I think that is a bit rediculous, guys who make illegal hits or abuse other rules never get near 100K...what do you guys think?

Wearing a logo during the Super Bowl and surrounding events is worth a lot of money. I guess the league makes the amount of the fine that high to deter players from breaking the rule. If it was only a few grand, what the player made from the company would more than make it worth the fine.

It seems harsh but I can understand why. The NFL has a contract with Gatorade, and Urlacher was advertising for Vitamin Water. Lets not forget that the NFL is Urlacher's employer, and he was advertising for someone else. If the NFL has a contract with Gatorade, then that sort of makes Gatorade his co-employer as well. Would your company let you wear a hat of their rival business?

I understand it. Urlacher is able to play for the league because of the money that sponsors give the league. Ford wouldn't tolerate an employee wearing a "Chevy: Like a Rock" polo shirt at a press conference. The NFL has to uphold its end of the contract it signs with sponsors.

I understand the fine, but there's a double standard.

Jerry Jones and Cowgirls get to promote Dr. Pepper at their stadium, but the Official soft drink of the NFL is Pepsi...

Vitamin Water probably loves that he's been fined. Honestly, how many people noticed it during Super Bowl week? Not many if any. Now how many people are talking about the 'Vitamin Water' hat today? Everybody. They're getting more than $100,000 in 'free' advertising and exposure and should have no problem compensating Urlacher for the fine.

Urlacher was fined for drinking vitaminwater and wearing a vitaminwater hat during the media session in Miami leading to the title game.

"vitaminwater" is the name of the product. Sorry, I shouldn't have spaced it in my post. It's made by a company called Glaceau but the actual product is "vitaminwater".

So thats what a 100,000 dollar hat looks like! ;)

Why are we hearing about this now? Shouldn't the NFL have done something about this right after the Super bowl?

I've never been fond of the rule. The 100k-hit is a bit overboard.

Dr. Pepper is owned by Pepsi. Sometimes places will have Coke and Dr. Pepper from the fountain, but that is only if Coke and Pepsi have come to an agreement. Coke owns Mr. Pibb and Pepsi owns Dr. Pepper.

I thought Dr. Pepper was independently owned and operated.

Not exactly. Mr. Pibb is Coke's but Dr. Pepper isn't Pepsi's.

Domestically, Dr. Pepper used to be distributed by Coke, Pepsi and Independent Bottlers. Now though is it bottled by the Cadbury Schweppes Bottling Group which used to be known as the Dr Pepper/Seven Up Bottling Group.

Coke did try to buy Dr. Pepper back in the 1990's but it was blocked by the FTC. Internationally Dr. Pepper is distributed by Coke, Pepsi or Cadbury Schweppes depending on the country.

Dr Pepper is not owned by Pepsi.
It is part of Cadbury-Schweppes, but in the US, Dr Pepper will sell distribution rights to independent distributors such as ABTEX which serves a huge area throughout the Abilene region.

Dr Pepper is still distributed by Coke in other areas, such as Lubbock.

In the larger metro areas, there is enough critical mass(business) to support the cost of Dr Pepper doing its own distribution.

The four companies that form Pepsico are Pepsi, Frito Lay, Tropicana, and Quaker Oats(think Gatorade...)
