Looks like the KT Boys are happy. Their team is winning! The TSRN broadcast quality is very poor so I could not make out the score for sure but it sounded like they said Katy 16(that is the part I am not sure of) and The Woodlands 0.

All of is in Katy knew this was going to be a very good group of Tigers, whoever thought that Will Thompson would not be on Drabek doesn't know Coach Joseph like we do. A great win for a team that is notorious for slow starts. Katy dominated The Woods in sub varsity as well.

Yes we knew it and yes we know it. 1 W down and 15 to go.
Overall, this was classic Katy football.. Keep it close at halftime, make the right adjustments and pull away in the second half. The defense looked awesome. I was hoping for a shut-out but Drabek made a good catch and a good run sideline to sideline for the TD. He's a great athlete.
Our QB ( Andy Dalton) was very composed in the pocket and his maturity in the first game of the year is very impressive, especially considering the play-off type atmosphere.
The passing game was very good, the running game adequate, the secondary was exceptional. The Tigers made some mental mistakes, but that's to be expected in the first game. Trust me they will hear about them and we will see far fewer.
The Woodlands has some work to do, but I am sure they will rebound as they are a top notch program with quality fans.

I'm sure they will rebound from this lose it just sucks that they have to turn right around and play North Shore Saturday. I'm sure they would have much prefered to go into that game with a win over Katy under them instead of being 0-1. I guess as a North Shore fans this tells us it could be another big win. Though again I know they will be ready for us after back to back loses.

I am not surprised at all. The Woodlands lost most of their team last year and Katy is Katy!! I love their style. Hard hitting football on both sides!! I love how they pound you with the run. I figured they would win by 14 plus points. So much for the slow starting Katy Tigers. It depends who you play early that decides if you are a slow starting team or not. ;)

Katy's defense made all the difference by playing very well the entire game. Most of Katy's scoring was in the 4th quarter. The final score says domination but the game was close until the 4th. It was tied 6-6 at half. I only got comfortable half way through the 4th.
There was typical first game mistakes by both team's offenses. I'm curious to what the Highlander fans think. Ultimately, I think they need to forget about this game because they will have their hands full next week with North Shore. NS has a heckuva defensive line. That's going to be a fun game to watch.
Andy Dalton looked great at QB and receivers were getting open and catching the ball (unlike last year). The line did an excellent job protecting the passer. An unusual offensive game for Katy, with almost 100 more passing yards than rushing. The Tiger defense had kept pressure on the QB all game with the DBs smothering the Woodlands receivers (a known strength). Katy had a very good second half against a strong team. A great start!

Exactly what you get from North Shore. Just ask dada4w and KT they were both in the stands last night and I know KT has watched a many a North Shore games. And as Carl says Shore is not only big on defense but their fast as well. As i said above I don't doubt the Highlanders will put this one behind them and focus in on us. I really feel though if we can contain Drabek and their other recievers and make them run the ball as we did last year and in the 03 championship game we'll walk away with another victory over them.

Hey, everyone, look at your schedules, NS next oppenent is NOT Woodlands, it's Alief Hastings on Sept. 2 7:00pm @ GPISD stadium. Let's not get ahead of ourselves. THWS is a well coached school. They can't change the results of past games, so they won't focus on the score from the Katy game. They will learn from their mistakes, make corrections, and be better prepared for their next oppenent. Let's take this season one game at a time. See you all there for the NS vs. Hastings game.

You got a point there mustangbacker we shouldn't be over looking Hastings. While they aren't near the team they were back when we first started this series or what ever you want to call it. They still manage to do just like Elsik and hang with us a for a quarter or a half before we put the pedal to the metal and run off and leave them in the dust.

I don't know how good your Panthers are currently but I would pay to see a Lufkin/NS matchup right now. That game might turn out to be a defensive battle. I'm going to make an effort to see you guys when you travel down here to play Klein. So far this is Katy's best start since '99. Their defense looks solid and the offense is farther ahead than what I'm used to seeing this early in the season.
mstangbacker: Hastings usually has a better defensive backfield than Elsik. I have'nt seen them yet but they are also usually bigger than Elsik. I thought the Elsik team looked small with not many if any standout players. Their punting team was atrocious!! How many big plays were there made on Elsiks punting team?

