I'm bored, I'm a football freak, and it's Texas-OU week...
Without further adieu, I give you my breakdown of the Red River Shootout:
Warning! This is LONG and objective
When Texas has the ball...
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
Texas QB's & Receivers vs. OU Secondary:
The Longhorns rank 4th in the nation in passing efficiency and will be facing a Sooner unit that ranks 51st is pass efficiency defense. Texas' ranking may be a bit surprising given the conservative nature of this year's passing attack and the inexperience of McCoy and Snead, but Texas has faced four of the absolute worst pass efficiency defenses in the country in North Texas, Rice, Iowa State, and Sam Houston, who is near the very bottom in 1-AA. Against Ohio State, 21st in the nation against the pass, the Texas passing attack was very pedestrian, producing just 154 yards on 32 attempts.
Based on the competition faced so far, the Longhorn passing attack isn't the 4th most efficient in college football and probably ranks somewhere in the 25-50 range.
Personnel-wise, Texas has great talent at WR, but rarely has this speedy group been able to really show off their game-changing abilities. Part of that may be due to questions about McCoy's arm strength, but most of it is likely to do with the coaching staff wanting to protect an inexperienced QB from making mistakes. This hurts Texas, because teams who've moved the ball successfully against the Sooners have done so by taking shots down the field.
On to Oklahoma's side of things...the Sooners' pass efficiency defense ranking of 51 is probably pretty representative of their actual skill, seeing as how the teams they've faced are generally average in terms of passing efficiency.
In summary, Texas' passing attack rates very highly thus far, but is probably slightly above average in reality. Oklahoma's secondary has been average...not real good, but not horrible.
Texas holds a slight edge here...let's say...
Advantage Texas: *
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
Texas RB's & OL vs OU Front 7:
The Texas rushing offense isn't nearly as dominant as it has been in year's past, ranking just 14th in the nation as opposed to being in the top 3 or 4 as it had been, but losing the presence/threat of Vince Young has alot to do with that. Jamaal Charles and Selvin Young have been very good, but really haven't had any 'WOW' performances as one might've expected...part of that is the fact that they've been splitting carries and, thus, haven't been able to rack up huge yardage totals. Both backs have looked outstanding so far and have actually performed their best against the better teams they've faced (tOSU and Iowa State).
Neither tOSU (42nd) or Iowa State (61st) boasts a particularly strong rush defense, but it should be noted that both rank better than OU at 66th.
For a defense that was supposed to be dominant, OU ranks shockingly low in rush defense, despite facing teams that aren't very good at running the football. Oregon, ranked 8th in rushing offense, is the only team comparable to the Texas rushing attack, and they put up over 200 yards on the ground.
Not only has the Texas OL done a good job opening holes for the backs, they've also done a great job keeping Colt McCoy's jersey clean. The Longhorns rank 10th in the nation in sacks allowed and, suprisingly, the OU defensive front 7 has been particularly poor in creating pressure on opponsing QB's, ranking 97th in the nation in sacks.
Texas appears to have a pretty strong advantage here...
Advantage Texas: ***
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
When Oklahoma has the ball...
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
OU QB's & Receivers vs. Texas Secondary:
For all the concern over the loss of Rhett Bomar, it could be argued that Oklahoma got an upgrade at the QB spot considering the job Paul Thompson has done so far. Thompson ranks 13th in the country in passing efficiency and has thrown TD passes to 5 different receivers. The most dangerous OU receiver is former Longview wideout Malcolm Kelly who ranks 10th in the NCAA in receiving yards and averages a whopping 22.3 yards per reception. Averaging 236 yards per game, and doing it so efficiently, the OU passing game has to be considered a huge surprise and it is definitely to be feared and respected.
