The University of Texas

Because it is the flagship University for the greatest state in the nation. Because it is an institution that is among the nation's elite in academics as well as athletics. Last, but certainly not least, The University of Texas sits at the heart of the most exciting city which sits at the heart of the greatest state in the nation.

I'm agreeing with him. Texas University represents what Texas is all about. The ahtletic program and team spirit is phenominal, and in academics it ranks as the 15th best university in the world. The town is great too, live music capital of the world, so fun is going on all the time!

I dont recall anybody saying Austin represents Texas. Fact is, Austin is too unique to represent anything other than Austin. The University of Texas does represent this state though. It is massive, diverse, constantly growing and improving while maintaining a solid vision of where it came from. It draws in countless people from all over the nation and world who are looking for something bigger and better... just like Texas.

B/CS does NOT in any way represent the state of Texas. The day that happens is the day Arkansas starts looking like a desirable place to live.

Maybe I shouldn't ask the question, since you probably graduated from UT, but I will.

Don't you think the ideology in Austin and at UT is far different from other places in Texas? Doesn't Austin seem to be a lot different than Abilene? Are you happy with that? My answers are yes, yes, and no.

Austin is very different from Abilene... in fact, the two cities may be polar opposites. However, I have had the good fortune to travel all over this state. One thing I have noticed is that Texas is like several small countries rolled into one state. West Texas is very different from East Texas. The Panhandle is very different from South Texas. Central Texas, North Texas, Southeast Texas... they are all so different. The University of Texas is where you can see all those different people from all those different areas and backgrounds living and learning side by side. Texas is a melting pot in the truest since of the cliche and no University in Texas is a bigger melting pot than The University of Texas. You may not like some of the people you see on campus, but those people dont just reside in Austin. You find people like that all over this state. Like or not, not everybody in this state is a bible thumping conservative that enjoys football and hunting. You'll see a lot of Birkenstock wearing, tree hugging vegetarians taking classes with big ole rednecks dreaming about a steaks and beer. It's that diversity that allows The University of Texas to represent this diverse state so well.

Ok, I'm not gonna get into bashing Texas, so I'm just going to give my answer to the origional question.

I choose Texas A&M University

Texas A&M represents everything I love. Among A&M's many great characteristices, it has the greatest stadium in the world and the nicest people in the nation. There are all kinds of people form all different backgrounds, and those who say A&M isn't diverse are dead wrong. I recently went to the Texas A&M Fightin' Texas Aggie Class of 2005 Spring Graduation, and there were many exotic names of people from exotic places. The Satdium is consistently rated as one of the hardest places to play, and the people really are renound for being friendly. To me, however, the best thing about A&M is the tradition. Mabye the critics of the Aggies are just forward thinkers who believe traditions weigh you down, but I am not one of them. The many traditions make the brotherhood that much stronger and keep the town so much nicer. I mean, who else can say they make their stadium move while doing their War Hymn? (Yes, during the "Saw varsity's horns off" part, Kyle field does sway and the sway can be easily felt in the pressbox). I'm only 15, but every time i arrive off of highway 6 in Bryan/College Station, I can't help but smile. I guess it's just been instilled in me my whole life...who knows

Ya' know some people would consider that child abuse.

And P.S. It's an optical illusion...the stadium isn't actually swaying.

I would 100% agree that people at M&A are indeed very friendly and nice. I was very suprised how friendly they were to me, even while knowing that I am a Longhorn.

As far as being diverse, I'm sure diversity exists, but IN RELATION to Texas it is small.

Oh yeah the stadium is nice too!

As a supporter of neither team, I do like A&M's setup better. They are more spread out and have more room to grow. I really like the A&M campus, and they have Mt. Aggie, their own ski slope. I never have been a fan of UT being so cramped for space in downtown Austin. Austin wins hands down in the things to do category.

For the most part, I like the Aggie traditions and I thought the bonfire memorial was pretty cool, too.

There are shuttles running to areas of high student population: West Campus, Cameron Road, Riverside, Far West, etc etc, however I don't think they run special for football games. They do run 7 days a week to and from campus until nearly 11 at night.

If that's all you got, consider yourself lucky. A few taunts and chants are nothing. What I don't like is the violence and thrown beer, etc. seen in places like Philly, even for Pittsburgh people.

Well, I got my degree at TEXAS, so I'm a little partial.

I'll be the first to tell you that the place certainly is weird...ya know the "Keep Austin weird" stuff...yeah, mission accomplished. However, I really liked it there. I got to know so many differrent types of people, the campus and the city are beautiful, the football games were great, I got a good education, and my goodness, the scenery ;) ...it's not San Marcos, but dang.

I was one of only 7 from my graduating class to go to UT. A ton of people went to A&M. A&M would have been just as good, academically, but I never really jived with all the Aggie traditions and all that. It wasn't for me. Really, it comes down to what type of atmosphere you're more comfortable in. I always loved the UT campus and I really liked the diversity UT offered even though Austin and UT are quite a bit more liberally slanted than I am. It was a great experience and I wouldn't trade it for anything. I'm proud to have graduated from Texas, but I'm not of the opinion that it's better than everywhere else.

I agree completely on the scenery. However, UT has just been ranked by Playboy as the University with the hottest ladies. I know we have our fair share, but I wonder where they all are when I'm on campus? I openly admit everytime I visit M&A I am very much impressed with the women out there.

