This isn't Southlake vs. Ennis
by Tim MacMahon DMN

Tech's Graham Harrell, coming off a performance that earned Big 12 offensive player of the week honors, got several questions today about the QB matchup with Missouri's Chase Daniel. It might be the season's best showdown between sophomore QBs.

Ennis' Harrell and Southlake Carroll's Daniel had two of the most prolific high school careers in state history. But Harrell said Saturday's game isn't about Ennis vs. Carroll.

"If they want to play Southlake vs. Ennis," he said, "put it on the schedule for a Friday night."

Harrell did make sure to mention the last Carroll-Ennis game -- a 49-17 Ennis win in the Class 4A Division II semifinals his sophomore year.

This isn't right, or is it? Wasn't Southlake at the 5a level during Chase Daniel's sophmore year?

Graham Harrell as talented as he is, was a hot head in HS. I saw him do some things during the Ryan games of 02-03 as well as to Highland Park in 2001 that were flat out embarassing. He was a pompous kid in HS that got away with way to much because of who he was, I did not shed a tear for him when they faltered in 02 or 03 and couldnt help but love how they won state in 04 after he graduated.

maybe pompous is the wrong word, however his actions spoke for his on the field character. these actions included taunting Randy Allen and the HP coaches after every Ennis score in the 2001 game. After the game he continued the trash talking at some HP students and ore coaches.,
In 2002 during the DR playoff game he got into it with one of the Ryan assistant coaches, when he thought the game was over he made some sort of gesture that almost spakred a fight. After the game some jawing continued.
In 2003 at Ennis against Ryan, Ennis was killing Ryan. After consecutive TDs when the game was well out of reach he kept taunting the Ryan sideline. He never ran off the field, he would run to the hash mark closest to the Ryan sideline and throw his hands up as well as made some comments. It was one of the most classless things I had ever seen.

If the Ryan fans were riding him, you kinda have to expect that. He sure was happy on Saturday, too!:D

I would have liked to see Ennis vs. SLC when Ennis was on top of their game. Why not schedule it? I think it would have been a good preseason game for both teams. Before anyone says that 5A state champs would kill a 4A team, dont forget what SL did in 4A, or the fact that 2 4A teams dominated their first year in 5A. 4A has some very talented teams. I think this would have been one very good game. The spread vs. spread. Ennis has the spread down better than just about anyone around.

It had nothing to do with the fans, he had some sort of problem with Randy Allen at HP and their players as well as with Denton Ryan. He did it to Ryan two years in a row and trust me it was no way for any HS kid to act. Anyone who was in the stands for those instances will tell you he did not represent his school or himself well at all the sad thing is it that it seemed like daddy harrell didnt do much to stop it. That is why when they were upset in 2003 by HP I didnt feel sorry for him at all.

2003 was a great Ennis team, they were upset in the regional final by Highland Park shorting Graham Harrell possibly 3 more games but it still didnt stop him from setting single season records in TD passes or passing yards. Their 2001 team with Broderick Jones and Vincent Marshall were very good too. My favorite Ennis team was the 99 team who lost to Stephenville 31-28 in the state semifinals. That team was led by O'Neil Peterson at QB and he was a good one. Stephenville defeated Ennis on a last second 30 yd field goal.