The Texas secondary is not without talent, but they would have to be considered a huge disappointment so far. The 'Horns rank 58th in the nation in pass efficiency defense, despite facing only one legitimate passing offense (tOSU), and the entire nation saw what happened there. This may be the single biggest chink in the Longhorns armor.
Advantage Oklahoma: ***
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
OU RB's & OL vs. Texas Front 7:
This looks to be the best and most important matchup of them all. Adrian Peterson has been an absolute beast so far, ranking 3rd in the nation in racking up nearly 161 yards per game on the ground. Many people (myself included) wondered how this could happen with such a depleted offensive line, but you'd have to say that they've performed very well so far this season. The Sooners rank 24th overall in rushing offense and they've been able to give Thompson plenty of time to look downfield, ranking 32nd in sacks allowed. Now, they haven't exactly faced top rush defenses (UW being the best at 36th), but you'd have to say that they've performed very well as a group.
The Texas defensive front 7 has been flat out dominant thus far. The Longhorns rank 2nd in the country in rush defense, 7th in tackles for loss, and 9th in sacks. Despite the Longhorns poor performance in the secondary, the front 7 play has kept Texas' overall defense at 4th in yardage allowed and 10th in points allowed. Having said all of that, while tOSU and ISU are pretty good offenses, OU will be the best offense this group has seen (that surprise you too?). tOSU and ISU are nowhere near OU in rushing offense, but neither gained over 80 yards on the ground (a big part of that was sack yardage however).
Though OU's OL has performed well above expectations, it still may have trouble against Texas' front 7. Peterson is a game-changing back, however, and he can run against anyone. Despite Texas' apparent superiority in this matchup, Peterson nearly negates any statistical edge. That said, Texas has only a slight advantage here...
Advantage Texas: *
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
Special Teams & Turnovers...
I'm running out of time here, so we'll go straight stats:
Oklahoma ranks 37th in net punting, 11th in punt returns, 17 in kickoff returns and 37th in turnover margin.
Texas ranks 2nd in net punting, 9th in punt returns, 35th in kickoff returns and 52nd in turnover margin.
Texas appears to have an advantage when either team punts, and Oklahoma does a better job getting field position on kickoffs. Neither team has been too good in terms of turnover margin, but this is the one area in particular that Stoops' teams have dominated recently.
Advantage OU: *
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
Wrapping it all up (Finally  )...
Texas fans expecting a blowout oughtta tap the brakes a bit. OU's line isn't nearly as bad as we'd thought coming into the year and Paul Thompson may actually be an upgrade at QB. Adrian Peterson is as good as ever, which, in itself, should be worrisome. OU should have successs through the air, especially since Texas will be keying on Peterson. However, the one thing OU was counting on this year, was its defense, which doesn't appear to be nearly as strong as it was thought to be coming into the season. Texas should be able to move the ball pretty well, especially on the ground, and that's one thing that was missing from the 5 game losing streak.
This has all the makings of a classic Texas-OU showdown, but in the end, I think that the Texas running game and its front 7 will be what propels the Longhorns to a victory in what should be a close, hard-fought game. If the Longhorns do not win the turnover battle, it will be very tough to win the game. If OU forces a +2 or more turnover advantage, I don't think there's any way Texas can win since the matchups overall are so tight.
I'll go with...
Texas 23
OU 20
OK, that took forever...so someone, please, read it and give your feedback.

