Does Sandy Duncan (star of Broadway Musicals, most notably Peter Pan) count? She's from Tyler.

J Frank Wilson and the Cavaliers (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/J._Frank_Wilson)
A one hit wonder back in the early '60's with a song called "Last Kiss"
The chorus: "Well where oh where can my baby be...the Lord took her away from me...she's gone to heaven so I've got to be good...so I can see my baby when I leave this world"
J Frank worked as a nurse aide in the 80's at a retirement home in Lufkin. My Grandmother was a co-worker of his.
Also, my mom and dad gave him a ride back to Lufkin once right about the time that his big hit was on the charts. He bought a brand new Corvette in Rusk,Texas and was driving it back to Lufkin. My Dad spotted him on the side of the road with the 'Vette wrapped around a pine tree. My Dad said he was drunk as a skunk and laughing his head off.

That was him...
Sad story...according to folks around town he had resorted to begging for money for booze. The music industry really chews people up and spits them out.

ya know..that song had a good groove to it..simple, yet appealing..shame he ended up the way he did...reminds me of how(much more tragic)bobby fuller(of "i fought the law" fame) ended up. of course his label was del-fi, which has a history of bad things happening..ie:richie valens, bobby fuller.

Yep that is a sad story and my he was a patient of my dad's when he died in a nursing home. He basically made chump change from that one hit.

I love lynard skynard (classic & legendary band) but I have to admit that I was a liimp bizkit fan when they were still together. I have many of their songs in my ipod. I was a bigger Korn fan though and still am. I like most all kinds of music except country. Limp was excellent live though and they would get the crowd going insane. They were the ones blamed for instigating the riots at the 99 woodstock. The wes guy (former lead guitarist that always had different faces painted on) was actually a very talented guitar player. They sold millions and millions of cds.

As far as Houston and rock and roll goes, it would definitely be ZZ TOP. They are going to be the last performers at the Houston Livestock Show this year.

Kirk Franklin
My family, and I, actually knew Kirk before he blew up. He went OD Wyatt High School, and before he formed the group, "The Family", he was a musician for the D/FW Mass Choir when my mother sung with them. He then started "Kirk Franklin & The Family" in the early 90's, and he asked my mother and his other friends that he knew with talent to help him form, and sing in the group.

BTW, Pearl Jam covered that song around 1999 and had a big hit with it. I thought it was pretty good.
