dmn confirms the rumor that c daniel will start season as b smith's backup. since they are playing a directional school this week, he will get some pt. surprising they would give up the redshirt season, but it certainly says something about chase. congrats.

DD -- He could still get a medical exemption down the road if something happens -- ala Jason White.

Honestly, I think Brad Smith stunk it up last year - after a good soph. season. If he does it again - look for Chase to get some quality pt.

i've been wondering if there's a shift in coaching philosophies regarding rs'ing. with the plethora of kids leaving early for the pros, i wonder if coaches assume that any kid good enough to possibly get drafted probably won't stay for a fifth year, and possibly not even a fourth. therefore, might as well get as much as you can out of them. stockpiling kids isn't an option as they'll transfer in a heartbeat if they see some greener grass.

A good comparison is Vince Young and Reggie McNeal. Vince redshirted, Reggie didn't and Reggie is a senior this year. If he had had a great junior year (instead of just really good) and had been a factor in the Heisman, he might have come out.

If VY goes undefeated or loses only to USC and is in the top 3 in the Heisman - I say he comes out - so, it was kinda pointless to redshirt him.

To me, redshirting is fine for a kid that likely has no pro aspirations, thus, one more year of free college - but, for a stud like Chase - makes less sense for reasons DD mentioned I suppose.

Agreed on the transferring - Stephen F. Austin has like 17 transferees this year - from Notre Dame to UT -- they could make a huge impact immediately.

Mack Brown has a knack for keeping his players around though. He might have a bigger challenge with Vince, but there is something there that makes guys stay.

Mack Brown got DJ and Cedric to stay. Granted they werent redshirted, but they could have left.

You're right. Mack is good at getting his players to stay, but if Vince has a good year, he should leave. The purpose of college is to get a career and after this season, the NFL will be calling.
