Who was your favorite sports writer growing up? I liked Tex Maule, Frank Deford and Rick Tellander with Sports Illustrated.

Locally I liked Ken Blackistone in Abilene, and later Randy Galloway in Dallas. Never cared for Blackie Sherrod that much.

Bill Hart and Al Pickett both used to write some great stuff for the Abilene Reporter-News.

(Maybe not a "sportwriter," but he made his commentary in print) Dirk West, the cartoonist who wrote for the Lubbock Avalanche Journal. I can remember when we would come visit our grandparents in Abernathy, my grandad would save all of the old sportspages so I could catch up on Dirk's works. I loved his weekly preview cartoon that would depict the goings on in the conference. Each time the Raiders lost, Raider red would appear the following week with another hole shot in his hat. His wit and old-fashioned humor will forever remind me of the "old" days in the 70's and 80's when the SWC was where all of my favorite schools played.
Many mascots today are still based on his work, such as the cartoonish Bevo, Herbie Husker( I know not SWC,) and Raider Red.

RIP Dirk West.

sometimes i think Rome is awesome with his interviews and commentary. Other times, I feel like I'm at a party back in college, and need to be drunk to enjoy it more.

Jim Rome has minimal going on upstairs I do believe - and his audience is not much different.

The last time I listened to him - he interviewed George Karl for about 5 minutes - nothing big really - then he and his audience discussed the interview for 3 hours. Wow.

I think Justice will eventually wind up on ESPN - they love him.
