I was searching through youtube and found some HS football footage out of the Rio Grande Valley... I thought this was interesting considering no one outside the RGV gets to see these kids play... so heres a video I found of a Running Back out of Weslaco High School...Mishak Rivas...

Also, does it not seem like he should have more than 1234 yards in the season based on these highlights?

Seeing as how it says that this was his sophomore year, I would bet that he came up from JV about half way through the varsity schedule. Thats why i would think he only had 1200 yards. Not only that, but sometimes it can be deceptive to see a skill player from the valley because the competition is nowhere near as high as it would be elsewhere. Not saying the kid isnt good because he obviously has talent, but lets not start some sort of commotion about a RGV miracle child or anything. Also...his stats for this year are 1140 yards as of 10/25, looking at his team's offense they seem to spread the ball around which probably contributes to his lack of eye popping stats. We'll see if he turns out to be anything more than a blip on the radar. (he is just a junior this year so maybe next year?)

Agreed. The valley teams can be deceptive. One of the best teams in recent years out of the valley was San Benito IMO. They were on a 12-0 run when they met SV in the playoffs. The stats on these players were freaking amazing. Honestly, I was a little worried for SV prior to the game. Stat wise, SV was nowhere near them. The results?? I think they had 1 first down, crossed midfield once, and scored 0 points even against 2nd/3rd team & JV kids from SV. This is why I do not look too far into things like this, & also why we have not heard about this kid. The stats from some of the kids on the San Benito team were WAY up there, and when they left the Alamodome, those stats acually dropped some.

This was more for the people who dont get to see RGV football... yea we know the teams down there arent usually up to par... but who other than Region 4 gets to see valley football....??... no one does... I was just taking the opputunity to post a good video from the valley other than Bradley Stephens... just trying to get the RGV some pub... I knew I would get responses like RGV is weak... blah blah blah... thats all they got just tryin to help out a little bit...

Perfectly fine by me. Just want to put some perspective to the question on why do we not hear about these teams. Someone asked. One of these days maybe one of these teams will compete. Its a shame that these kids that stand out do not get much publicity, I know some very good athletes that are now at dII schools from the RGV. I am sure if their team would have been better, they would have had some better offeres. I was not ragging on these teams/players, just pointing out the reason we do not hear of the superstars from the schools.

Who the heck is he playing? They cannot tackle at all. He looks like an average player
Mishak Rivas has gotten looks from some D1 schools...def. has the speed, vision and all the tools a RB needs..but his size lacks..he is stronger than he looks and because he is so quick hard to tackle....Weslaco just started to win so thats why you havent heard much about him...this upcoming season you should hear more about him...his bro was just as good and also looked at by some D1 schools..he is also a track star...

san benito went into that game missing around 6 starters. then by the end of the game lost i think 2 more. that team was bruised and battle tested. they were INSANE during the season, and while wouldnt have beat SV could have made it an interesting game.
mishak has some uncanny vision. he knows what will open up before he makes his 1st step. he's no bradley stevens, but hes got talent.
and yes i know zippy and jakerz are both anti-rgv, its fine.

San Benito was on their 3rd string QB for that game. Their 1st string QB and 2000+ yd rusher and 1000+ passer went down during one of the playoff games. The 2nd string QB went down during the next game. How about the game between McAllen Memorial and San Antonio McArthur. 1 pt win by McArthur on a missed extra point at the end of the game by Memorial. Ask McArthur if valley teams can compete against teams from up North. This team was 1 pt from making something magical happen in the RGV.
Stephens 245 yds rushing showed the state of Texas that he was the real deal during this game.
As more valley players begin to believe in themselves and stop listening to this type of crap then they will also be able to compete and win. McAllen Memorial also won earlier in the season at the Dave Campbell Classic in the Alamo Dome against Victoria Memorial before the internal breakdown of the Victoria team.

The valley has two current RB's who placed in the state track meet this year.
Mishak Rivas (JR.) - 47.8 sec in the 400M (3rd at 5A State meet)
Alex Trevino (Soph) - 21.4 200M (3rd at 4A State meet)
Certainly you can,t say the valley does not have the speed.
Great athletes deserve recognition regardless of where they live. Adrian Peterson did not play against a powerhouse level in high school either.

lets not try to overthrow the current concensus thought of the valley being full of dumb, slow, undersized mexicans..........some peoples heads might explode ;)
yea, i jus wanna say that during the SV SB game the only pass the QB completed was with his GF/cheerleader........right to the back of th head. i wish i could youtube it

not taking away from this kid, but i wonder how he would do against a faster defense. he ran alot of sweeps to the outside, but teams with quicker linebackers and defensive ends who set the edge will close the gaps for him to run up as hes moving into the flat.

