View Full Version : Texas Rangers Baseball Talk 2007

I thought I would start a thread we could go to for Ranger talk this season.
Ron Washington made a great move last night walking Jim Thome to load the bases and pitching to Paul Konerko Scott Feldman was great in the bottom of the 7th. But when Scott Feldman came back in the 8th inning... Right away it seemed to me like he did not have good stuff and was very hittable. Washington wanted to push him like he does his starters and it did not work. I put this loss on Ron Washington. He had many arms left in the bullpen and just because it was tied he left Feldman in the game.
Now I read the Washington has taken the blame for this loss.

Excerpt from game recap:
...Feldman then kept it that way in the bottom of the seventh when he came in and struck out Konerko with the bases loaded for the third out.
Washington liked what he saw with Feldman and left him in there in the eighth with Jermaine Dye (right-handed hitter), Pierzynski (left) and Joe Crede (right) coming up for the White Sox.
If the Rangers lead in the late innings, Washington goes with a parade of Joaquin Benoit, Akinori Otsuka and Eric Gagne. But the game was tied, and Washington stayed with Feldman.
"I thought he was throwing a pretty good sinker and could get us through it," Washington said.
Instead, Feldman fell behind with two quick balls to Dye. Then he came in with a fastball, and Dye lined it into the right-center-field gap for a leadoff double. Pierzynski lined out to center, but Crede smacked a 1-2 pitch up the middle for a hit that scored Dye with the go-ahead run.
"I had a good at-bat with Konerko, then went out there and fell behind on Dye," Feldman said. "Looking back on the outing, not putting Crede away in that situation hurt. I need to do a better job of getting him out."
That brought up Rob Mackowiak, a left-handed hitter, and Washington had left-handed reliever C.J. Wilson ready in the bullpen. But he stayed with Feldman, and Mackowiak hit a 1-2 pitch into the seats in right to break the game open.
Leaving Feldman in to face Mackowiak was what bothered Washington the most when it was all over.
"A bad decision," Washington said.
The Rangers only made him feel worse when they scratched out a run against White Sox closer Bobby Jenks in the ninth.

You know, I always thought we should have kept Adrian Gonzalez and traded Tex for pitching. We are not going to be able to keep Tex anyway. SD just signed Gonzalez to a 4 year $9.5 million deal. Sweet.
Gonzalez AVG .305 | HR 5 | RBI 17 | OBP .356 | SLG .537
TEX AVG .224 | HR 0 | RBI 3 | OBP .350 | SLG .254

Well I completely missed the Ranger game last night. Played golf yesterday afternoon and then had dinner. Did not get home until about 7:30 and started watching the Spurs Game (off the DVR). The other tuner was busy recording another program for my wife (Idol I think) so I could not record both the Spurs and the Rangers.
Kinsler had a critical error that allowed a big inning. But then he hit a 3 run Jack. tough extra inning loss.

Sammy hit 2 homers... Kinsler got a hit... but thats about it. K. Loe did not bode well to keep a spot in the rotation. But on the upside, The Rangers are doing as well as the Yankees!:p
I am in for more punishment... series with Toronto starts tonight at 6:00 PM.

Sammy hits another homer, Tex got his first dinger of the year, Wilkerson hits a homer. All of this in the 3rd inning. Tejeda pitches well for a 5-3 win over the Jays who just blanked the Yankees 6-0. Tejeda only threw 2 bad pitches but they both were off-speed and both went yard. Kinsler keeps putting the wood on the ball though they were not all hits. Francisco looked great out of the bullpen. Benoit was good. Otsuka comes in and closes the door. Good win for the Rangers.

Rangers win in 10 innings in Toronto. I just now finished watching the game and it was a slugfest. TEX looks like he is out of his slump. Gerald Laird got his bat going and had a huge night including his first homer. Of course the pitching was very shaky. Wilkerson has a huge hit in the top of the ninth to tie it up. Cat also took one for the team just before Wilkerson’s hit, which forced in a run.
Geddy Lee of Rush was at the game and caught on camera by KDFI. Geddy is a huge baseball fan and lives in Toronto

Rnager pitching again the problem. McCarthy is looking terrible. Washinton says they will wait for him to come around. He looked good at times, getting out of a big jam in the 1st with only 1 run scored.
Maybe the Rangers can take 3 of 4 after today.

What happened
Alex Rodriguez got beat by Gerald Laird in a run down to home...
Teixeira had four hits, including three doubles, and three RBIs.
Victor Diaz hit his first career grand slam and did it as a Pinch-hitter.
Texas scored 10 runs in the seventh and eighth innings against Chien-Ming Wang (1-3), Luis Vizcaino and Sean Henn.
Brandon McCarthy limited New York to one run in 5 1-3 innings.
Rangers went on to rout the Yankees 14-2 yesterday.
And of course, I did not set the DVR!

