Here's my list of the top 10 rappers out TODAY. I have tons and tons of respect for MY choice of music, specifically rap, and if you think anyone on here "sucks", lemme know someone better. It's not a challenge or anything, but I realized theres too many artist to listen to at all, and I would actually like for some new names to be on this list.

1. Nas
2. Cormega
3. Immortal Technique
4. Dead Prez
5. Z-Ro
6. Talib Kweli
7. Mos Def
8. Aesop Rock
9. Zion I
10. Atmosphere

Have any of you heard of any of them? Yodel.

I must be old. I haven't heard of even one. #7 does look familiar though. I like Snoop, Dre, DMX, SPM, and Eminem but I don't really listen to rap much.

I can't really get with Talib, him and Common are not my style. Nas used to be the Man, but he needs to reinvent himself or something. Mos Def has some skills. I could not tell you who the rest of those guys are.

You can add Outkast to my list.......I think they are the ONLY group that will have a legacy like a Rock Band....I mean 20 years from now I would go to an Outkast concert.....we won't even remember these other guys. Rapping USED to be a talent....now all you need is a bass line and a catchy line....no matter how stupid:
Laffy Taffy
Chicken Noodle Soup
King Kong...

At what point did hip hop die and who killed it? Some say it was the Franchise Boys...I say it was dead before that.....Tag Team and "whoop! there it is" was the beginning of the end IMO

Agreed. all of the lyricist that are out there now(Talib, Common, and Nas) seem like they try to hard, instead of just flowing. The new guys that are coming in just want to make some money, they just seem to care about the sales not the content IMHO.

true...they try too hard to "bring it back"
Its all about sales now....money..come up with a catch phrase that's gonna catch on in the mainstream and get paid, they way Tag team did and the term "bling, Bling"

I think that Tupac was good, im really not a huge fan of some of his stuff...but alot of his songs get you thinking no matter what side of the spectrum your on. Dear Mr. President was pretty good.

He raps whats real...Maybe it is money selling drugs and such thats his life..Id rather him be talkin about real stuff then lying in his rhymes like 90% of other rapers..and if u analyze his lyrics its alot more deeper than just money and drugs.Lil Wayne also freestyles everything he hasn't written a rhyme since he was 16. So when you hear a song of his keep in that mind that none of that was written. He's only 24 and he's been in the game for 13 years..the best has yet to come

I think he's older than 24......Jako like about his age for awhile too...it's about a target audinece.....Maybe I'm missing the boat, but when I think of "Great Rappers" Lil Wayne dosent pop into my head....as far a longevity....I think BG made Cash Money what it is today.

Speaking of Age....you know Free from 106 and Park....she's 41. Her album got pushed back so much because they didnt know how to market her....she was on a "teen" show.....but she was 41.....can she make it with that being her target audience?

Lil Wayne is 28 now I believe... its not cool to be an old rapper anymore... though I think it will become a trend again in the future with all the snapping going on... but I really dont mind the snapping its like they tapped into a new kind of rap... not very lyrical but its entertaining so I dont know why people hate on it... they're club bangers...

Once something makes it to MTV....people think it's new......MTV is so commercial it's crazy. That's when you know someting is dead...good things go to MTV to die. Screw Music wasnt a fad...it was a way of life....Screw music to houston is what House music was to DC...once it left home....it was tainted. Like I said...it's not something you can just jump into....I grew up with it and since screw died...it's garbage.

You guys are killing me with this talk about Lil Keke, Master P, and a lot of other southern rappers being called great.

They're moving away from what hip hop really is, and I don't like that.

The rise of the 'dirty south', 'bling-bling' and 'crunk' mentality was a death knell for everything that was good about rap/hip hop music. Back in the day, rap music was often about the message it contained, than appealling to the MTV/VH1/BET-driven mainstream.

Immortal Technique explains in his lyrics...

