I need some info here. My Dad who is at least 75 has some business in NYC. He is the cheapest person I know so he is thinking of catching the rail to get to his Manhattan hotel. Not sure what time his flight gets to JFK, but does anybody know if it is safe for him to do this, particularly if his flight gets in after dark?

I've been to La Guardia but not JFK.

Having been to NYC many many times, I personally would not take the train in, especially after dark. I have only gone in to JFK 4 times though so maybe it's okay. I have actually only gone into NYC straight from the airport 3 times and I have taken a taxi or Limo...I'm usually going out on the Island...Port Jefferson - and family picks us up or we rent. I do take the train in from Long Island but that's a little different on the LIRR. If he knows the city well, then it's not so bad - if he doesn't, a Taxi (about $30-40 plus Midtown Tunnel or bridge tolls depending on which direction he is going) is the way to go, cheap or not. Better safe than sorry.

Personally I would get in a cab at JFK and tell the driver "uptown"...and pay the cost later.

Take a taxi in from JFK. If he wants to save some money, there is dedicated bus service from the NY airports to select Manhattan hotels. You might want to check with one of them.