it could be argued that Oklahoma got an upgrade at the QB spot considering the job Paul Thompson has done so far.
This theory will explode in approx. 4 days.
Paul Thompson lost the job after he totally tanked against TCU last year. He will be exposed I assure you. If not for the dump pass to Peterson...Thompson would be blitzed all day. That being said...Texas will only blitz more than one guy a handful of times. Watch out for Robison...all jokes aside...the guy will be all over Thompson.

You cannot judge a QB on 1 freakin' game - and that being his first start! Besides that was LAST year.
Paul Thompson is getting better each week. I expect him to have a good game vs. the shorthorns.
The potholes in the Cotton Bowl will be reserved for Colt McCoy this year. :D

Oregon put up 200+ yards on the ground and 300+ through the air against OU.

Although this will be where OU's joke of a WR/QB gets exposed and throws at least 3 interceptions I have to give OU SOME points because I know Adrian Peterson will make something happen with his feet.

As far as the potholes being reserved for Colt. That is funny. Look at the Texas line man...who is gonna get to Colt?? NOBODY>>>
I predict at least one long return...possibly a TD return for Aaron Ross.
Jermichael Finley has a breakout game...and Jamaal Charles kicks it up a notch for the RRS.
Peterson will get his touches and will be a big pain in the ***.
But that's about all they have....
Malcolm Kelly will be a non-factor and Thompson will be sacked several times.
Just my prediction...
I think Texas wins this one by at least 17...big special teams day for the Horns and it could be much worse.

Oregon's numbers were inflated thanks to the officials.
I didn't realize the officials caused Oklahoma to have a horrid defense, I thought it was the inadequate defense players on OU. Even with that horrible call OU still allowed Oregon to travel 50 yards down the field and score a touchdown. OU's defense is attrocious, Texas will pass AND run ALL OVER THEM.

Some of the people on here are just delusional man.
OU is gonna score 31 on Texas??? You struggled to score that much on UAB...but they are gonna do it to Texas?
You have to keep in mind that most of these people are the same ones that said USC was gonna blow out Texas in the Rose Bowl. How did that turn out for 'ya? Hook 'em...

Short of AD busting lose for 225 yards and 3 scores - which he could do - I just don't see OU winning this game. UT looked very good against a solid Iowa State team - a team that is similar in ways to OU.
I think UT will expose OU's D as average, and OU has no real weapons other than AD.
UT - 24
OU - 14
OU wins if they get a humongous AD day and UT turns it over 3 or more times - I don't see both happening.

You need to quit repeating what others say.
............................|---RUSHING---| |--RECEIVING--|
.............................No. Yds TD Lg -- No. Yds TD Lg
UAB...................... 40 135 1 12 ---- 11 169 1 32
Washington............ 40 204 1 54 ---- 14 180 1 51
Oregon.................. 32 158 2 19 ---- 27 343 2 67
Middle Tennessee.... 28 22 0 19 ----- 6 73 0 22
One bad game on pass defense doesn't equate to OU having a bad defense overall.
How many yards and points did tu give up vs. USC last year? When you have two very good teams going at it, stats can and will go wild.
Teams OU played in 2006:
UAB (2-3, 1-0 C-USA)
Washington (4-1, 2-0 Pac-10)
(11) Oregon (4-0, 2-0 Pac-10)
Middle Tennessee State (3-2, 2-0 Sun Belt)
13-6 Combined record for 4 teams played
Teams tu played in 2006:
North Texas (1-4, 0-1 Sun Belt)
(1) Ohio State (5-0, 2-0 Big 10)
Rice (1-4, 0-1 C-USA)
Iowa State (3-2, 0-1 Big 12)
Sam Houston State (2-2, 0-0 Southland)
12-12 Combined record for 5 teams played
Now at look at tu...
tu vs. Ohio State
tu offense
154 yards passing, 172 rushing = 326
tu defense
269 passing, 79 rushing = 348
Pretty even stats except where it counts - on the scoreboard! :o
For whatever it's worth I'd say Oregon would give Ohio State a better game than tu did. :D

I needed a good laugh to brighten my day. OU almost get's beat by UAB, loses to Oregon, than this guy says Oregon would challenge OSU. FUNNY:)
OU yards allowed and their 'offense'
UAB-304 370 yards gained
Washington-384 435 yards gained
Oregon-501 381 yards gained
Middle Tennesee-95 462 yards gained
1285 total yards allowed
WOW what a powerhouse defense!! Given up more yards in one less game than UT... against easier opponents. Top it off with 500 yards given up against Oregon...oh wait I forgot the officials awarded Oregon the onside kick AND an automatic touchdown, it wasn't the OU defense that let them run down the field 50 yards in 30 seconds.
Lets see Texas defense and offense
UNT-95 410 yards gained
OSU(#1 in the nation)-348 326 yards gained
Iowa State-323 439 yards gained
Rice-168 493 yards gained
Sam Houston-192 419 yards gained
1126 total yards allowed
OU UT
Defense 321.25 yds/game 225.2 yds/game
Offense 412 yds/game 417 yds/game
So UT gains more yardage and gives up significantly less...huh...;)

