What are the benefits from having a sandpit to workout in?
Offseason only? Who has one now?

Why would a coach want his players running on a poor surface during the off-season. I think it would just cause more injury.

ROTFLMAO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!
sand pits are a beautifully degrading device through which you learn to despise each of your teammates that cannot march/ count/ stand at attention/ or remember their 10 General Orders...:p
memories...just like two-a-days for you non-jarheads. Something you're proud to have been through, but wouldn't volunteer to do again.
Here's to Ye Olde Sand Pit and Mountain Climbers-
those who know what I'm talking about will appreciate this part..."make it rain" :D :puke

The only time I worked out in a sand pit was on a golf course. I haven't played since.

In the military when I did some P.T. with Special Ops, we would run on the beach in the sand. It was to strenghten the ligaments, and tendons around the ankle area. After running up to ten miles like this in boots, the ankle area is pretty sore, and the calves burn. But, I have not gotten a twisted ankle (knock on wood) since. Twisted ankles are a common injury in Spec. ops. training.

It's said, that in 1965 Under 1st. year head coach Gene Mayfied the soon to be Permian state champs worked out in the Monahans Sand Hills. I had heard they were dumped in the middle of the sand hills and told to walk or run back to Odessa cross country. About 25 miles. Both CC teams have used them some lately but not enough that it shows.
I'm sure if you did that now a lot would quit.

all this army stuff aside. doing an actual work out in a sand pit is very benificial. every player hates the sand pits, they are hot, and sticky, and uncomfortable but if you can run in sand, if you can dive in sand, if you can shuffle in sand under the watch, then you can do it a hell of a lot faster than the next guy can when your both on the field. sandpits help you gain speed but they really improve agility. now if you dont agree with me fine but Coach Dodge thought it had some value.

Quite the opposite. Working out in the sand has been around for a long time, as our Military guys have pointed out. The benefits to a sandy enviroment are numerous but to keep it short think maximum resisitance with minimal impact. You get a great work out and your bones/joints don't take the abuse they do on just about any other surface.

I've worked out in the sand most of my life one way or another. There is no better workout for your legs. It's low impact but it will build you leg strength and cardio up faster than anything.
If there really can be an injury in the sand it would be making some of your tendons inflamed along the side of your legs because your always fighting to push off or stay up.

It does alot, but the one thing it does is strength the ankles. I dont know a player on the field that can be affective with weak ankles.

We have one at Cy-Fair. We have all kinds of different movements across it.
High Jump, Straight running, Karoke, etc.
there's one at Cy-Falls, its used to do a lot of plyometrics and such to work on esplosiveness

Yea, it an inexpensive way of developing and building up strength in the ankles, lower legs, etc. It can also improve quickness. Work out in the pits and then run on a regular surface and you can feel how light your feet feel, etc. Similair to walking around in ankle weights and then taking them off and running.

I have seen the pits at falls and fair and I see them used for holding H2O.
