View Full Version : The worst city in Texas?

Who you got?

I think I'll nominate....

El Paso. There's nothing there, it's big but it's also...not big. Hot as hell, plus it's almost not part of Texas. Not part of Texas=sux

I know some of my mojo buddies will be all over me for this, but the worst is Odessa. If the state of Texas ever had to take a dump, Odessa would be the anus from which said dump would emerge.

Although I think Dallas and Laura Miller give it a run for 1st place, i nominate Lubbock, mainly for the ineptitude of its city government alone.
This town constently runs off opportunities for large employers to locate in lubbock such as the walmart distribution center in Plainview.

They are building a multimillion dollar feeway through a town that has 10 minutes of traffic a day, and even that does not even remotely resemble Houston/ Dallas/ austin. With Loop 289, one can get pretty much anywhere in Lubbock in 25 minutes or less. Sound good to any of you folks from Houston or Dallas? Instead lets build a freeway that nobody needs...and name it after a lesbian in one of the most conservative cities in America... makes sense to me.

The water sucks!

No lakes within an hour drive, don't even say the "waterhole with 3 eyed fish from farm runoff Buffalo Springs Lake" either!

Wind about 300 days a year, sandblasting on about 50 of those.

If Tech and my relatives left Lubbock, I would NEVER have a desire to return.

There are not near as many quality football games to pick from each week...:(

No trees taller than a tumbleweed once you get out of the residential areas...

No alcohol sales in city limits( like this really slows down consumption of booze, all it does is feed the litttle monopoly known as the Strip")

1. Austin....lovely city, lovely lanscape, but UT and State Congress together= 2 strikes and Austin is out.

2. Pretty much anything east of I-45 save Tyler.

3. The Metroplex: "I ain't from Dallas, I'm from Texas"...truer words have never been sung.

Gee...what a shock.

But, I will concur about the city government. Too bad I can't change the government overnight. Hell, I don't vote for them. If there was a change in the thinking on how Lubbock is run (i.e. allow alcohol, pull the industrial areas out of the Canyon lakes area and make it a nice residential area, take a risk to get high-tech jobs out here--tax breaks and incentives, close the damn feedlot on Slaton Hwy), then it wouldn't be bad. Hell, Vegas is in the damn desert but has stuff to do. It's not known for it's natural scenery. The landscape around Lubbock isn't that terrible. The windy days are an inconvenience but a few wild windy days are better than consistent humidity and 90+ heat.

Why you gotta hate on Marsha Sharp?

Keep in mind I lived there, so I have the right to say these things. At least you see the substance behind my resons.

i didn't hate on marsha, I just pointed out the hypocrisy of naming the biggest thing in Lubbock after something the city supposedly dislikes...

You did live there. I live here now and Lubbock is not as ****** as you make it. It is not a total wasteland. The government seems to try to make it that way. But it's not. The changes in Lubbock won't occur overnight, but it can be a good city. When the city of Lubbock decides to use Tech to their advantage (yes, they still haven't done that) then we can keep the population here and get some changes done.

The majority of citizens may not like the lifestyle of Marsha Sharp (although officially she hasn't come out--at least I don't think so), but too bad. Her program got Tech national recognition (the United Spirit Arena was built on the Women's program, not the men) and I'm glad she got honored for that. Believe me, there were MANY that did not like the idea that the Freeway was named after Sharp. I guess not everything can be to their liking. Not even in Lubbock.

The 3 worse for sure all have 1 thing in common, and thats stupid driviers...

Waco... Every time some new murder pops up they test new technology out there infact several of the latest forensics since 80's have been tested out there and has changed capturing criminals, not to mention if it's that time of day when moms picking up the kids get off the road! Just cause your in a suv doesn't mean you run me over as please so stop crying when i drop my beverage on you're windshield.

Another lovely town has to be Bryan college station, morons can't drive for crap there they feel the need to pass everyone in front of of them (pst when i drive i average 85-90 on predominate empty highway roads) and the best part is watching them try to pass you even when common since shows trucks or cars will never beat a motorcycle... Aside from driving those people act like they never seen someone of half African descendant look "not gangster" i aint your n.i to the double g.a nor can i bust a flow and drop a beat for you boxing isn't my 2nd nature nor do i have a 9 gat or heart though if i did you'd be my next head shot out side of counter strike.

