Clear Lake's offense put numbers on the scoreboard and stat books that will be hard to ever top again with 63 points and nearly 700 yards of total offense. Baytown Lee answered with a spread offense orchestrated by Qb Jeremy Moses and a host of receivers that for one half showed why they won the 7 on 7 passing football state championship. But the Lake defense tightened in the 2nd half and Lake's offense continued to roll to turn a tight game into a comfortable lead in the fourth quarter (if there is such a thing after the Laporte game.)
Offense: A+
Despite a tough start on their first two drives with consecutive turnovers - Lake dominated the Lee defense with great o-line play, offensive execution, and tremendous speed by the backfield. Qb Jon Gilmer (18 rushes 99 yds, 3-6 passing 48 yds, 2 TDs) continues to improve each week with nearly flawless execution of the triple offense, Geno Blow (18 rushes 223 yds, 3 TDs WOW!!!) continues to dominate with power and speed, and running backs Joe Clark (7 rushes 147 yds, 1 TD) Ronnie Feaster (10 rushes 76 yds 1 TD) and TJ Brown (5 rushes, 35 yds 2 TDs) are consistently getting to the outside and picking up big pieces of real estate. Special props to Joe Clark, who is showing not only the speed necessary to play the running back position, but also is displays great vision by seeing the lanes to run through. The combination will prove hard to stop in future games. Also, when a team produces 678 yards of offense, a special mention must go out to the o-line. Paul, Snow, Voor, Fritz, and Birbaum dominated the Lee defense along with tightends Mitchell and Dixon. The passing game was used in the first half when the game was particularly tight and Lake used a combination of long and short passes to keep the defense off balance with Patrick Ashley (2 rec 26 yds) coming up with a couple of receptions for first downs to keep the drives moving.
Defense: B-
Despite a tough first half giving up two long passes and a long qb scramble on fourth down, the defense came back in the 2nd half and shutdown an impressive Lee offense. The Lake defense was able to hold the Lee offense to 1 td in the second half by consistently putting pressure on the Lee Qb. Blake Sledge, Josh McNary, Chad Brandon, and Kadeem Benard kept Qb Moses off balance and running for his life in the 2nd half. Jeremy McKinney continued to dominate at linebacker and the Db's played solidly (particularly in the 2nd half.) Special props to sophomore free safety Michael Grant, who had to step up for the injured Andre Blow. It was hard to believe that he is only a sophomore with his play last night - he has speed, great instincts, and tackles well - he will be a special player for Lake over the next 3 years.
Special Teams: C
Still needs to improve. The good news - it is improving every week. The kick off team gave up a Td return and numerous other big returns, but improved as the game went on. Kicker Kenny Tabota looks to have established himself as the kicker for FG, PATs, and kickoffs. The return team has yet to create a TD themselves and also was fooled by a successful onside kick by Lee - can't happen in the games coming up on the schedule. Punt team - didn't get a chance to redeem their selves since a punt was not needed all night.
Coaching: A
The offensive coaching by Lanier is solid, if not spectacular. Execution by the offense was nearly flawless and the play calling kept Baytown off balance all night. Defensive coaches made the adjustments at halftime and deserve a lot of credit for the second half turnaround. Special teams are improving and should be ready by Pearland.
Great job Lake and continue to believe in your coaches and yourselves.
PS - LaPorte put on an offensive show against Aldine - looks like a lot of defenses will have trouble with that offense.