"The bling-bling era was cute, but it's about to be done. I leave you full eclipse (of clips) like the moon blocking the sun." - Immortal Technique, "Industrial Revolution"

"If you go platinum it's got nothin' to do with luck / it just means that a million people are stupid as ****." - Immortal Technique, "Industrial Revolution"

For me, the thing that sets rap(good rap) apart from all other genres of music, is it's availability for deep deep deep lyrics. I can state that I listen to deep music. People poop on rap these days because they see people like Paul Wall holding drink in his hand talking about how he hits up the club everyday.

I'm not holding it against you, there is a time to listen to the club bangers...which is in the club or on a friday night cruising the street. You should never however mention them in a top 10 list in rap.

Shawn Carter is a marketable rapper. A street guy who knows how to market his flow. (Reason behind flow changes.)

In the end, as a lyricist, he's a great rapper. Top 10...nada.

If you want to name the Top 10 Moguls/Best Marketed Rappers of All-Time, you'd have...

1) Eminem

2) Tupac Shakur

3) Snoop Dogg

4) P.Diddy

5) Dr.Dre

6) Master P

7) L.L. Cool J

8) Jay-Z

9) Wu-Tang

10) Busta Ryhmes

....does that mean they're the greatest rappers of All-Time? Hell no.

Rick Ross... I like him but he already looks old... Cool and Dre make his beats thats the only thing good about Rick Ross... knows the value of respect

Jibbs... needs to stick to boxing....

Young Joc is probably the best of the group you have under potential

DSR... Big Tuck... Tum Tum... and Fat ******* are alright but still lack the lyrical content so I dont see the potential you see...

Young Jeezy is not a great rapper haha not at all a great rapper... hes a good dealer though... and he knows the value of respect...

During the "East Coast vs. West Coast" crap, it wasn't the whole East Coast against the whole West Coast. It was really just Biggie vs. Tupac. Snoop and Dr. Dre didn't even want to get involved with it, which is one of the many reasons Dr. Dre left Death Row Records. It is also one of the reasons Snoop left Death Row and signed with Master P and No Limit Records.

Lil Wayne is not 28!!! Hes 24 turning 25 this year. He was born in 1982..I know people that used to mess with him deep in that 17th ward. His style changed due to maturation and growth not ghostwriting. Think about it you arent going to be using the same vocabulary that you used when your were 15/16 when you are 24 yrs old. His change started way before dedication 2 it started on those mixtapes before The Carter I...His style is very lyrical you have to analyze what he says and look for the metaphors. How could Gillie the kid ghost for him? Hes never been hot.

you can say the same thing about Jay-Z. if you listen to his early stuff he was a fast rapper then over a period of time he slowed his rhymes down. because of that nas felt that Jay-Z was trying to be like him thus the beef started

all i know is that i saw lil wayne get robbed this summer right off of ST. Charles AVE in New Orleans. he's a good rapper but an idiot. he was walking down the street with no posse and wearing all his chains. then a car rolled up on him and took his bling.

