Did anyone catch last night's show on Channel 8? They had a segment about a former NFL player and his son who plays for John Paul II high school in Dallas. I believe the dad's last name is Stewart and he played 9 years as a RB for Oakland. He is suffering from ALS and is in a wheel chair. His son is a receiver for JPII, a team that is not doing too well.
The dad is so debilitated by the disease that they arranged to bring him by ambulance to see his soon play. The kid scored on a long reception which was JPII's first TD all season. Dad was just beaming! When the coach talked with his boys after the game about the important things in life, he couldn't keep his voice from cracking. A great feel good story.
The program always showcases one team, usually with 3 players and the coach being interviewed. This week it was Cedar Hill. The format is each player gets one question and the coach gets the first and last question. However, the coach brought six kids and the host admitted that they could only mike three of them. Anyway, these young men were polite and did a nice job in a setting much more intimidating than a football field before thousands of fans. William Cole handled a question about his passing ability nicely.
The only negative to the show was the last comment from the DMN sports writer who was interviewed. He stated that it was almost certain that ET and SLC would not meet in the playoffs as ET would go D1 and SLC D2. He probably doesn't know it, but he has more confidence in Haltom to win the rest of the way out than just about anybody around.
