Terry Bowden article on his thoughts about an eventual playoff format

I guaran-dadgum-tee you that a seeded four-team playoff, at the very least, will be discussed. (http://sports.yahoo.com/ncaaf/news?slug=tb-playoffs033007&prov=yhoo&type=lgns)

Sounds promising.

We can only hope so.

I know I am being greedy, but it needs to be a 16 team tourney, so there is less chance of the media deciding who is fit to play-(USC and OSU couldn't lose in the last 2 years, but alas, the media was WRONG!)

I agree. 16 teams will definitely widen the field enough so there would be less chance of a deserving team being left out. The 4 team system will still cause an uproar. The BSC television contract runs out in 2009. It cant get here fast enough.

Why not take the media completely out and make it a tournament of Div1A conference champs only. That would be 11 teams and the only human intervention would be a committee to seed the teams, determining who gets first round byes. An added benefit is that nonconference games would have no effect on a team's chances to win a national championship, so maybe we'd get more UT v. Ohio State and less UT v. Sam Houston. Independents (Notre Dame and others) would need to join a conference to participate in the championship tournament. That's how I'd do it if I was in charge. :)

The problem with that is the difference in how conferences decide their champions. This is all hypothetical, but what if UT has a dominating season (say 8-0 in conference) and goes up against a decent Nebraska (maybe 5-3) in the Big XII championship, and they have a bad game and lose. Now you have 5-3 Nebraska representing the Big XII, while they may not be the most deserving team. You could do maybe a 16-team playoff with all the champions and 5 other deserving teams. Same idea as basketball, just harder to get in.

Each conference would have to determine how they choose their champion--i.e., with (Big 12, ...) or without (Big 10, ...) a championship game. If you can't win your conference championship, you shouldn't be taking up a slot in a necessarily small field vying for the national championship, IMO.

Four teams is better than nothin' I suppose...

Its a step in the right direction, though. Personally, I would like a 12-team playoff.

:D

I was hoping with Boise State's win over OU,that would hopefully increase the chances for a playoff brackett...
