Earl the pearl had tree trunks for legs and used those massive extremities to dominate thusly, the best to come out of texas IMO.

I remember watching that game on tv (Oilers vs Rams) and seeing Earl run over the Ram defender. Maybe the best "hit" I've ever seen in football by a RB. Earl just destroys and blowup that dude.

I think that Ram "LB" walked to the sideline after that hit and pulled of his shoulder pads and said, "I'm done with football.":)

Most powerful and dominating back ever IMO. Man did he deal out the punishment. No fancy cutbacks for him.

How would like to have been a DB seeing him come at you? I believe I would just let him score and save my body.;)

Don't forget about the EC and Jack Tatum collision at the endzone. That collision was so hard it spun Earl around. That was one hell of hit, and they both felt it afterwards.

The man could cut back. I saw him reverse field for a huge gain. He had a rare combonation of size, speed, power, and elusiveness. He could run past you around you or over you. Had he not been expected to carry the ball 40 times a game he would have had a much longer career. IMO the best back to ever play the game.

I watched all those games as a kid. Running over Isaiah Roberson, All-Pro LB from the Rams and Jack Tatum.

I heard the following story from Bum Phillips himself.

When Earl reported to his first Oilers training camp in San Angelo, he like all other players first had to complete a one mile run in the prescribed time for his position, which I believe was six and a half minutes for running backs.

Campbell painfully struggled through his mile run, looking exhausted and anything but athletic as he staggered across the finish line in just under ten minutes.

An assistant coach shook his head in disbelief. "Good Lord. This is the Heisman Trophy winner and the first pick in the draft. And he can hardly even run a mile."

Bum, who had seen Earl perform many times while at the University of Texas, was unpeturbed.

"Well," Bum said in perfect deadpan, "I guess if it's third and a mile, we just won't be giving him the ball."

The Oilers never asked Earl to re-run his mile.

That was All Pro linebacker Isaih Robertson..6'5" 265 lbs. He was indeed moved to second string after that game and credits Earl for ending his pro career. That coach didn't believe a 5'10" running back should be able to run through a linebacker of Robertson's size.