Another horrid town I've had the uncanny luxury of driving through is Abilene that place would be the type of town no one would really care about if it got destroyed or fell into the ocean, and whats up with these people around here the first time i went through i was with my mother around the time "the fast and the furious" came out next thing i know everyone thinks they're a street racer around this place even the kiddies in that old rusted 80 army tank. The next time i went was when i had my own car and yes ironically 2 fast 2 furious came out, and it seems every ****** there was reeving there engine at me like they wanted a race first year i had my license so i ain't losing it that fast. and the 5th time i went through was on my own again got my crotch rocket and go figure Tokyo drift had came out about some month ago, and i'm driving through and had to get food and beverage and yeah... Some ****** failed drifted into an accident. Lets just say on a side note this town is infatuated with the imports, car modifications, and the fast and the furious trilogy. Vin diesel would be the god of this town and would have his selection of every women of his choosing men would attend to his needs with the snap of a finger, and I'm sure after every high school game they gather together and play need for speed!

Houston like someone said just the traffic and over excessive rain and maybe crime.

Dallas kill the crime and the constant construction.

San Antonio... SPEAK ENGLISH I'M NOT YOUR "ESE" OR "HOLMES" AND THAT RED BANDANNA YOUR SPORTING ISN'T GANGSTER, if so the pancake isle is straight on lock by Aunt Jemima's.

Austin fix your traffic.

Temple learn how to construct...

WOW! You start putting all the cities you don't like in Texas together and pretty soon Texas isn't as great a place as everyone says it is. I didn't like the Port Arthur area but I had to live and work there four days out of the week in 1999 which forced me to be away from my family. That sucked and clouded my perspective. abilene is not loaded with bad drivers, its probably the high school crowd you ran into. sure i see many high school kids speeding and doing crazy things. its not very often you see a wreck though, and if you do, its even rarer for it not to involve a high schooler. its not like the 50 year old janitors and school teachers are street racing. the worst drivers are in the big cities, always cutting you off.

jtk lived in San Antonio last Summer and really liked it. It's a horribly underrated city in his opinion. The only thing he hated is that his daily commute took him up and down I-10 and the construction South of 410 made it a nightmare. jtk also found the area around 281 and 410 to suck a lot because of the construction. Like any other city, San Antonio has it's bad spots and like any other city, if you have any common sense at all you will stay away from them, but San Antonio had a cultural identity that no other major city in Texas has. If you don't like Hispanics or Spanish/Mexican culture, you will despise San Antonio, but if you can appreciate that culture, San Antonio will give you something you wont find in another major Texas city (no, jtk does not consider El Paso to be "major").

jtk also found San Antonio's natural beauty to be vastly underrated. No major Texas city outside of Austin can boast the pure natural beauty of San Antonio. jtk helped his friends move to an area in the North central part of town near 1604 and Bitters and he found that area to be very lovely. Very clean and very nice without the price tag of Highland Park or Southlake and a physical beauty that neither one of those two towns can even dream of.

jtk can understand disliking parts of the city or a suburb or something, but jtk would really like to hear an explanation as to why anybody would hate on the city as a whole. Having only experienced the touristy places growing up and then living in the city for a while and experiencing the whole place first had, jtk came away very impressed.

BTW, Abilene drivers are okay until any form of precipitation his the ground. Then it's Thunderdome.

Ding Ding Ding....we have a winner, jtk. Well, I guess you might hate SA if you are consumed by Spurs hatred, but aside from that....

San Antonio, when you get right down to it, is an awesome city. Very few places have the identity that San An does, and certainly none in Texas can trace their roots back to 18th century Canary Islanders and Spanish Conquistadores. Downtown SA is one of the few Texas cities you can walk in, and is full of all sorts of architectural treasures. The missions are a national historical treasure. The opening of the new Toyota plant has injected a huge shot into an already pretty good economy. You can fine fine dining, great central-Texas German BBQ, and superior Tex-Mex all in one place. Several pretty good universities, and one outstanding one (Trinity). The best HS football district in Texas. Seriously, what's not to like? Vibrant churches and houses of worship of all stripes. Even the "bad" parts of town are no worse than the "bad" parts of Dallas, Houston, Austin.

Every foreign visitor I have shown around Texas (and that's a few) have come away liking SA better than anywhere else they went.

Ah, yes. jtk found the city of San Antonio to be wrapped up in everything "Spurs". jtk is not really a Spurs fan (he's a huge Mavericks fan), but he liked the passionate following he saw in San Antonio. Those people love their Spurs and that is a good thing. jtk can see why the players like giving back to the city. jtk also thinks that is a reason why San Antonio could easily support an NFL team, but that is another thread all together.

