Stats can be telling, but its' the supporting cast that is more telling...
Tiki Barber has Eli Manning and a solid Offensive unit that rarely misses blocking assignments. Defenses key Manning's ability to get into a groove, thus open up the running game, tremendously. Tiki utilizes the cutback more than any other RB in the NFL, which accompanied by his speed and vision allows him to break a designed 3-4 yd pickup, into a 10-20 yd explosion. It's unfortunate that as of today, he has yet to score a td.
560 yds of total production and no tds
QB = A-
O-line = B+
LaDainian Tomlinson has a young QB, in Phillip Rivers. Most veteran defenses aren't showing too much respect to a proven-less Rivers, so they stack the box, in an effort to force Rivers to win the games. And yet LT continues to pile up the yardage and, most importantly, the tds. His O-line is prone to give up some penetration, which LT can equalize with his vision and agility...then his speed kicks in to "awe" you.
Has 700 yds of total production and 8 tds
QB = B+
O-line = B-
Larry Johnson has Trent Green (most of the time) and what I like to think of as perhaps one of the best O-lines in the League. (Brian Waters is a monster....and a close personal friend.) Johnson's a run-between-the-tackle-type of player, that rarely will juke you out in the open field. With Trent out, KC has had to rely mainly on Johnson, even though Damon is no QB to scoff at. He's putting up enough production to keep KC winning.
Has 800 yds of total production and 6 tds
QB = B
O-line = B+
Steven Jackson has Mark Bulger - a solid QB - and with the exception of Timmerman and Steussie, of whom are both my senior, an O-line that playing above average. He's a bruiser back, that has replaced the great Faulk...and is doing an exceptional job. He can catch out of the backfield, too.
Has 750 yds of total production and 2 tds
QB = B+
O-line = B
Shaun Alexander has Matt Hasselbeck and probably one of the best O-lines (if not the best) in the League. He's a run-it-like-it's-drawn-up type rb. Rarely does he stray off course fo the designed play, which is good. He doesn't take too much punishment, either. His vision and ability to play big - in BIG games - is very telling.
Has 200 yds of total production and 2 tds
QB = A
O-line = A-
Warrick Dunn has Michael Vick and an average - at best - O-line.(injuries/suspensions) There's not much focus on him, but that is equalized with the poor blocking. Dunn is a cutback type runner, who can make you miss in the open field, and hide behind his o-line...then explode to paydirt.
Obviously, it helps that he has the most electrifying QB in the League.
Has 600 yds of total production and 2 tds
QB = B+
O-line = C+
Edgerrin James has a rookie QB - in Leinart - and one of the worst O-lines, yet he has 600 yds of total production and 2 tds. He's a RB that clearly benefited from playing with Peyton, in that the offense was truly balanced. He setup the pass and Peyton setup the run. A lethal combination. That said, he still has explosion and a tough mentality. He's got some power, accompanied with his 220 lb frame.
Has 600 yards of total production and 2 tds
QB = B
O-line = C-
Willis McGahee has nothing. Plain and simple. Yet he has accounted for 700 yds of offensive production and 3 tds. He runs down hill and can go through, over and around you, if he needs to. If he had any help, what-so-ever, he'd have nearly 1,000 yds of production and 6-8 tds.
Has 700 yds of total production and 3 tds
QB = C-
O-line = C-
Brian Westbrook has Donovan McNabb and a gelled O-line. He's the total package. (minus height) Currently, he has 500 yds of rushing, with 4 tds and 340 yds receiving with 3 tds. He can make you miss in the open field, and loves the cutback just as much as any rb in the League.
Has 840 yds of total production and 7 tds
QB = A
O-lIne = B
If I had to rank them...
1) LaDainian Tomlinson
2) Brian Westbrook
3) Larry Johnson
4) Tiki Barber
5) Shaun Alexander
6) Willis McGahee
7) Warrick Dunn
8) Edgerrin James
9) Steve Jackson

Did somebody on this thread rank Brian Westbrook ahead of Tiki Barber and Larry Johnson?
Absolutely! This season, Brian Westbrook has 500yds/4 tds rushing and 340yds/3 tds recieving, while Tiki and Johnson, combined have 1200yds/6 tds. (Tiki with 0 and Johnson 6)
Brian is a dual-threat RB, in the mold of a smaller Faulk. He catches the ball, superbly, and can make people miss in the open field. Having the kind of line he has, in KC, helps Larry Johnsons' stats. IMO, LJ has a better O-line than both Barber and Westbrook...and less production, so far, this season.
Larry Johnson has 2885 total yds/27 tds in the last 22 games (469 attempts/ 58 receptions) (This year he avg's 3.7 yds per carry.)
Brian Westbrook has 3067 total yds/20 tds in the last 22 games (318 attempts/ 111 receptions) (This year he avg's 5.5 yds per carry.)
Tiki Barber has 3223 total yds/11 tds in the last 22 games (486 attempts/ 80 receptions) (This year, he avg's 5.0 yds per carry.)
You can make a case that all 3 rb's have been equally productive for their respective team....with Brian, clearly, having the better year, so far, statistically.

Brian Westbrook is a textbook case of "product of the system". You put Tiki or Larry Johnson or any number of RBs in that Philly offense and I would be willing to bet you they put up numbers equal to or better than Westbrook's. You put Westbrook in the Giants offense or the Chiefs offense, and he is another middle-of-the-road RB. Good... sure, but not among the best in the league IMO.

It's a different style, as the result of utilization and surroundings. Both Barber and Johnson have better O-lines and packaging. Westbrook has a cutback style - similiar to Barber - but is more proven with his hands. He's a smaller, but equally effective, rb because of his versatility. If Tiki or Johnson are in the Eagle's offense I believe they have to be relied upon as better receivers out of the backfield. They aren't utilized that way, currently, just as Brian doesn't receive near as many carries. (This year BW-84, LJ-133 and TB-129.) What would suggest that they would be just as successful, out of the backfield, as Brian is if they aren't being used that way, currently?
It depends on surroundings. Brian is definitely as productive as any other RB in the League.

The title question to this thread - "Is Tki Barber the best RB in the NFL?" - is relevant to the present. In other words, who is the best, right now...or as of recent. (Meaning this season.) Now, if were "Who has been the most consistant RB, over the last 5 yrs?" then I would definitely move Tiki's name up the list.
And while he's been putting up numbers on a consistant basis, LT, LJ and BW have had more overall production, in rush yds, rec yds and tds. (This season.)
I played against him many times. He's a great 'back, and greatly respected.
