This was my response to an email my boss in Wichita Falls sent me about Coach Robinson:

He was one of the best ever. He sent 200 players to the NFL with some of
them being Hall of Famers, but beyond the wins was the fact that he was a
great example to all those men for 57 years of coaching and the 10 years
since he retired. It still kills me every time I visit my relatives in West
Monroe that I have to see Grambling out in the country and Louisiana Tech 5
miles up the road in Ruston and Ruston pretty much acts like they only have
1 college. It's a shame we had a time in our country where segregation
dictated separate universities. It's really no different than Florida A&M
in Tallahassee and Prairie View right outside of Houston. What I appreciate
most about Coach Robinson is that he didn't let injustices get in the way of
him being a humble, loving man.

Notwithstanding all the obstacles he faced, all the prejudice and patronizing from the "big time" college football establishment, Coach Robinson was never negative, never bitter. The sports establishment may not have fully appreciated him, but his peers in the coaching business absolutely revered this man.

He taught his kids that despite all its flaws, America is a great country and above all he wanted his players to appreciate the opportunities they had by being Americans. Much like you read about Bob Knight, Coach Robinson was proud of his wins but much more proud of how his boys became good and decent men. If you listen to Doug Williams talk about Coach Robinson, you hear a person who has clearly absorbed the lessons.

An incredibly great man of great humility.

It reminds us of what an awesome opportunity (and amazing responsibility) that we give to our high school football coaches. They are often the only adult that kids listen long after they've tuned out Mom and Dad. The coach can use that platform to teach a lot of life lessons to the kids, and those who choose to do so are tremendously influential people. Those who choose to just teach football to 15-18 year olds are missing out.

When he began his career, Robinson had no paid assistants, no groundskeepers, no trainers and little in the way of equipment. He had to line the field himself and fix lunchmeat sandwiches for road trips because the players could not eat in the "white only" restaurants of the South.

He was not bitter, however. "The best way to enjoy life in America is to first be an American, and I don't think you have to be white to do so," Robinson said. "Blacks have had a hard time, but not many Americans haven't."

A life well invested for the benefit of others. Right now in heaven there is a tremendous welcoming reception going on for him.
