View Full Version : Carr is a Panther

The Carolina Panthers won the battle for free agent quarterback David Carr early Friday morning, reaching agreement in principle with the former Houston Texans star on a two-year contract, the financial details of which were not immediately available.
Carr was released by the Texans after Houston acquired Matt Schaub in a trade with Atlanta earlier this offseason. The first player selected overall in the 2002 draft, Carr will serve as the backup to Panthers starter Jake Delhomme, who is coming off an uneven 2006 season.
"It's a case where we were obviously looking for someone to come in [and] back up Jake and the opportunity to get a quarterback the caliber of David in free agency is unique," Panthers general manager Marty Hurney told The Associated Press. "We thought it was a good situation and a good opportunity for us."
Carolina coach John Fox reiterated during the Panthers' courtship of Carr that Delhomme is the unchallenged starter, but the addition of Carr certainly provides an interesting alternative if the incumbent struggles as he did a year ago.
Carr, 27, chose the opportunity with the Panthers over one in Seattle. He visited with Carolina coaches and team officials on Monday and Tuesday, then made a two-day trip to meet with the Seahawks, where he would have also been a backup. After returning from the Seattle visit, Carr counseled with his wife and opted for the deal with Carolina.
The Cleveland Browns also indicated interest in Carr in recent days and the Miami Dolphins considered him as well. The only visits he made, however, were to Carolina and Seattle.
Obviously, the deal with Carolina represents a step back for Carr in his career, but most NFL experts believe the former Fresno State star still possesses immense talent and sorely needed a change of scenery.
In five seasons with the Texans, he completed 1,243 of 2,070 passes for 13,391 yards, with 59 touchdown passes and 65 interceptions, and a passer rating of 75.3. But Carr was the most-sacked quarterback in the league during his tenure with the Texans. Playing behind one of the league's most porous offensive lines, he was sacked a remarkable 249 times.
Carr started 75 games but recorded just a 22-53 record. Between bonuses and base salaries, the Texans paid Carr more than $35 million in five seasons. When they acquired Schaub, whom they immediately named the starter, they initially hoped to be able to trade Carr, but instead released him rather than prolong his time with the franchise.

Expensive back-up, but makes sense. Put it another way, how could he be any worse than he was in Houston?

I think David Carr's career is over. 2 more years and the guy is going to disappear...and im willing to bet that he doesn't give a damn. 50+ million in the bank...
Carr will become the most overpaid Bust the NFL has ever seen.

He will be the starter in Carolina and will have a Pro Bowl type year. The Texans will go winless, then proceed to screw up the number one pick in the draft, yet again.

Wake up dude... Carr= Failure.
He may have Talent (and i say this with complete and utter Exaggeration) ..But leadership is a area he will NEVER succeed at... because he doesnt care.
a 27 year old man spend more time with his nosey, Brownie point seeking father then he does with his WR. He is the last one at practice...and the first one to leave.
David Carr= BUST

Well Jake Delhomme won't have to worry about losing the starting job anytime soon. :D Carr will be riding the pine for awhile.

Mark it down. Delhomme will be benched for Carr some next season. Jake had trouble staying healthy and wasn't very good when he was out there. Carolina has a decent team... far better than anything the Texans have. Before all is said and done, people are going to see that Houston's problems had far less to do with Carr than they thought. That's just an atrocious organization from top to bottom.

Good for Carr. I'm in the minority but I believe he should have had another year here. The Texans tripled their wins from last year using a new system with a new coach and, did not have a running back to speak of. They also beat the Colts for the first time. Andre Johnson does not make the pro bowl on his own. I hope Carr does well.

I don't think Carr is as bad as people think and will do much better with a good club and a good O-line.
I also don't see him being an elite QB in the Pros, but I think he'll stay around for many years.

Yeah, but things like that always seem to happen to Houston based NFL teams. He will find a burst of energy somewhere in Carolina just to p.$$ the Texans fans off.

people seem to forget that the Texans had NO O-LINE while David Carr was their QB. It is difficult for any QB to have success when they are being sacked 50+ times in 16 games. Carolina has a much better o-line, and Jake struggled last year even when he was healthy. This being said, Jake will be benched at some point next season with Carr taking over the reigns. I don't think he will be a pro-bowl type qb either, but I do think he will be productive. I would have gladly had Carr here in Dallas instead of Quincy Carter, Chad Hutchinson, Drew Henson, Vinny Interceptaverdi, and the immobile Drew Bledsoe. However, I'm now happy we have Tony Romo.

He had no o-line and no running backs that were even above the status of decent! No way you can put it all on him. Yes 2 tds in 9 games is absolutely horrible, but the o-line and dropped balls had a lot to do with it. When you have no running game or o-line, the defense can focus solely on the only 2 good WRs the Texans have; Johnson and Molds. The opposing defenses only had to bring their front four every game and still had 6 sacks a game. Now tell me that is all Carr's fault.

All anyone had to do was watch a game and see Carr dropped by a defensive lineman in under 2 seconds and you know the problem.
To support your other points, the Texans thought so little of Moulds that they released him.

He'll be better in Carolina because while on the bench he can't lose games.