The Woodz Qbs did look bad, but I think most of that can be attributed to the Oline. No time to throw and under constant pressure. Katy looked great on D, but I think
part of that can be attributed to a below average Offensive line. I am not taking anything away from Katy, just saying the Woodz is maybe overrated this year.
Katy will make thier normal run deep into the playoffs, and the Woodz will struggle to make it out of district.
Duke, I heard a lot of people at the game talking about the Quarterbacks, but don't you think that Katy dominated the line of scrimmage. Remember except for about three plays, the running game looked as bad as the passing game.

You're right. Andre was just a half step from breaking a couple of long runs. The defense always managed to get a hand on him and trip him up. He needs to cut to the outside a little quicker and I'm sure the films will show that.

Duke, sucks to hear that The Woodlands may be having a down year this year, one year before the new Woodlands school opens. If you guys need help at the corner, you could be in for a long game @ Abe. But it is early, and there is plenty of time to fix the mistakes. Who played at quarterback yesterday?

you're right Duke, the woods qb's were horrible. the woods listed five wr's at 6'1". had trouble finding any of them. katy's db's are not that tall, maybe one is 6' or a little taller. katy looked very good for their first outing, not the recent norm for them. certainly a great game from the katy perspective!!

definitely going to be a huge problem for the Woodlands if the CB and QB spots are in question when they play Lufkin......the "big 4" Lufkin receivers will have a field day, as well as the Panther defense swarming in and putting a crap load of pressure on the 2 QB's-----going to be a long night.......hopefully, the coaching staff can make some type of adjustment before the meeting at Abe....just don't know if that's enough time???

The Woodlands' main problem in the secondary was trying to play man coverage the entire game. The game plan was obviously to sell out against the Katy run, and that part worked pretty well. However, it was clear The Woodlands didn't know how big of a threat Katy would be through the air. Obviously, that would be hard for them to tell for the first game of the year and you can't really go by 7 on 7.
Given The Woodlands defensive gameplan, the passing game had a chance to be very successful as long as Katy's QB Andy Dalton was hitting his marks and the receivers ran good routes/caught passes. That's what makes defending a balanced offense very tricky. If you drop back a little to help against the pass then the ground game opens up. If you sell out against the run, then you will be prone to give up big chunks of yards versus the pass.

08-28-2005, 06:57 PM
Offensively I wished Katy’s ground game could have given a little more production, but as KT said the Woodlands put everything into stopping the run so I guess it is understandable. What I did like about it was the fact that Katy took what the Woodlands gave them and used it. I’m amazed that the passing game looked this good this early on. Good sign of the things to come for the Tiger offense. On defense it went pretty much the way I thought it would. I guessed that coach Joseph would put Thompson on Drabek to shut him down and that happened. I also said that Katy’s defensive front would put enough pressure on the Woodlands QB to not give him anytime to throw. I would say that the only thing Katy didn’t defend that well was the QB draw and that should be an easy correction. If Katy can make the normal steady improvements that they usually do over the season then this team will be very tough come playoff time.

KT 2000 you may have been on the team in 2000 at Katy but do not discuss the concept of man coverage versus zone because it is obvious the Woodlands plays a quarters coverage and one of the touchdowns was versus cover 2. So stick to website stuff, and do not speculate coverage. Katy had a better QB, who made plays.
KT2000
08-29-2005, 10:34 AM
Jackie, not sure why all the hostility but if you watched the same game I did you would have seen The Woods walk up their strong safety on just about every play for added run support. That doesn't happen in quarters coverage. They were covering the Katy receivers with basically the two corners and free safety for the majority of the game. The corners tried to press but weren't very successful in hampering the Tiger WRs' releases or covering effectively downfield. They did play some zone in obvious passing situations, but the huge majority of their plan on defense centered around loading up against the run. Katy had the deep ball open the entire afternoon because of that and was able to hit it in the second half with The Woodlands continuing to stack most of their effort against the ground game.