BTW, jtk looooooves Mexican/TexMex food and while in San Antonio, jtk was in freaking Heaven. He put on a good 20 pounds while there despite running around Madison Square Park every day. Damn good food.

I know some of my mojo buddies will be all over me for this, but the worst is Odessa. If the state of Texas ever had to take a dump, Odessa would be the anus from which said dump would emerge.

Well if by that you are talking about the landscape, there isn't any argument it is lousy. It's worse now than years back due to the town being quite poor in many parts.

Now if we're talking the makeup of the people, I disagree. In West Texas, you will find some of the friendliest people in the world.
When I grew up there, we didn't lock our doors if we left the house. People didn't steal from you. And they would help anyone in need, still do that and literally would give you the shirt off their back.
So depending on your measuring stick, you may not be on target.

My vote would be Laredo. Almost everyone speaks Spanish, not because they are native to the language. It's just the language used and that upsets me because it should be English in America.
It's also hotter than hades there in the summer.

jtk lived in San Antonio last Summer and really liked it.

OK, I'll oblige. There are some very good people in San Antonio. I'd have to say that most people in San Antonio are better than the majority from other states. As such, none of the major cities in Texas rate very well in my books compared to the smaller places when it comes to the people. I'm perfectly fine with the Hispanic culture and the city is beautiful in areas. I love the cost of living. I absolutely despise the paper, TV, and radio coverage. I just think it's a loser city as the sole supporter of the metro area. Dallas has their problems, but there are plenty of other cities to make the metroplex go around. SA is too centered around certain companies keeping a monopoly. I really think they suffer from an inferiority complex compared to the other 2 big metro areas in Texas. Naturally, I'm not going to like the city that is the main rival for the sports teams that I like. I'd hate Austin and Bryan-College Station even if I wasn't a Tech fan just because of the liberal leanings of Austin and general crappiness of BCS. Oh yeah, I think San Antonio is a lazy city. Everything from roads to houses to arenas are done cheaply. It's just a sloppy, don't care town. That's the body language of the residents.

lonny23
03-05-2007, 03:25 AM

Don't get me wrong, I have a lot of fun in SA. It sure isn't about Hispanics for me because I like the RGV. I'm not a big fan of Laredo, though. It never can be about race for me because I'm usually the minority at work and that's the case on this deployment, too. Survey says out of 17 people:

1 Puerto Rican
7 Hispanics
6 blacks
2 Asian-Americans
1 white guy

Believe me, you don't make it too well in the armed forces if you have problems with any of the races because you can count on having to work with them.

For the record, I think SA is one of the better places to visit, but I always speak in terms of living there.

Ah, yes. jtk found the city of San Antonio to be wrapped up in everything "Spurs". jtk is not really a Spurs fan (he's a huge Mavericks fan), but he liked the passionate following he saw in San Antonio.

Yeah, I appreciate the fervent following the Spurs have, but it sure is a pain to live amongst them. Pretty much every NBA fan I've ever met who lived in SA and doesn't root for the Spurs absolutely despises that team. It's not just me and we don't do it because of the players, because they are pretty good guys except for a few dirty tactics here and there.

The average European is tri-lingual, so therein lies the difference. ;)

I would prefer that our schools made learning another language(s) a higher priority from a young age. I feel like being able to communicate in different languages, and learn other cultures is extremely important. I love the USA, but also recognize the importance of being able to communicate effectively in a world that's getting "smaller" each day due to expanding technology.

Besides English, I've studied Spanish and Portuguese (continue to do so) and have found it benefits me from a communication point of view but also on the job market. It's usually the first thing an interviewer brings up.

Complete agreement....ALL education should be bi-lingual.

Those who don't speak English should have to start learning English as soon as they started in public school. Those who ONLY speak English would have start learning a 2nd language in kindergarden.

MK beat me to this one. There is no worst place/town in Texas. Even Vidor is making great leaps forward. There are some backward places left in East Texas, but they are not like they used to be. So, to sum up: Look to the east, west, north, and northeast for your worst list, because you will not find a legitimate one in Texas.

Totally agree. Matter of fact, they should take it a step further. With the technology that's available, it would be quite easy to have organized video webchats between our kids and kids from say, France, so they can have intelligent discussion about matters that would directly affect their future. I think it would promote tolerance and understanding to listen to opposing points of view.

