I love hamburgers. From Mom's and Ray's Diner in Lufkin to Bubba Burgers at Feuglars outside Marshall. Prince's Hamburgers in Houston (voted best hamburger in Houston two years in a row) to Juicey's in Longview.

I am on a quest for the best in Texas.....

What are your favorites?

Oh...Also in the Heights...close to Hogg Middle School and Reagan High School. There is a little stand on the Corner of 11th and Yale I think....called "Someburger"...During Rita...I was driving around town trying to find an ATM and some gas and I stopped there......not it's one of my favorites also.

Princes is great....so are the Shakes.

My parents met at Prince's when he was on leave - he was dating her sister but dropped her like a hot rock. That was when Prince's was downtown and it was like American Graffiti. We went there with all my cousins the night the Astrodome opened (Astros v. Yankees). I was more excited about going to Prince's! My parents knew the Prince's and the Fingers families back then - they all went to school together and such.

My fave hamburgers are In 'n Out Burgers, Whataburger, and Chris Madrid's.

Yep that's about where it was. When I was a kid that place was still pretty hopping. I think there are a couple still left but at the time there was only that one and the one by Fingers Furniture. It was so much fun because it was a drive-in with skating car hops - the first car hops in the nation were at Prince's and they got a cover of Life mag which was a big deal then.

Cafe del Sol in Katy at Franz and Mason... It's a little Mexican food place with so-so mexican food... BUT their Chipotle Burger is the best burger I have EVER had... Relatives ask for it... Even ask us to bring them to them when we visit... If you're in the area, do yourself a favor and try one...

Madrid's is in an old converted gas station off of I believe San Pedro in San Antonio - we have to go through a really art deco type neighborhood to get there. In 'n Out is a chain out in California - the menu has 3 hamburgers, Single, Double or Triple, French Fries and maybe onion rings - that's it. They are like the burgers I remember as a kid over at Price's on Wirt Rd...just darn good burgers. That's Price's, not Prince's!! They had very good burgers and they were $.25 each so we only got to go if we were good because that was a lot of money when you factored in a family of 6!! Now, that price would be like stealing!

If we aren't restricting this to Texas, there is a small place in Blacksburg, Virginia by the name of Mike's. Under only a few names, it has been in continuous operation since the early 1960s. They serve a burger called a TDC, stands for Tech Delight with Cheese. Comes on french bread with lettuce and tomato and mayo if you like. Damn thing is unbelievably greasy and it is almost mandatory that it be consumed with an order of fries soaked in ketchup. If you ever get there, be sure to stop by. It is located at the end of the mall entrance to Virginia Tech.

And on that "out of Texas" note, may I nominate 5 Guys in the Greater Northern Virginia area. Several locations in the area including Alexandria, Richmond Highway near Fort Belvoir, and "down there by Potomac Mills" Mall. Grease is not optional, fries are cut dirty and fried fresh, and you must tell them what you want on your burger or it comes naked. Free peanuts to shell and eat while you wait. Best eaten in the joint as the grease will congeal quickly on the ride home.....:D

I ran across a place that I would bet you never heard of and even if you found it you may not go in. It is called the Greenwood Grocery and is located in Greenwood, about 12-13 miles north of Decatur in Wise County. The town might have 50 people (I did not check the obits today so I might be off a little). It is an old time country store with a few grocery staples and a small grill. The hamburgers are great and the onion rings are quite a side. It is also a place where a handful of small kids come in after school, pick out some candy and the lady behind the counter (Linda) puts it on the family tab. It brought back memories from life a long time ago. I thought I would include the pic just so you would know what I meant when I said you "may not go in."

Yep, sure does. I don't know which one Harold and Kumar went to but we usually go to the one in Huntington, NY (near the Walt Whitman Mall on Long Island). We don't go out of our way to eat there when the best Pizza and Deli's in the world are just a hop skip and a jump away but the kids really like those little tiny hamburgers with the freeze dried onions on them. The buildings look like a little white castle too. Like I said, quirky little joint...and it is always packed in with people.

All right guys,

One of these is off the beaten path, the other one just hard to find.

When in San Antonio, try Joe's hamburgers on Blanco Road. They are south of Fresno, close to Edison HS. HOLE IN THE WALL.

The other place is called Alamo Springs cafe. IF you ever go to see the bats exit at the railroad tunnel between Comfort and Fredricksburg (County Road number 9), there actually is a resturant located there. You won't believe the hamburgers (homemade buns, homemade onion rings, and homemade potato chips!!). Full menu and bar to boot!

I've been to Chris Madrids (very good), Chesters (good), Texas Roadhouse (good), Fuddruckers (good, but seeming to get worse). The two I describe are much better, in different ways. Joes is like a GOOD White Castle, while Alamo Springs is almost cartoonish, when it comes out (big burger). Both are very, VERY Good.
