Wrong.
We aren't allowed to discuss racist white supremacy groups and those that support them. Big damn difference.

This April marks the 60th anniversary of Jackie Robinson breaking baseball's color line. I think firsts such as that courageous man's mark on history and the two African American Super Bowl coaches breaking the color barrier this Sunday are certainly worthy of being mentioned in the classroom and I' m wondering if it's being discussed.

I asked my kids about it...and from what I gather it is left up to the teacher. I had one of my daughters tell me that they will talk about a different person or event each day....while the other one said "what's black history month?".

Well, before it gets locked, no way.

Kids now, in general, have no respect for adults. We were watched by our adults. If you left home and did something stupid, an adult would see you and call your parents and you would catch hell at home. Now days, kids run around with impunity. They have nothing to fear. Thery aren't held responsible for their actions by society or the parents. Society doesn't care anymore because you could get sued or killed by a ticked off parent who insists their kid is a freakin' angel, even though he is in special ed. classes for not behaving at school.

I see it all the time. You have no idea how different it was from the 60's and 70's to now.

when i lived in the woodlands during my elementary days, we did something like that. we also had to do a research paper on someone who made a profound difference in the world. i picked up a cool looking book, about a black flier. thought it was a guy, because back then, doing a research paper on a girl was just not uttered...turned out it was bessie coleman, and was "surprised" to find it was a girl. ended up liking the book and really admiring coleman. ya know what it took to be not only a black flier, but also a woman! incredible story...

Not to sound too insensitive or something, but in reference to Black History Month, I'm waiting with baited breath (why would I eat bait anyway?) for there to be a "White Folks Whos' Families Immigrated Here Over 300 Years Ago From England and Just Consider Themselves to Be Americans Month" so I can feel the love too.

I don't feel any love for England or anything in Europe, nor do I experience any vague curiosity over it. I don't have any family members who remember the place and I have no history there. I'm a freakin American. I don't and will not ever understand the infatuation with Africa. As with me, none of these people have links to Africa. Many of their families have been here longer than even my family has. They also know no relatives in Africa or anyone who's alive who remembers anything about slavery or coming from Africa. They are Ameicans too.

It's time we all acted like it.

Hell you know whats pathetic. I live in a college town, have gone to school here in Denton since my sophmore year of high school. I see it all the time with the way adults act towards us "college kids". We get treated like crap in restaurants, grocery stores or most places of retail, because we are "poor" college kids.
At bars you will see more older men start crap[ with college kids than the other way around. Trust me I have seen a few different times where a older man would mouth of because he just didnt like a college kid opnly to have his *** get knocked out. I did it once and got banned from that bar because it was the owners best friend and not because he had ran his mouth all night.
This crap about kids and having no respect goes all on one thing and that owuld be paretns. I guess some of you "parents" arent quite as good as they were back in the 60 and 70's

I am sure you are a great mother that has raised some great kids. I believe there are more good parents in this world than not. I just cant sit here and let it all fall on the kids by doing that then they are becoming guilty of what they say us kids do and that is take no responsibility.
I know one day I will be a parent and hope I can be half the parent that mine were to me. Sorry if I offended you in anyway, I just cant sit here and let it all fall on the kids or this generation. Sure we are not perfect but damnit we are not that bad either.

Honestly I didn't go to school with a non-white until 8th grade. Then my new school's football coach was black, a bunch of new friends were black, and so on. I don't really remember talking specifically about " Black History," but I jumped headfirst into learning about it.

For those of you in Wichita falls that know who Larry Menefee is, that man taught all of us kids how to be men, regardless of race. To this day, I always remember how scared I was when I first met him(ignorance) and how much he still inspires me to treat people right. He really knew how to treat kids and teach them to treat each other right without having some agenda behind it. He may or may not realize the impact he had on many of us, but we still remember.

I am lucky that I had him as a coach and teacher, as it has touched the way I look at people who "are different from me" even today.

Since you brought this argument up, I, the white girl, will answer it.

ALMOST EVERY OTHER HISTORY LESSON TAUGHT IN SCHOOL IS ABOUT WHITE FOLKS FROM EUROPEAN COUNTRIES OR ENGLAND!

Okay, now I will step off the soapbox and say that I hope someday we will not need a special month to learn about the contributions of black Americans, but until we get there, I sure as hell am glad my boys are not growing up as ignorant as I did. Only black historical figures I knew about were Crispus Attucks (first casualty in Revolutionary War), Harriet Tubman (Underground Railroad), and George Washington Carver (invented peanut butter). We learned about Rosa Parks (Move ME!) and Martin Luther King (I have a dream...) on the daily news back in the stone age.

Note to GoOwls: Not meant as a personal attack, lots of us white folk have asked that question. I have just come to the conclusion that the knowledge gained is valuable. Remember, a mind is a terrible thing to waste. Mine was wasted a few times, though. Back in the day. ;) :)

I know, nothing personal taken, I just think that the arguement had it's day and that day has passed. All the focus on the black issues keeps us from focusing on moving forward as a society. All it serves now is to perpetuate the whole racial issue and continue to keep us apart.

We contiune to be reminded of how different we are, yet we are encouraged to be inclusive in spite of the aforementioned differences.

You can't have both, is my point. If we are to act inclusive, it is now dependant on the black community to allow us to forget the differences and move forward.

Continuing to remind us how bad we used to me serves no purpose.

It's like punishing a kid for breaking a glass, every day for the rest of his life. At some point the parent must forgive the kid and move on.

Your point is well taken, but I see in my boys' schools that Black History Month is now about historical figures and there's not a lot of "bad white folk!" crap during the lessons as there was when BHM first started. I really do feel that they get a better perspective on our history than we did. I wish we could just incorporate all these lessons and historical figures into our regular curriculuum but we're not there yet. Then we could all sing KumBahYa and hold hands. Hopefully, someday soon, the lessons will be simply known as American History and race can be noted in the text where approriate. I mean, really, I grew up thinking slavery was the only thing to talk about when people of color were the subject. Notable exceptions listed in previous post. And then Rosa (bless her heart) opened up my eyes. And I really do believe that Black History Month was designed to help minority children more than to slap the majority with "so, THEREs" Turns out it has helped a lot of folks. As it should. :)

I hear ya, I just had a different perspective than most folks my age did. I was raised on a working farm in the late 50's and 60's, and I saw how my grandfather respected and needed local blacks to help him work his farm and make a living on a 97 acre farm. I didn't hear the N-word in my parents and grandparents home (they all lived together). However, I did hear it all the time at the local small town store where all the old farmers with hundreds and thousand of acres to work would look down on the blacks and disrespect them ad nauseum.

I started school during the desegregation era, so I lived that whole thing too and all the accompanying tension that came with it.

Yes, there was a problem, but I know tons of blacks who have far exceded my career and they would take exception that they did anything other than earn it through hard work. I'm just tired of the excuses and revisionist history. Let's move on as a society and grow up a bit (not you, just making a statement).

That's all I really meant by my words.