Before coming to school at UT, I hadn't ever visited M&A, and I have to say it wouldn't have been to bad out there for me except that it's a lot more conservative than I'd like. That, and I have a certain pride in knowing my degree will be from the #2 public university in the world. (London Times article if anyone wonders where I got that figure)

I'm a native Iowan who teaches in Southlake Carroll, and am first and foremost an Iowa Hawkeye fan. I love the Dragons and am green and white thru and thru on Friday Nights, but on Saturdays for the past 25 + years I bleed Old Gold and Black. The state of Iowa is mostly a Hawkeye state, and there is such a small population base in the state(less than the Dallas-Ft. Worth mextroplex) that the fans there are really passionate about all the universities/colleges athletic teams. The Hawks are just on the top rung. When you factor in they are playing in one of the premier conferences(Big 10), the fans really get pumped. Iowa is the smallest college(minus Northwestern) in the conference, and when the Hawks take down the Michigans, Ohio States, and Penn States of the world, its an awesome awesome feeling. We've had our ups and downs in hoops ( 1 final four team in my life:1980), wrestling we were superior to the world (take out the Soviets) under the legend Dan Gable, and Iowa City is just flat out a great college town. Nothing beats going to a game at Kinnick in November when there's Big Ten Title implications :)

My favorite college football stadium is "The Swamp." Just about any SEC stadium is awesome, really. I would love to see a game there. I would also love to see a game in Baton Rouge.

I love going to UT games and all, but the crowd frustrates me. 1/4 or more of the "fans" show up halfway through the first quarter and leave halfway into the fourth.

I have yet to visit a Big XII stadium that has anything on the SEC. They do college football the way it was meant to be done. I've been to the Swamp, Alabama's Bryant Denny Stadium and Sanford Stadium in Georgia. There's just nothing like it. Most experts say Tennesee's Neyland Stadium is the best in the country. LMAO...haha...
When I was stationed in Norfolk,Va.
Me and a buddy from Tulsa went to the
Redskins bar with Michael Irvin and Darren Woodson jerseys on...
Man you could have heard a pin drop.
And what made it worse.....The Cowboys beat the brakes off of the 'Skins.
By the end of the game, we were all so drunk I had them singin' to
Garth Brooks on the jukebox...it was an experience to say the least.
haha sounds like something youd see in a movie or the new MLB commercial with the MLB radio thing

I have two bi-racial kids...
let's just say all the Natty Lights and Confederate flags
makes me a bit nervous.
I'm sure it's a blast...some of the element that frequent such
events bothers me.
I'd rather go see some drag-racing myself.

I'm a student at UT and I love it here. The campus is small and although it is somewhat crowded it really gives you sense of community. Austin is a great city and the people here are really cool. I got accepted into A&M but felt like UT was a better fit for me. A&M's campus is way to spread out and getting to classes would have been tough. Both schools are great academic institutions and both are ranked #15 among universities in the nation, people in Texas should be very proud to have 2 great universities. Both are great football schools with loyal and large fan bases. I went to Kyle Field for one game about 2 years ago and it was one of the coolest game day atmospheres, definitely up there with the Swamp and Death Valley. I, unlike t-shirt fans of UT, have respect for A&M, as students we know its tough to graduate from either school. Most of the people who make comments about A&M or UT never or could never get into either school. As far as students and alumni of each school really respect each other, although when it comes to the playing field all the respect goes out the window and we want to beat A&M like a rented mule, I'm sure it's the same way with them as well.

you are dead right about the getting in part. the top 10% rule has decimated the 2 big uni's quality of students. it has made the job of admissions much easier however. now, all the admissions board has to do to know who will be in the freshman class is print off the top 10 percent from each high school. the admissions people at schools across the state are otherwise ecstatic about the top 10 rule. they are now having access to much higher quality students who used to go to tu or tamu, and now can't gain acceptance.

I consider myself very lucky to have gotten in to UT because I was not in the top 10% of my class. I finished HS with a 4.08 or something like that, yet I was 73rd out of 550+ in my graduating class. I was accepted to Georgia Tech in my preferred major (at the time) in November, but I had to wait until March to get into an "undeclared" spot at UT. GT would have been awesome, but I wouldn't have been able to afford it...and I must admit, I really wanted to stay in Texas.

I was lucky enough to get in, but I firmly believe that the top 10% thing is a crock. I knew many people who were top 10% in HS that couldn't cut it at UT and I know several non top 10%'ers who were denied admission and excelled at other state colleges...those people ended up better off in the long run, because they were better students to begin with.

I'm a Red Raider through and through!!!!

I love the architecture and I'm a third gen Raider. Tech has one of the best undegrad biology programs around.

I just couldn't turn my back on the scarlet and the black.

The way i see it drunk people are what make sporting events great...i went to the all star game in houston last year and by the fifth inning some drunk yankee fan was about to fight a drunk red sox fan in front of me and i thought it was funny cuz they both swung and missed and hit ther beer which ticked em off...they were at it again in the street after the game...so drunk people are what make sporting events great

The place where the top 10% rule is killing the universities in my opinion are in the programs where academic performance is not that important like art or music. There are a lot of great actors, painters and musicians that have great skills just not the academic performance which is not what they would be going to school for in the first place.
