Coach Jeff Van Gundy believes one of the major reasons Yao Ming's toe is still sore is the sneakers he's wearing.

Van Gundy thinks if Reebok would fit the shoe to his foot better, Yao's health would improve. Ming missed Friday's practice and will sit out Saturday's workout because of the bruised left big toe. Trainer Keith Jones said the center could return to practice Monday.

Just maybe part of Yao's problem is he's 7'6" and playing basketball on a 300 pound frame. In any case, he has a lot of foot problems and will never dominate like he can until then. You can't play football or basketball with bum wheels.

Yao's toe & Tracy's back are two major concerns for the Rockets. They both need to be healthy.

Shane Battier is going to see a lot of minutes at power forward for the Rockets this season.

We have him penciled in as the starter, with Rafer Alston and Bonzi Wells in the backcourt and Tracy McGrady and Yao Ming rounding out the front court. On paper, that looks like a great team and Battier is looking primed for the best season of his career.

Hey, turf toe is serious. Whenever they spray that stuff on them I've seen grown men cry. It's a terrible thing.

T-mac is not going to stay healthy for long. Yao might keep having problems, too. Remember Aikman (back) and Deion (toe).

That is a combustible team. Yao is the man, but might get hurt again. Tmac will probably get hurt. Battier will get abused at PF. He plays hard and does little things, but he's better as a fill in the cracks guy vs. the guy you stick at PF in the West. Bonzi might act OK just because he's playing for a contract. He's injury-prone though. Rafer will never be a great PG.

Yao Ming is going to miss 10 days due to recovery time with another toe nail removal, this time the left one on his big toe.

"I'm told not to be concerned, but every time something happens, it's a longer prognosis than the previous one," coach Jeff Van Gundy said. "We're hoping for the best, certainly. But anyone who is not concerned, anyone who does not have their antenna up, is not seeing the totality of the problem."

Bonzi Wells has been dealing with a groin injury throughout training camp, but appears to be on his way to being fully healthy after participating in Monday's practice.

"Hopefully in the next week or so, I'll get my sea legs, my basketball legs, and be going at full strength,"

Shane Battier made his Houston debut at PF on Tuesday and had eight points, seven boards and two steals.

He looks primed for a big year .

Tracy McGrady had 17 points in Tuesday's loss to the Grizzlies.

TMac says his back problems are behind him and showed no signs of the injury tonight.

Rockets guard Bonzi Wells, who had been working his way back from last season's torn groin muscle, missed Wednesday's practice because of a root canal procedure.

He may miss Friday's game against the Hawks, but of bigger concern is that he's only gone through one full practice with his new teammates due to a lingering groin injury.

Yao Ming had 22 points, seven rebounds, a steal and a block on 8-of-21 shooting in Wednesday's win over the Bucks.

He also hit all six of his free throws and it looks like he's going to be ready to go for the regular season despite some well-publicized toe problems.

Tracy McGrady sat out Wednesday's preseason game against the Bucks

Forward Steve Novak hit 5-of-6 3-pointers on Wednesday and finished with 17 points and five rebounds.

I'm taking my daughter to see them play the Spurs Sunday. I hope Ming plays. We have floor seats, it should be good.

That should be fun. If McGrady with Ming it will be even better.

Shane Battier is being urged to take more shots for the Rockets.

"I think he hurts us by passing up open shots," Jeff Van Gundy said. "He's one of our best shooters."

Rafer Alston played through a head injury on Wednesday and scored 13 points.

He took 13 stitches above his right eye on Friday, but looked good tonight. He hit 4-of-8 shots, 3-of-6 3-pointers and added six rebounds and five assists in a win over the Heat.

Coach Droopy was at it again in an interview about Yao. He then told the hosts of the Morning Show that they "had no heart". They always have him repeat some of the stuff he says after game because they like his R.E.M. outlook on his basketball teams.

Rockets center Yao Ming left a preseason game Thursday night against the Magic with a sprained right ankle.

Yao had 13 points and 4 rebounds when he was injured and left in the second quarter. The extent of the injury probably won't be known until later today.

Luther Head returned to action for the Rockets on Thursday but probably wishes he didn't after missing all 10 of his shots.

He was 0-of-10 from the field and 0-of-6 from downtown off the bench. He did record five boards and three assists, but also had three turnovers. He missed some time for a personal matter, but it's unclear who the opening-night starter will be in Houston.

Dikembe Mutombo got into it with a fan in Orlando on Thursday over racial remarks.

The fan was ejected and Mutombo was clearly upset by the incident. "I am not going to take that," he said. "He was insulting my race, my family, my integrity. For him to call me a monkey...that should not happen today. If I get fined, I will go straight into the stands the next time," he said in closing.

My thoughts are a little different.

Battier is a role player. You don't want him to be your #4 guy. He needs to be around 6 or 7 and maybe as high as #5.

Bozo is a malcontent. He probably will play hard this year to get another contract, but he's been getting hurt a lot and he still does stupid things when he is playing hard, which isn't always the case because he tanked most of his last contract.

T-mac can do a lot, but he's never shown he can win a playoff series. You really have to worry that he'll get hurt again.

Yao took off last year. His feet are still giving him problems and we might not ever see what Yao's full potential is.

Bob Sura (knee surgery) is expected to land the Rockets final roster spot.

Houston is hoping he can bounce back from microfracture knee surgery. He'll make an announcement by Monday. Ryan Bowen and Casey Jacobsen were each waived Friday to free open a spot. If he elects to retire because of his knee, the Rockets would have $4.1 million to use on a free agent.

Rockets exercised their third-year option on Luther Head's contract, extending him through the 2007-08 season.

"When you get extended, it says the team values you," Van Gundy said. "That has to be a positive sign for each player. I'm happy for each guy." Head buried 113 3-pointers in his rookie campaign.

Rockets extending the fourth-year option on Kirk Snyder, extending him through the 2007-08 season.

Houston hopes Snyder can serve as the defensive stopper at the shooting guard. His season was very up-and-down with the Hornets last season.

Yao Ming (ankle) should be ready for the season opener Wednesday.

"It's fine," Yao said. "[Sitting out] was for safety. I was just boxing out for a defensive rebound, and I was pushed from behind. My ankle got bent over too far. It's not a big problem." Keep him plugged in your starting lineups.

The Rockets have still not decided on their fifth starter for opening night, but sharp-shooter Steve Novak may get a crack at it.

Tracy McGrady is calling him the best shooter in the NBA and he's certain to hit a lot of threes for the Rockets this season.

The Orlando Magic season ticket holder that hurled racial slurs at Dikembe Mutombo last week has been banned from attending any NBA games this season.

He also issued an apology to Mutombo and agreed to donate $5,000 to the charity of Mutombo's choice. He got a refund on his season tickets, but probably won't be caught throwing down beers at an NBA game anytime soon.

According to the Houston Chronicle, Kirk Snyder is among the Rockets' starting five.

If he's starting at SG, that would leave Tracy McGrady at SF and push Shane Battier to PF for Houston. Snyder's grip on a starting spot would appear to be tenuous considering the options the Rockets have

Tracy McGrady took a knee to his hip in Wednesday's game and grimaced in pain afterwards.

"I got a knee in the hip," he said. "It hurt, but I'm fine. I'm fine now." He laughed about the incident and 25 points, nine boards, five assists and three steals in the loss. He's fine.