I didn't realize this until fairly recently, but our greatest capacity for language learning is from birth through roughly 12 years of age. That's when most of the cognitive development takes place. I've seen people express concern over confusing a child by exposing them to one or more foreign languages early on, but I think we can greatly underestimate what kids are capable of given what's been proven in various studies. I only started learning Spanish in junior high, but wish I could have started earlier.

You are exactly right. Every single study ever undertaken has shown that the best time to teach languages is as young as possible. Putting it off till the later grades is counter--productive.

You will notice that kids from truly bilingual households don't have big confusion issues.

Belton Ramonce isn't a celebrity.

Killeen and Copperas cove, you're like a mix of Waco and Abilene combine.

and there go my choices.

By far the worst city in Texas, Copperas Cove. The city is complete garbage. It is a one road city, pathetic.

The water sucks!

I've never tasted water like Lubbock's. Sucks is putting it mildly. It's been 20 years since I had a sip of it, and I can almost taste the awfulness now!

I know! I've been in SA 3 years and I have never been called ESE or HOLMES, etc. Sounds like he has some race issues.

The only Holmes I know is Holmes HS! :D

I think Lonny keeps excel spreadsheets for towns he hates, teams he likes, etc. His hatred of San Antonio is pretty irrational. I can't figure it out.

Word! His hatred for SA is really ********! lol

All my kids were exposed to the Spanish/English language at born. In my house we speak both, at my Mother-in-laws it is only Spanish and at my parents it is English. I think it is great for kids to be exposed to different languages.

San Antonio is a great city. The people who think that they would be called names have never enjoyed our city.

SA is a great place. Classy NBA fans, no high school steroid/cocaine scandals, very few cultural racist/redneck/general hate issues, probably because most people there have lives. Seriously does not belong in a discussion about worst places in TX.

I'm not pulling the race card. I still don't understand why it bothers you to hear another language. It really is bizarre. What skin comes of your nose if people choose to speak Spanish?

The reason it bothers me is that if you enter a business in Laredo, the first person you come in contact with addresses you in Spanish and not English.
English is our primary language and should be used as such by every citizen while in public.

I have no problem with those of Latin descent speaking at home in whatever language they choose.

And I'm all for being able to speak in various languages. It's a good thing.

But go across the border into Mexico and see if the first person you contact addresses you in English or German or French.

Yo hablo espanol.

You know I just thought of something. It would be kinda wierd to go to a Chinese restaurant in Paris or Frankfurt. Do the Chinese people there speak French or German? That would be something to see.

The first time I heard someone with a Middle Eastern surname and appearance speaking Spanish, it blew me away.

And of course it was the same for the Chinese in the restaurants there doing so.

It really makes an impression and certainly isn't expected.

It's strange when we have a visual in our minds of what should come out of the mouth and what is the usual and then it's different. It takes a little getting used to for sure.

I wonder if Americans traveling to other places at some point came across to the natives as unusual if we spoke their language?

I do not think it would be too much trouble for you to tell the person that you do not speak Spanish. I'm sure he will be more than happy to serve you in English once he knows.

Done it.

Been to Mexico City on business, and it is seen as a pleasant surprise. It is not expected, but welcome. Same in Ireland (Gaelic), etc. French despise us, because the world revolves around English.

Worst town?? Laredo. Ick.

Teaching in bi-lingual is a wonderful idea, as long as everyone is prepared to pay for it. I think that is the whole language barrier issue right now. What does it cost to teach a language (English) that for generations has been implied that it would be a skill possessed by the child when they entered school? This way of thinking is not free.

My wife's parents speak little English. They have lived in the US for over 40 years. My point is, if you are satisfied with a life style such as theirs, then there is not a reason to learn English. But, on the other hand, if you want to get ahead in this Country (North of Falfurrias anyway), you had better have a good handle on English as well as Spanish.

WOW! You start putting all the cities you don't like in Texas together and pretty soon Texas isn't as great a place as everyone says it is. I didn't like the Port Arthur area but I had to live and work there four days out of the week in 1999 which forced me to be away from my family. That sucked and clouded my perspective. Thank God for H.S. football and BBQ!!Whoa buddy :D

You guys know I could throw a whole laundry list of towns out here that I don't think much of, but I will say that Texas towns relatively speaking blow most other towns away. Of the many armpits in Texas, the one I like least is Jasper. Whoever said east of I-45 was on the right track, but it's mostly east of I-35 for me. There are a few places in that corridor I like though.Jasper is nice :D