straight off the cash money web site

Although there has been much debate on the subject of who is or who isn't the “King of the South,” Lil Wayne isn’t worried about all the fuss as to who really lays claim to the title. As a veteran rap star, budding entrepreneur, and young scholar studying psychology at the University of Houston, Wayne's experience in the rap game, coupled with his amazing growth as an individual has placed him in a position only a handful of people in this industry reach.
"I've been in this game for thirteen years, so I'm not concerned with having to prove myself," Wayne says. "I don't have to prove anything, because my growth as a rapper and as a lyricist can be heard in my music." Indeed, with the release of his fifth solo album Tha Carter II, it’s obvious Dwayne Carter AKA "Weezy" is a top-notch rapper whose lyrics and artistic vision tower over the competition.
Wayne, 23, was born and raised in New Orleans’ notorious 17th Ward in a neighborhood called Hollygrove. As a child, the aspiring rapper listened to and idolized early Cash Money recording artists like Pimp Daddy and UNLV, who he cites as some of his early influences. A few years later, Wayne met Cash Money CEOs Ronald "Suga Slim" and Bryan "Baby” Williams (The Birdman) who would take him under their wings and help mold him into a prolific and profound artist. In 1995 at the age of 12, Wayne made his debut on Cash Money recording artist B.G.’s album, True Story.
In 1997, the rap prodigy, along with Juvenile, Young Turk, and B.G. formed the New Orleans’ super-group the Hot Boys and dropped their seminal debut CD Get It How You Live. The record’s independent success garnered the young teenager legions of fans throughout the South and Midwest. He further distinguished himself as the MC to watch on the Hot Boys' platinum selling Universal debut Guerilla Warfare (1998) followed by 2003's Let Em Burn. In 2000, the group went on to receive a Source Award for "Group of the Year."
At age sixteen, Wayne launched his solo career with the release of the platinum selling Tha Block Is Hot (1999), where he earned a 1999 Source Award nomination for "Best New Artist." Clever wordplay, combined with his mature street savvy made the CD one of the year's most compelling albums. The young prodigy’s subsequent albums, Lights Out (2000), 500 Degreez (2002) and 2004's Tha Carter further solidified Lil Wayne's reputation as one of the South’s finest lyricists, but it was Tha Carter that finally forced rap fans beyond the South to recognize what die-hard “Weezy” fans knew all along: Lil Wayne was a hip hop force to be reckoned with.
As the newest venture on Lil Wayne's imprint, Young Money Entertainment via Cash Money/Universal Records, Tha Carter II is bound to thrill those who have watched this former Hot Boy mature since his first appearance on True Story. "Everyday I experience new things, and it’s these experiences I express creatively in my songs.” Lil Wayne, a perfectionist in the lab, has never been one to waste time. In fact, he has been known to complete five songs in a day. "I could do an entire album in a week," he brags, "But Tha Carter II took me a little longer – a month,” he deadpans. “I wanted to make sure everything was right."
Approaching Tha Carter II with the skills of a scientist, Lil Wayne dug through the vaults of his own material in order to analyze his distinct style. "Listening to the past few albums, I wanted to change it up slightly.” What fans will be hearing on Tha Carter II is a revised and refreshed Lil Wayne, from the scorching first single "Fireman," produced by newcomers Doe Boys, where Wayne drops blazing lyrics, to his second single "Grown Man,” featuring Young Money Record’s protégé Currency, where he comes at you hard, switching up both vocal tone and flow.
Wayne is no longer the young cocky boy from the South content with just spitting boastful rhymes. Aside from fans, fellow artists have also recognized his maturation as a well rounded musician. Consequently, Wayne’s poetic word play has earned him featured collaborations on Destiny’s Childs’ smash hit “Soldier” as well as a guest appearance on Avant’s single “You Know What.” These collaborations have exposed the gifted artist to a broader audience, demonstrating that his talent knows no boundaries. Wayne’s flow and choice of subject matter have also become more versatile. “Receipt” is one song that stands out to him, “Because it’s about love, and I’ve never done a love song before.”
Lil Wayne headed up production on Tha Carter II alongside other new up and coming producers. “Really, I listen to every beat that comes to the office, and I receive a lot of stuff. If I like it, I call them and use it.” Case in point, while Wayne was working in New York, he bumped into the Pop/R

Cash Money is the one making money...so why would they say his real age.....you have to have police reports to get the facts. I mean...it would be hard for a dude close to 30 to call himself "Lil" and rap to a targert audience in the 14-17 age group....Actors/Entertainers change their age/names all the time.....Jamie Foxx's name is Eric Bishop....how many of you knew that.

not me

You cant tell if that's a woman or a man by looking at the name.....when you're acting and you're trying to get a part....some thought that your resume would have a better chance of getting looked at if you were a woman so a lot of men change their names to a name that could go either way.

As for Wayne saying his age in one of his flows......Vanilla Ice said he was from the street in one of his. Record companies will tell you to do these things......he could be 23........who knows....but I know he takes classes at the University of Houston and many people are saying he was born in 1979.

"Lil' Wayne AKA Weezy F. Baby may not be a baby after all. Reports are that the 23-year-old emcee may in fact be holding back the years. The police report from his Monday arrest lists his D.O.B. as September 27, 1979, which would make him 26. Talk about fuzzy math."

1979... that would make him....28
