Guys,
We go back and forth about basketball, but you're seeing history unfold before your eyes and most of you don't even know it. Here is one of my posts from another board:
Chuck Cooperstein said the Mavs had the 7th best 50 game start ever after the game and that made me look to see who was better. I also thought I'd add in which teams had the best seasonal records of all-time because this is the territory the Mavs are wading through this year. 10 of the 11 teams to win 65 or more games have won a title and Dallas needs a 24-8 to go with the 41-9 to get to 65-17. This will probably go down as one of the 6 best regular seasons ever.
95-96 Bulls 72-10 title with 45-5 start.
96-97 Bulls 69-13 title with 44-6 start.
71-72 Lakers 69-13 title with 43-7 start (33 win team).
66-67 76ers 68-13 title with 46-4 start.
72-73 Celtics 68-14 Eastern CF with 41-9 start.
91-92 Bulls 67-15 title with 41-9 start.
85-86 Celtics 67-15 title with 41-9 start.
99-00 Lakers 67-15 title with 39-11 start.
70-71 Bucks 66-16 title with 41-9 start.
82-83 76ers 65-17 title with 43-7 start.
86-87 Lakers 65-17 title with 38-12 start.
Other fast-starting teams:
49-50 Syracuse Nationals 51-13 NBA Finals with 41-9 start.
05-06 Pistons 64-18 Eastern CF with 41-9 start.
05-06 Spurs 63-19 Western CSF with 40-10 start.
84-85 Celtics 63-19 NBA Finals with 41-9 start.
90-91 Trailblazers 63-19 Western CF with 41-9 start.
64-65 Celtics 62-18 title with 42-8 start.
87-88 Lakers 62-20 title with 41-9 start.
80-81 76ers 62-20 Eastern CF with 41-9 start.
Only 7 teams have ever won more than 41 games in their first 50 games and only 17 have ever won 41 of the 50. Almost all of the fast starters were good from Go, but Dallas wasn't this year. The Mavs 41-5 record in Games 5-50 is beat only by the 42-4 of the 66-67 76ers and tied at 41-5 by the 95-96 Bulls. Dallas is one bad start away from being an everyday topic about breaking 70 wins.
We all know that no matter how much you win in the regular season, it doesn't matter in the playoffs, but I'm going to tell you right now that the Mavs aren't going to take anybody lightly in the playoffs. It's going to take the best bank robbery of all-time to keep Dallas from winning the title this year unless they take major casualties and numerous amounts. You don't win 65 games or more and not take home titles. It's only happened once in 11 tries. After the 3rd week in June, we're going to all be saying that we saw one of the best years ever from Dallas in 06-07. The scary thing is it would've been even better if they didn't start the year 0-4.

Guys,
I just look forward to every game. I expect Dallas to win no matter what the circumstances are.
I'm sitting on the 6th row behind the basket for the 76ers game.

The "Seventh Best Fifty Game Start" is not "history-making". It sure isn't history until they actually win an NBA Championship. If they do that, then we might could call them one of the better teams to go through a single season. That is, unless your defintion of "history making" is "something, anything at all, happening".
This is just a really meaningless stat, like the kind the MNF football announcers dig into late in the game:
"Daunte Culpepper has the 3rd best completion percentage on 2nd down in the 4th quarter"
"The New York Jets are 2nd best in the league in YAC during the final 2 minutes of the 1st half".
I mean, "7th best fifty game start" isn't quite that level, but almost.

Wow, very enlightening stats as always. I wonder where the 05-06 Pistons rank, oh 41-9, well thats the same as the Mavs...hmmm imagine that:confused:.

Why aren't they a title team this year? You could be right, but I can't see anything from this year that gives you ammo to say it.

They don't play 5 on 8 every game. Just to throw a number out there, they might play 5 on 8 about 10 times a year and they're going to win some of those games. They played 5 on 8 in 2 of their 9 losses. The other 7 are on them. They'll have some 5 on 8 games in the playoffs. I expect more there.

Not winning a title won't put them in the Top 20 teams of all time discussion according to the sports shows, but winning will put them in the Top 10. I think history will be made and you guys can watch with me.

There is a big difference between the 2 teams:
1. Pistons started hot and cooled off.
2. Mavs started 0-4 and haven't cooled off.
3. Pistons play in easier conference and had easier first 50 games.
4. Dallas has already played the hardest part of the schedule.

OK, guys.
It's time to put your money where your mouth is. You do a lot of talking about Susan Lucci and the middle of the year. I'm taking the Mavs and you can pick one team that will go further in the playoffs. I'll bet you $100 the Mavs go further.

That's one of the teams that they're trying to be compared to when the season is over. You can't say it yet, but I expect they'll compare favorably when it's all said and done.
