My kids have to go at 10:30 tomorrow. What the hell is the point of that?
They get out at 3pm...and they have PE for 45 minutes. That's not even 4 hours of actual school.

I have to say that Texas' penchant for closing schools in the face of a mild frost is ludicrous in the extreme. Texas A&M shuts down tomorrow, too. I wonder how folks at the University of Anchorage ever get to go to school.

for Wide's question- they'll take attendance at 11 am and get full credit for the kids that are there that day.

as for Firebird and Anchorage, I am struggling myself withhow I deal with my drivers down here(Conroe-Huntsville area VS Lubbock and Amarillo where they are better equipped and more climatized(not skilled:eek: ) drivers for the conditions. These are the same folks who called me a few weeks ago when the wind was gusting to 35 MPH and asked if their trucks would tip over...( the Lubbock boy in my just LMAO. Add to the fact that it will probably be sheer ice in the AM, and I don't car who is driving, it's slicker than snot on a frozen doorknob...

UNT is open tommorow. During dead week last fall we had similar weather. TCU, SMU and UTDallas were all closed. We were not. I guess we're just better than everyone else in this state :D

When I was out in Abilene, the school closed for weather for the 1st time since the 1930's.

In Russia, schools stay open until the cold gets to the point that central heating systems start failing. This is usually around -25 or so. We Texans are so spoiled.

in california, they cancelled recess and any after school activities when the weather got above 85 degrees.

Well but Texas is a completely different place than Russia. I'm going to be 100% honest and i'm going to say that if the city didn't shut down when the roads had a chance of icing over there would be thousands of fatalities because we just don't know how to drive in those conditions. People drive through many feet of snow up north, but down here if someone spits on the road we play destruction derby on the highway. We aren't spoiled, we are just bad drivers in bad conditions. Hate to be that honest but that's what's true and i'm not going to lie.

Um....if you think Alaska and Texas are one in the same, you're dumber than I thought.

In Texas, if it's not 100 degrees when full pads go on, we get chilled!

Katy ISD is waiting until morning to decide too. All the big school districts in the Houston area are waiting, it seems.

I've driven in ice only a handful of times, and I think they were all when I lived in Waco. When it's been icy here, I stayed in. I did drive in snow in Houston a couple of times, but that was years ago and my dad was in the hospital, so I had to.

I know exactly what your talking about. In hockey, we sometimes have outdoor practices, and on a normal game or practice (indoors) i'll lose about 3 lbs of water. yeah outside in full pads as a goalie, i lose roughly 6 to 8 lbs. not fun.

Who said anything about one and the same....it's just stupid. It's stupid that people can't learn to drive, and the whining about the cold is stupid too.

You can be the best driver there ever was and still lose control with black ice.

I think it's pretty dumb of you to stay things like this.

he's talking about "How Cold" it is... hehe

it was 35 here today. I go in an HEB, and I swear this lady comes walking in with 2 kids that look like they're dressed for the Iditarod. i have a sweatshirt on and jeans with regular Nike's on... She goes, " aren't you cold?" i just said, " It's not even freezing yet..." she just stood there with this look on her face:eek: .

I guess we got used to the cold( and wind chill) living in Lubbock and the Amarillo. They aren't as cold as Alaska, but it gets in the teens and single digits, and that's plenty cold. Anyway, when we moved to Louisiana, one December afternoon, my son's( the one in the avatar) teacher took my wife to the side. She asked if everything was OK at home, and my wife said, " well certainly." the teacher went on to say some of the other staff had agreed to go in together and buy our kids coats.
My wife just starts laughing, and the teacher is pretty scared of how sick of parents we must be. My wife says, " where we used to live, 53 isn't cold. The boys have jackets , and they'll wear them when winter gets here."

I guess "cold" is relative, but I understand exactly where Firebird is coming from on this one. I have been laughing at the reaction to 30 degree weather.
My dilemma is that I must share the road with these crazies in the morning:eek:

Probably make them up in San antonio area schools on Feb. 19, President's Day, and in April on Fiesta Parade Day. Small chance because of the number of school districts across that state that had to cancel classes that TEA may exempt those two days altogether-----but don't hold your breath when talking about TEA and anything in Austin.

Nope, not Battle of Flowers....the NEISD spokesman made that clear.

I haveta say....I have little to not respect for the leaders of our district but at least they were able to get this a little right!

one of my cousins in north dakota is in fourth grade, and he has never had a "severe weather day". oh, and it was -17 degrees there on monday with a wind chill of almost 30 below.

and as for North East ISD, i have heard that we might make these days up on the four-day weekend we are supposed to have at the end of february.

People in Anchorage know how to handle the conditions. People in Texas do not. Have you not seen these people drive on ice around here?