TWHS did concentrate too much on the run but did a very good job of shoelacing the running backs for Katy, #30 Andre Dean, and #32 Brandon King. They had a combined 102 yards rushing on 30+ attempts. Something Katy has not relied on so much is the pass offense. Dalton was 15-20 and 1 completion to the wrong team, which equaled him out to have 4 passing TD's to 2 different recievers and the tight end, and 1 interception. Jr. reciever Michael Fuda had 5 receptions and 122 yards with 2 td's. TWHS did hold the game close for 2 quarters and let it slowly slip in the 3rd to 10 points then a 17 point 4th quarter made the score look how it did. Drabek is a good reciever but a good reciever can't do much without a QB to go along with it. The one pass the QB even got around him that wasn't intercepted was high, but with the 6'1 reciever having a great vertical to go along with it he made the catch and broke quite a few arm tackles to get the TD. TWHS running back was having a little troubles every now and then when he went up the middle, but when he got to the races, unless you have a great angle on him you won't catch him. First games for Katy are usually not like that, but I don't doubt the Woods are just like most teams, slow starters. Yeah, there was conflict with pushing and all that, but welcome to football. After that hit that Will Thompson put on Drabek he was a little mad and yes he did push some people but that can be accepted, its the next 5 times when they KEPT doing it that really made people think. Overall good game by both teams, the Woods held close all the way until the 4th so I'm not going to judge them by this one game for the whole season but they better forget about it before they play any more games.

Well I ain't going to say much about the Eagles except the defense played extremely hard and has sufficient talent to make the playoffs. A&M Cons is a fine team defensively but is too one dimensional on offense to make it far in the playoffs.
As for The Woodlands qb's being terrible.........well I think it was more Katy's defense putting constant and enormous pressure on the qb. The Woodlands should have run the qb draw much more often and rolled the guy out some because the heat from the fire breathing Tigers was...............well unbelievable. And yes Katy went to the air but the running game was not to be taken lightly......#32 and #30 looked as talented of a pair of backs as I have seen..........The Woodlands defensive line is very talented themselves and has the ability to shut down any running game.
Barring injuries Katy will be a beast to contend with in late Nov/Dec.
ftballin11
08-29-2005, 11:47 AM
Injuries for Katy will be questionable, with the D-line suffering many injuries last year. Let's hope not just for the wins, but for the players that no injuries occur. I'm not sure if anyone else really thought about this, but did anyone realize how on special teams Katy normally held them within the 20 on kickoffs. Sophomore Trent Hunter #4 did an amazing job of getting downfield and doing his job as a headhunter. For how good the recievers did im kind of suprised with this being Sam Justus first year on varsity football since he just joined the Katy program last offseason, and Michael Fuda being a Jr. who never played varsity with the acception of a few reps in the playoffs, but no catches. Next time you watch Katy look for #4 on the kickoff, it is just amazing to me how fast he gets down there and is always the first person to make contact and doesn't let loose of the returner. :)

08-29-2005, 12:33 PM
I didn't think The Woodlands called many designed QB runs the entire game. Hutson is definitely the more mobile QB, and whenever he ran it was mostly because serious heat was headed his direction off the edge or up the middle via dline penetration. Hutson was able to salvage some lost yardage that way, but most of his scrambling was forced. I think that's what most defenses want from a non-option QB as long as it is contained. I'd take my chances with Hutson in the open field rather than Burns/Smalls/Drabek/Grote any day of the week as a defense.

08-29-2005, 12:52 PM
I think your OL will be working on blitz pick-up and quickness drills a lot this week and next in preparations for North Shore. Katy's OLBs came untouched off the edge way too often. Speed obviously had something to do with that, but the Woods was overwhelmed more times than not at the point of attack in my opinion.
I talked about the difference in experience in the trenches pre-game, and my point is that it was very clear to me The Woods has an inexperienced OL that obviously needs time to come together. I believe you had to replace 4 starters from last year with Meyer being the only returner. I may be wrong on that.
No QB is going to look good with constant pressure getting to them play after play, and it's on the OL and RB (if not in a route) to pick up that pressure.

I pretty much agree with KT2000.s assessment of the game, however I thought the first few sacks were coverage sacks. The QB seemed to have enough time but no one open. I do think both WHS QBs have arm strength issues. That was pretty obvious in warm ups. I think Katy's running game will be better than it showed. Woods D line, in my opinion looked preety good. Real good size and mobility. I think the Katy running backs will look much stronger against lesser competition than the Woodlands.
Duke...maybe a bit harsh...yes. I was too after the Lufkin game in 2003 and look what happened!
This game was close until we picked up the passing pace. Dalton was unbelievably accurate on several passes and TWHS defense failed to adjust. I wouldn't be surprised if no one defends the run any better all year.
I think your team will be in the thick of things right through the playoffs. I'll certainly be following and cheering for ya!
