I think they should hire a person who is already there. Tony Holmes. He played college ball at UT and was a excellent DB. He knows all the X's and O's. Has been a DC before and has been through a year with coach Ron Mendoza and knows the traditions. Tony would fit the mold of coordinators that were there before. I think that Dane Johnson is looking to move up the ladder to a HC position. There are also some other coaches on the staff already that will be great choices as well. I picked Tony because he is a good friend of mine and I want him to get that chance. Tell me what you guys think.

I can almost guarantee you that the new DC will not come from the existing staff. Hal is going to get the best DC available. He is going to want someone with previous DC experience. Also, the DC will have to have significant DC experience against the spread which leaves out most South Texas defensive coaches. Expect some new blood from North Texas in the DC position.

Tony Holmes is a good guy and full of energy. I like him as a coach but he has only been at SLC 1 year and I don't think is quite ready for the DC slot. He will get his chance someday but probably not this early.

Are you really going to say that South Texas coaches don't see the spread. There are many and I repeat many teams in South Texas that run a offense similar to SLC. Some SLC fans really do ride on a white high horse. You live in an area that has quality athletes, the difference is the number of quality athletes than in South Texas. But, as far as X's and O's it is all the same. If you have defended one spread offense, then you have defended them all. Tony is very qualified for the position. I just don't know if he will get the chance. Him being at SLC for one year is a bonus. That means he is one step ahead of any coach that is hired from another school. If you can coach and get kids to believe in a system as they have had in the past with coach Mendoza. I am biased so I will fight for T-Holmes. Yes, Coach Wasson will find a great coach to fill the shoes. I just want to fight for my boy.

What I am saying is that not as many South Texas teams run the spread so their DCs don't see it as much as SLC does. Virtually every team that SLC sees in the regular season runs a spread formation so it's important for the DC to have experience against the spread. As far as Tony, I know nothing about him so I can't address whether he's a good candidate or not. However, knowing Hal Wasson like I do, I believe he will get the best DC available and I think that the person chosen will have many "skins on the wall". I don't think that anyone on the current staff meets that description at the current time . I personally think that DD is on to something by thinking the next DC could be someone very close to Hal.

If you have defended one spread offense, then you have defended them all.
are you sure about that? since no one has a true verifiable definition of what a "spread" offense is, and since every true "spread" offense can morph at will, how can you possibly believe that? and saying that defending one is as good as defending them all, considering the generally benevolent nature of these defenses, at least towards slc's version, is not saying a heck of a lot.
i honestly can't say much about your boy, but i liked the db performance this year and i liked the way he approached the kids in practice. a couple of more years and he'll be a dc, if he wants it. he's on a springboard as we speak.

Well if he's having Thanksgiving dinner and enviting people over you guys are in trouble. He should be working at the coaches office for the next playoff game. Every defense is just as capable as offense to morph as you said it dragonsdaddy. Did you watch the Cedar Hill vs Cy Falls. Cy Falls had a great game plan, but could not tackle anyone with those two safeties. They were not very good tacklers. Cole made both of those kids just stop in their tracks, as he did lots of opponents. Like I said there are only so many things you can do out of the spread offense. There are only so many running plays you can run. Sometime it's the Johnny's and the Joe's not the X's and the O's. There are no real secrets in coaching football and SLC offense is no real secret.

while in essence you are correct, the spread offenses put a premium on be in position to make the play, and less on athletic ability. the old wing-t and i formations put lots of humanity within arms length and allow a superman or 2 to take over the los. recognition of what a spread can do and helping your kids combat it's lethality is what separates great dc's from the not so greats. that and getting the better athletes in the draft.

Well I disagree strongly with you. You may have the best game plan in the world to stop what teams are doing out of the spread. If the kids do not believe in it, you are beat on Monday. That is why getting DC who can simplify it and get the kids to believe in it and grow in it is so important. I think THolmes could continue the growth of those kids that coach Mendoza has already established. Bringing in a new system and a new coach may be difficult. You said it best about coach Wasson why would you change your mind with the DC position. Especially in that area where there are so many teams with lots of good athletes can tear you up with one missed assignment. The job Coach Holmes did this year is what he has done every year. The three years he was DC in Austin, he took a very poor team that had not won very many games and made the playoffs with them. That is impressive. Because he made loosers into winners and that is hard to do my friend. It is a little easier when you are handed good athletes and there is expectations to win. But, I respect where you are coming from dragonsdaddy.

like i said, i can't say good or bad about coach h. but getting the kids to buy into either mendoza's or stalcup's schemes has never been asn issue. i'm sure coach w will pick a dc who can bring the same dedication into the mix. i know one thing for sure, this year's spring training should be fun to watch as the kids will be establishing a pecking order for a new hc, and thus will be holding nothing back.

I would assume the intensity would be kicked up another notch by everyone. Starting w/Coach H. He may not admit it, but you know deep down he wants to prove any naysayers wrong..

Given that Coach Wasson is taking over such a winning and established program and that his neck is on the line, I'd expect like others have said that he will hire the best, most experienced DC he can find.

It couldn't have happened at Fossil Ridge with the Keller ISD nepotism policy but apparently there is no such policy in the Carroll ISD. He's been DC at Lewisville for years. He's got 2 State Championships to his credit and the defenses at Lewisville are always very good. It could happen.

I would also be curious to see if Coach Barlett(believe he is the OC at Richland) who was a former Carroll WR's coach comes back to SLC. He knew the offense real well before he left. He was going to go to FRidge with Wasson when he left but for some reason he would of had to take some sort of a test and either didnt want to or didnt pass it or something whatever that means he knows his football and was my favorite coach in middle school.
