ESPN Classics will be running his greatest fights and his life story all day today. He was not only a great athelete, the man was a genius. He knew that every time he opened his mouth he sold more tickets...brilliant. Everyone should watch ESPN's Ali Rap to hear some of the great things he said about other fighters....

Hey Wide, do you know the story behind that famous top picture?

Hey Wide, do you know the story behind that famous top picture?

My Dad has told me about it a couple of times. He says that a lot folks believed the fight was fixed because Liston went down way too fast. That story? Or a story about the picture itself?

The picture itself.

Ali and Frazier had the best fights...ever!

:D

It's a shame the HWT division sucks now. The heavyweights during this era were not too tall or big. They had speed, power and stamina.

Happy birthday, Mr. Ali.

The picture itself.

I've probably heard it at some point and lost it in the cobwebs or deleted it from the mental hard drive at some point.

What the story behind it?

The guy who took the photo was simply lucky he tripped the shutter when he did, and more importantly, Ali was too.

I saw a special that had an interview with the photographer.

The story is that if you look at the film of when the photo was taken, his positioning was only for a split second and he wasn't trying to look like he was taunting the guy. It was pure luck that the shot turned out the way it did.

Of course the press ran with the photo as Ali was taunting the fallen fighter, and it set in stone the polarizing figure that made him famous. It made us love him or hate him. It was the most singular thing in his career, off the canvas, that made him famous....and it was just pure chance.