I needed a good laugh to brighten my day. OU almost get's beat by UAB, loses to Oregon, than this guy says Oregon would challenge OSU. FUNNY:)
OU yards allowed and their 'offense'
UAB-304 370 yards gained
Washington-384 435 yards gained
Oregon-501 381 yards gained
Middle Tennesee-95 462 yards gained
1285 total yards allowed
WOW what a powerhouse defense!! Given up more yards in one less game than UT... against easier opponents. Top it off with 500 yards given up against Oregon...oh wait I forgot the officials awarded Oregon the onside kick AND an automatic touchdown, it wasn't the OU defense that let them run down the field 50 yards in 30 seconds.
Lets see Texas defense and offense
UNT-95 410 yards gained
OSU(#1 in the nation)-348 326 yards gained
Iowa State-323 439 yards gained
Rice-168 493 yards gained
Sam Houston-192 419 yards gained
1126 total yards allowed
OU UT
Defense 321.25 yds/game 225.2 yds/game
Offense 412 yds/game 417 yds/game

Easier opponents? No way! Only Ohio State was a tough opponent.
UNT, Rice and SHS are extremely WEAK teams.

That "attrocious" OU defense is kicking the crap out of tu so far! :D
Let's see OU has 178 total yards to tu's 80 in the 1st half.
GO SOONERS!!!

It's funny they (tu fans) are blaming the coaches when it is the players who are making things happening!

I wish Bob Stoops would shut his big fat mouth. He is acting like a spoilt brat, just because he is losing. Bob look over to the other sideline to see a coach with composure. Message to Bob - perhaps if you coached your players better, your running back with IQ of a donkey would have realized the ball was in play. That touchdown is the equivalent of an own-goal by Peterson.

Colt's coming out party and Texas D was difference.
In garbage time, 2 great funnies for Bevo fans
1) reporter talking about McCoy's choice of colleges with his parents both being from ACU. They told him," you can go anywhere but A&M." They are smart people!
2) the shot of the kid crying in the OU shirt. Funny stuff there...

............................|---RUSHING---| |--RECEIVING--|
.............................No. Yds TD Lg -- No. Yds TD Lg
UAB...................... 40 135 1 12 ---- 11 169 1 32
Washington............ 40 204 1 54 ---- 14 180 1 51
Oregon.................. 32 158 2 19 ---- 27 343 2 67
Middle Tennessee.... 28 22 0 19 ----- 6 73 0 22
One bad game on pass defense doesn't equate to OU having a bad defense overall.
How many yards and points did tu give up vs. USC last year? When you have two very good teams going at it, stats can and will go wild.
Teams OU played in 2006:
UAB (2-3, 1-0 C-USA)
Washington (4-1, 2-0 Pac-10)
(11) Oregon (4-0, 2-0 Pac-10)
Middle Tennessee State (3-2, 2-0 Sun Belt)
13-6 Combined record for 4 teams played
Teams tu played in 2006:
North Texas (1-4, 0-1 Sun Belt)
(1) Ohio State (5-0, 2-0 Big 10)
Rice (1-4, 0-1 C-USA)
Iowa State (3-2, 0-1 Big 12)
Sam Houston State (2-2, 0-0 Southland)
12-12 Combined record for 5 teams played
Now at look at tu...
tu vs. Ohio State
tu offense
154 yards passing, 172 rushing = 326
tu defense
269 passing, 79 rushing = 348
Pretty even stats except where it counts - on the scoreboard! :o
For whatever it's worth I'd say Oregon would give Ohio State a better game than tu did. :D
How about them sooners!! O-Who?
The best parts were seeing the little kid crying in the stands then hearing Bob Stoops whine like a baby about officials for the second time in 3 weeks. haha
