thanks for that. i hope the townspeople give it more than half a chance. sounds like someone looked at the school system and said, "We need more. Books and pencils aren't enough." GOOD FOR THEM.

also, I emailed the superintendent earlier, giving him some words of encouragement because it doesn't seem like he is getting too many. His email address is below is anyone else would like to do the same, I'm sure he'd appreciate hearing how others support him on the complete opposite side of the country.

Wow! Football in Barrow, AK?! which is 3 or 4 months of 24 hour darkness in the fall and winter. Very interesting... During Football season, they have to play football in the dark all the time if after school and very cold which is normally 20s or 30s until November or early December which is a hard working for football players during cold weather. And also, a game plan whether polar bears appears at practice, thats really interesting. Very Unique town of Alaska and also Continental USA. :) :D

I sent the Superintendent an email, too. I lived in Anchorage for 3 years in the 90's and traveled throughout the state. Just like the Arctic in Canada, the native population in Alaska doesn't have much to look forward to. Alcoholism is a huge problem and drugs have only made it worse through the years. Barrow needs something like that to put their energy into more productive activities.
What they said about how cold Barrow is can not be overstated. I've been on the Arctic Ocean and it's both cold and extremely windy. Barrow will run out of daylight for 83 days starting in early November.
Barrow is 1-3 in football this year. I have to give them credit for beating Sitka 28-24 after losing to them 40-12. BTW, Sitka is about 1400 miles from Barrow by air!:D Even the games against Delta Junction and Valdez are like 900 mile trips by air. Barrow is one of 5 football teams in Alaska out of 29 who aren't on the main highway system and is more than 400 miles away from the closest teams in Fairbanks.

That's why they start football in July or the first of August in Alaska. They play 8 regular season games and have played the first round of the playoffs so far. They should be done in about 2 weeks. I bet the title game is next week.
It's not complete darkness in Barrow yet and further south you never see a day without sunlight. When I was in Anchorage, the shortest days had the sun come up at 10 or 11 and go down around 4 or 5!:D
Around February, the temperatures in Barrow are commonly -60 and -70 plus whatever the wind adds to the wind chill. I think the coldest day in Barrow was -83.
