just judging by what we've seen in this area with SLC players. There wasn't two days would go by without a Daniel or Luna quote in the paper or on TV. High profile athletes have and always will be interviewed first. Spare me the rational that he had just come off the field business. Athletes of his stature know when the camera/mike is on. His interview was pathetic. If this is typicall for him. Somebody should have clued him in that he was bad. If it's not, thank goodness because if he is going to represent UT and be the runner everyone thinks he'll be, he is going to be interviewed, a bunch.

(I found this thread while searching for the sound clip of Charles' interview)
I had forgotten about this until they replayed it yesterday on The Ticket...I didn't realize it was Jamaal Charles!! :D They must've played it a dozen times back in Aug...tried to break it down and figure out what he was saying...etc etc. I'm sorry, but it was FUNNY. Lighten up people. The Ticket will make fun of just about anything, INCLUDING themselves. They LOVE wheels-off moments like that. It's their bit! Like the Ball State sports guy earlier this year...was that not funny either??!! :D They dedicate segments to bustin' each other's balls for mis-speaking, getting tongue tied, burping on the air, etc. ESPN radio is too serious.
The Ticket >>>>>>>>>>>>>>> ESPN Radio
and the ratings back that up... ;)
ESPN Radio is great if you want nothing but sports. I used to listen to it, but got hooked on The Ticket and now listen from 7 am to 6:30 pm every day. ESPN Radio is good if you want to take a nap I suppose. I still jump to ESPN on a commercial every now and then and usually get a good laugh when I hear them play a "drop" like The Ticket does...lame!!
They still talk sports on The Ticket, but it's only about 1/2-2/3 of what they do. The rest is usually funny as hell, or just "guy stuff". There's a reason why there are manyof knock-off "The Ticket" sports talk radio stations all over the country...
For those not in DFW (or an area that picks it up well), you can listen online...
http://theticket.com/listen.htm
Gordo is the funniest IMO (non-sports guy on the 6-10 am show). He has segments at 6:15, 7:15, and 9:15. Here's his website (more funny stuff).

and Corby from 3-7 pm (he knows sports, but does their wacky bits).

If they goof on themselves or other adults, that's fine. Messing with a new graduate from high school who gave and interview during a high school All-Star game is just plain tacky, uncalled for, and wrong. It shows a lack of class. I guess if they played a tape of a Downs-Syndrome kid and made fun of it, that would be just okie-dokie too, huh? Jamal has a speach problem and making fun of it is totally classless.
I'm a fan of The Ticket too, a card carrying P-1, and I listen from about 10AM to 5PM each week day and the same times on Saturday. However, there are lines that should not be crossed, and making fun of a kids' handicap is wrong. :(

Well I think you are making excuses for another dumb athlete. He is 18 he is an Adult. It should be his responsibility to get the proper education that would allow him to at least carry on an intelligent conversation instead he sounds like an ignorant bafoon. The only reason he and his kind are even allowed to go to UT is because they can play sports. He could at least try to SOUND like he belongs in college. This is not the first instance of an athlete who sounds totally ignorant giving an interview. Just watch on Sunday and these guys have supposedly graduated from college. We know why they were their and education is not the reason. Light should be made of these instances so hopefully it can be corrected. This is a state institution and funds could be better spent on a student that actually is their to learn and has the ability to learn as opposed to being wasted on someone like this who probably won't stay to finish or does not have the capacity to attain a degree.

Lets not forget that its a considerable amount of those "funds" that is brought in by these football programs, both directly and indirectly. Its no secret that thier are lot of athletes in D1 sports that likely did not have the smarts to get in (I don't know anything about JC's qualifications in the classroom) The money he will help bring in to the program will more than offset anything that might have been "wasted" on him. Right or wrong, thats just the way it is.
And when its all said and done, JC may or may not still studder and struggle to sound literate in front of a camera, but he will likely be wealthy enough that he won't lose much sleep over it.(barring injury)
I know that NO ONE expected Charles to come in and do what's he's doing. He re-injured his ankle in practice wednesday and is listed as "Questionable". Will the Horns miss him? Selvin Young has trouble hanging on to the ball. Will Taylor get reps at RB?
Everyone was making fun of this guy....but i think this guy is special....I expect GREAT things from him in the Future....Vince was Superman....Jamal needs a nickname.....he's a member of the "Super Friends" too. The "FLASH" maybe?

Here was another great football player from the state of Texas, that HAD a speech problem, until the doctors helped him.
Lester Hayes
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
Lester Hayes was a professional American football player for the National Football League Oakland/LA Raiders. He was commonly referred to as "the Molester" and "the Judge." He was known for his "bump and run" coverage style, and for using Stickum™ before it was banned in a rule bearing his name. In college, he became an All-American safety at Texas A&M. Hayes was converted to cornerback after being drafted by the Raiders in 1977. Hayes was a member of two Raiders championship teams (1980, 1983), and was a five time Pro Bowler (1980-1984). He is eligible for enshrinement in the Professional Football Hall of Fame, but as yet has not been selected.
Hayes was a lifelong stutterer until well into his professional career. He tended to stay quiet, rather than draw attention to his condition. For this reason, he was often looked upon as not very smart, but after successful treatment, people "couldn't shut him up," according to Raiders coach John Madden, and it was revealed that Hayes was an articulate, intelligent man. At autograph signings, he would maintain a constant flow of chatter, entertaining his fans with his wit and style.
Lester Hayes currently lives with his wife in Modesto, California.
This condition was caused because he had an allergic reaction to cats, which they had many of,when he was growing up.So Lester would take all kinds of allergy meds,to try to talk better. Please leave Jamaal alone,he will get over this problem, maybe even before he becomes a man!Age really does`nt show a real man, look at Wide,he`s still searching:D lol