The Rangers appear to be going south this year. Oh how I wish we still had Adrian Gonzalez so we could let Tex go for some pitching. We are going to have to tear this thing down again. Should have traded Blalock last year when he had more value. Kept Soriano. Should have signed Gary Matthews. Kept Chris Young. My Hindsight is 20/20.

If you think the number of Rangers recruits who got away is bad now.....you should have been around in the mid-late 70's when Brad Corbett was the owner. He would trade top prospect on a whim to get a used up veteran who never amounted to anything, and the kids went elsewhere and became stars.

I totally agree with that post. Pitching has been a HUGE problem for Texas for years and it seems the ownership doesn't ever go out and try to do anything about it. I was a little surprised by the hiring of Ron Washington and if the Rangers don't make a serious turn-around soon I think he will be gone.

The one constant through all the years, has been baseball. America has rolled by like an army of steamrollers. It's been erased like a blackboard, rebuilt, and erased again. Rangers had a good series against the Brew Crew winning 2 of 3, including Saturday night's comeback. They scored 4 runs against the Brewers in the bottom of the 9th with 2 outs and nobody on. In the loss last night, they hung in the game but lost in the 12th inning.
I remember a huge comback against the Yankees in the late eighties when "Inky" was playing left field. Rangers score 3 or 4 in the bottom of the 9th to tie it up and then won it in the bottom of the 10th. they also started that ralley with 2 outs if I remember correctly.

My daddy said something about the Rangers the other day that maybe true. He thinks the Rangers slacked off alot during spring training, which is one of the good reasons why they started so slow. The pitching has gotten alot better than it was, and the lineup is also heating up.

I really don't want to give up on this guy. They need to keep throwing him out there and let him understand that he does not need to worry about getting hit. It is all between the ears right now. He had 5 good innings last night, but then left the game when he could not throw a strike in the 6th. I don't disagree with Washington sending out in the 6th, but in retrospect, especially with his limited success... he should have let him leave the game with those 5 innngs of solid pitching.
Oh well... Angels are the best offensive team in the majors and we still took 2 of 3! :)

Rangers win in the tenth on a Michael Young hit.
Loe man allows no runs, bull pen struggles a little including Gagne... but Benoit shuts it down in the 10th.
Travis Metcalf gets a key single to start the bottom of the 10th.
Hairston bunts and and move Metcalf over to second (Hairston almost beat out the throw), VazQuez gets a walk and then Young hits the first pitch he sees to left field (grounder between 3rd and short)!
Rangers did get a break in the top of the 7th on a bad call at home plate. Win some lose some.
Rangers win 4-3!

I went to the game today and im impressed with how well Kenny Lofton is playing. Even with his age he still has speed and has been hitting the ball very well lately, with a single,HR, and 2 walks today. Not too bad for a lead off hitter. Millwood had another good start going 5 innings, just that his pitch count got a little high after getting into a big jam in the 5th.
The rest of the Rangers season will be decided in their series with the Angels and A's after the All-Star break. Those 2 series will decide how many trades Daniels will want to make because if the Rangers make up 3 or 4 games in that span they would have a shot at coming back and would need to hang on to Gagne and Otskua because you need closers to make a run. But if they fall apart in that span they will probably trade 1 or both of them away.
Tex will be traded either way because theres no way the Rangers will be able to resign him so they need to get something for him while they can

I know the majority of thinking in baseball is that you get value for your players if you are not in the race. But the problem with the Rangers has always been pitching. So why not work out deals with Gagne and Otsuka. they are two of the best pitchers we have.
I am all for trading Tex, Lofton, Sosa, if they can get something for them. I don't think Blalock has any value right now... should have been traded last year.
I like Jon Daniels as a GM. He has been better than Hart. But I wish we could undo one trade. Trading Chris and Adrian Gonzalez and at this point netting Otsuka was a terrible trade. Think if we had Young and Gonzalez.
Young last year with the Padres 11-5 with 3.46 ERA 179.1 IP 69 BBs and 164 Ks!
This year he is even better... 8-3 with 2.00 ERA 103.2 IP 36 BBs and 99 Ks!!!
I would also rather pay Gonzalez to play first instead of TEX.

The Rangers are finally getting the message from Ron Washington. "Pitching and defense first, and the offense will come".
They may still have a long way to go, but the thing I like about this team is that they aren't giving up. They're continuing to play, and they have the second-best record since June behind the Cubs.
I'm not giving up at all! Do any of you remember the year the California Angels had a 16 game lead over the Mariners going into the last month and a half of the season? The Angels tanked that last month and a half, and the Mariners won the west. And, of course, we all know how the Astros like to do it. This season is far from over.