Most likely like any other very good RB he would cut it up North and South. This kids speed translates on any team. As you can see in my earlier post he placed 3rd in the State track meet. He also went to state last year in the long jump with a jump over 23' ft.

This kid has the speed and vision for a DI scholarship.
A Major DI, who knows.
Definitely Baylor, UTEP, Iowa State, etc.
RB, maybe not. Split End, KR and PR oh yeah.
1000 yards in the RGV is not a big deal.
2000 yards in the RGV IS.
2000 yards passing in the RGV, not a big deal
3000 yards passing in the RGV IS.
I've posted some links on PAC-10 boards and Big XII boards and 90% have good things to say about him.
Just because the rest of the state hasn't 'heard' about him doesn't mean diddly-squat.

First of all, that's a well done set of highlight reels.
This kid would succeed at any school, so let's not diminish anything he's done by talking about strength of comp or slow defenses. Did he exploit some of those things? No doubt about it but if you'll pay attention to him when he has the ball in his hands, all that fades to black. Great balance, quick feet, tougher than you'd think and, oh yeah, acceleration. He's got the great kind of football speed, getting through the gears in a hurry and at close to top speed in no time. It's all about the burst into your sprint on the gridiron and he's got that covered. Put that kid behind a Trinity or Katy line and what do you think is going to happen. Run him out of Carroll's spread, wow! Increased production his junior year means the bigger role didn't phase him, that speaks well to his endurance. Should be in for a brilliant senior year. Best of luck to him:D

He didn't really carry the ball a lot his soph. year. He played on Varsity his freshman year, around mid-season. He played RB, WR, and KR-PR. In fact, his first play from scrimmage, he scored a touchdown. The announcers were also talking about how he, in 8th grade, just tore up opposing teams all by himself.
I would also like to see him play a Florida, California, or Ohio team. I'm telling you, if he played in those states, he'd be a lot more widely reconigized player, because Texas football is by far the toughest place to play football. Weslaco playes Lakeland, North Fort Myers, Colerain, and he does well, he'll get a lot more credit.

dude, that would be great, but for the valley its a 5 hour drive jus to san antonio, thats why we are viewed as the waste management plan of texas. its bad enough tryin to schedule new teams down here. but to say from another state......thats minumum 12 hours transit jus to play LOU, or NM. meating half way, MAYBE.
but until the king ranch is subsidized it will stay this way.

Are you driving in a 1985 Astro van at 35 in the fast lane with a turn signal on? It never takes me more than 3.5, and I don't speed.
I guess if we are talking about yellow dogs, 5 hours might be right.

shhhhhhhhhhhhhhh! we are slow, we are undersized, we have no skills, and noone ever leaves the valley. thats the way it is and will always be :puke :puke
for my valley members... ever think it was the coaching? most HC's in the valley are either recycled from other schools, or were assistants of valley coaches trying to make it.
coach ford at los fresnos is doing great things with that program, the coach at MacMem is gettin that program going again. isnt it time that the valley looks for upstate coaches and get rid of this loosing strategy?

In watching those clips, it's apparent Shak has some ridiculous open field awareness. The competition isn't great by any means. In some of those clips I wondered if there was even a defense on the field.
However, he's definitely got ability. The start-stop talent is amazing. I think he could do something for just about any team in that state that runs a spread oriented offense. Weslaco runs a Wing T with some spread sprinkled in going off of those clips.
He looks like a wisp of smoke running downfield.
That's why I'm saying Weslaco should play a top tier 4A team with a great defense, like Denton Ryan, Waco, or a soild 5A team, like a Judson or Permian, Hebron, maybe even S.A Mac, with a solid defense.

i agree with you in that if mishak had a complete team around him they would turn heads, but the thing is that he is the diamond in th rough.
if he were on a team like LF or SV he would not be getting this talk about not being tested.
and on those videos it doesnt really show him playing a solid defense, even for valley standards.

if they do that and Mishak cant get his yards...all that says is that his TEAM is not as good as one of those top teams you mentioned....It still doesnt take away the fact that this kids is a solid high 4.4 or low 4.5 40 yards dasher...doesnt take away his vision and moves he is stronger than he looks as well..not afraid to run people over and he has......the kids got skills...a lil short but he can defenitly be effective if you put him behind a team like any of the ones you mentioned above...more than likely he will go DI in track thats what he wants to do...

Great year for Mishak and the Panthers. Shak had about 3300 yds and 40+ all purpose touchdowns. Panthers led the state in scoring (45.4 according to this site), and broke many offensive valley records. Not too shabby a senior year for these boys.