Exactly! Who knows? If the Red Sox can come back from 0-3 and defeat the Yankees, nothing is impossible. Not to mention, the Sox had to go on the road to New York and win games 5 and 7 to advance, and that's not easy, especially at Yankee Stadium.

I guarantee that Cuban has had someone look into the Rangers at some point. But Hicks is not going to sell. He has said so many times recently. He has no desire to sell. I wish he would though. At one time, I thought he was a good owner willing to spend what it takes. But now he seems like more of a bottom line guy. I think if the Rangers were in position to make the playoffs and needed role players to make a playoff run, he would spend the money to do it. But I don’t think he spends enough money on scouting to build a great farm system.
Plus… the Cubs are a marquee franchise kind of like the Cowboys. I would say the Cubs are only behind the Yankees, Red Sox in MLB. Some would say the Dodgers are above them as well. Cuban is looking at long term investment. Cubs are worth $592 million. Yankees are worth $1.2 billion. I think Cuban sees that growth and a good place to park his money.
Jerry Jones has seen his team’s value increase 840% since he bought them. That is over 17 years. Much better than just doubling your money every 7 years. He bought the Cowboys for $140 million. They are now worth $1.173 billion (Forbes).
Tom Hicks is doing the same thing. He is parking his money on franchises because the value goes up better than other investments. That is why he just bought a soccer team and still owns the Stars and Rangers.
You would have to overpay to break the franchises loose from people who just want to park their money.

I'm a Braves fan, thought I'd give you my personal thoughts on the trade.
Part of me is really upset we're losing Saltalamacchia, he was my favorite young player, the last young Braves prospect I felt this good about was Jermaine Dye and he's done alright for himself.
I understand the organization is trying to win now. Who knows how much longer Bobby and John will stick around. Andruw is probably gone after this year, at the very latest next year if he decides to sign a one year deal and put up better numbers since he's having a horrible year. Chipper and Smoltz won't be around much longer. So even though I think there's a good young nucleus forming with Francoeur, McCann and Kelly Johnson, I understand the window is closing and sometimes you have to let a good young player go to try to win now.

staggering stats:
Baltimore ace Erik Bedard has allowed only 31 runs in his last 17 starts dating back to May 25.
Texas scored more runs Wednesday than it had in its previous nine contests combined.
Baltimore set a new franchise record for margin of defeat by ending in a 27-run deficit. The previous mark was a 19-run defeat in 1996, also at the hands of the Rangers.
Even with a huge margin of victory, Wes Littleton earned his first save of the season by throwing three innings in relief.
Texas starter Kason Gabbard, who pitched his fifth game with the Rangers after being traded from Boston before the trade deadline, saw his run support jump from 3.66 to 7.85 with his new team.
The Rangers entered the game with the third-worst team batting average in the American League, but saw it jump five points to .258.
The NFL's Houston Texans have scored at least 30 points only three times in the team's five-year existence. And they won't score that against the Cowboys tomorrow!
Texas had 57 at-bats, tying the AL record for a nine-inning game set by Milwaukee in 1992.
The Rangers are the first team with four players (Metcalf, Byrd, Saltalamacchia and Vazquez) to register four RBIs since the Phillies in 1979.
This is the sixth time that a team has scored 9 or more runs in two different innings
Metcalf's four RBIs were more than he had in 35 games this season
Texas' 30 RBIs set the Major League record for a single game since 1920, when that statistic was first recorded.

What a fun game tonight.
The Rangers are down 3-0 in the bottom for the 5th. with 2 outs, Beltre makes a bad throw to first for an error which would have ended the game. Next at bat... Kinsler makes the Mariners pay for Beltre's error with a 3 run homer.
Jason Botts guns down Guillen at the plate in the top of the 7th to keep the score tied 3-3! Tom Grieve (Ranger color commentator) said it best... It's just like hitting a homer. But instead of scoring a run, you prevent one.
And the most exciting play of the game:eek: ... the suicide squeeze is on for the Rangers with Kinsler at 3rd and Laird at the plate. The pitch is thrown right a Laird's head... he somehow manages to keep his bat level and bunt the ball while falling down and throwing his head back:eek: ... Kinsler scores what turns out to be the winning run... an amazing play... look for it on Sportscenter.

Nelly Cruz at the plate with a man on second and first and 2 outs. He has a long at bat going and finally hits a pop fly to right field. Vladimir Guerrero parks underneath it and closes his glove before he has it and drops the popfly. Rangers score 2 unearned runs. He kind of misjudged it. It was a routine popfly and no wind.
