Katy vs. Taylor Rivalry

Just wondering if the rivalry between these two schools runs as deep as it once did. Just a shade under a decade ago, when only 3 teams were in KISD, the red vs. blue was the game of the year. Since Taylor hasn't won in their past 10 attempts and with purple, maroon, and swan lake mixed in has the old "KT" branding board lost it's significance? Comments from old and young Tigers and Stangs?

I went to a church in a Taylor zone growing up, and have pretty good insight to both sides of it.

It's lost some luster just because the football culture at each school is so different. Of course, the building of new schools has also taken some of the significance away.

All that said, no one from Katy wants to ever lose to Taylor. So, I don't think the Tigers have a problem getting up for the game even though it's rarely even been competitive in the last 10 years. It still means something.

Last year taylor played a good first half against us, halftime it was 6-3.......but then katy stepped up and dominated the second half.

I'm not sure exactly how many, but they do have some guys back. The key loss to graduation was QB Aaron Wright. He was a legit talent they had last year, and his playmaking ability is something Taylor's generally lacked over the years.

Taylor's best returning player is probably DB Wayne McNeil. McNeil led the district in INTs last year. He's a good one.

I love it when we play schools in Katy. Rhodes is much fuller than when we play teams from outside Katy. So it has a real Friday Nights feel to it. I guess I am full of Katy pride when I think of how well our city does on the state level. Katy has won recent state titles in football and made it to the state final in baseball, while Taylor's soccer team won state this year. Lets not forget Cinco and their state championships in track. With that said I believe it is always best when you beat the teams in your home town. So the rivalry is alive and well through out Katy. Next Taylor and in 4 weeks Cinco.:D

That was a sad day in Katy. I was only 10 at the time, but I can still remember how dejected myself and the rest of the crowd looked leaving the game.

haha, in a way the katy/cinco is just as big as a rivalry as the Katy/Taylor.......

The taylor rivalry goes furthur back but the Cinco rivalry is fresh and more tense amoung students ever since the school was built.
It is for me becuase its my senior year and i see Cinco students around town way more than i ever see Taylor students. Also because there are Katy Jr High students at Cinco High now. Cinco just seems to (not trash talk) but just talk a bigger game than they can play.

The Katy - Taylor rivalry doesn't seem nearly as important as it did when I was in school. It used to be the last game of the season, and it was THE game...but no more. That probably has alot to do with the fact that Taylor had recently beaten us back then, but '95 is still the last win the boys in blue can claim. Once they win again, the rivalry will fire back up with a vengeance.

The Katy - Cinco rivalry largely stems from the 'concerns' of many of the original Cinco parents who didn't want their kids to be associated with "those people." Many of them tend to look down their well-cultured noses at the Katy folks, even going so far as wearing overalls and such on gameday. It must really sting that they've never beaten "those people."

Cinco does appear to have a good team this year and I've always admired Coach Clayton from his days as Katy's QB coach/Offensive Coordinator. I always want Cinco to do well because of him.

Some people shouldn't be allowed to post on a popular message board making the rest of Katy look like fools.Those people include freshman football players who think they have already contributed to the tradition of the program by playing good ol' freshman football. Son, please, for mine and other past players sakes, don't post stupid stuff like this on this board and make Katy look like a bunch of morons.

And whoever said the Taylor mustang was painted red...not true...but yes it was stolen. It was my senior year when it happened, and yes something bigger would've happened had Taylor HS not gotten the TEXAS RANGERS involved. Yes, the Texas Rangers, pretty ridiculous I thought. Ya that was my senior year when that happened too. Something about they complained it wasn't fair they had to play us the last game of the season each year or something along those lines. Something like they could've made the playoffs numerous times had they not had to play us the last game of the season every year and that game be the deciding factor many times. They said if they had to play us last in a season, so should others.Good ol' Taylor people...

I hated Taylor and I still do, but like some have said, the rivarly is dieing out it seems and being replaced with Cinco. Both games are always pretty fun though, just wish they'd give us some competititon.

Hopefully cinco will still be undefeated this year when we play them and if they are it will be another sell out game, like in 04 when Katy and Cinco were both 8-0.
Cinco does not have as many play makers like they did in 04 but hopefully we will get a good game out of them.

good rivalries usually go both ways(red sox yankees is the exception to the rule)...and the katy vs. taylor rivalry has been one sided for a long time now and that will diminish most rivalaries....kinda like how Texas doesnt see A&M as there rival anymore...its OU now that they're good again...it will swing back if A&M gets good again and OU falls off.

So basically when Taylor decides to play Men's football again...the rivalry will be back on ....ya, i'm throwin down the smack.

That's funny. Taylor is ALWAYS in a must win situation at the end of the season no matter who they are playing. They never win that last game and never make it to the playoffs. Katy is not Taylor's problem or hurdle to making the playoffs. They need to take a long look in the mirror.

Man, I like this guy. I was thinking the exact thing, don't blame them though you know Coaches got them brainwashed. Definitely not as bad as the Bruno days but Ripp and Moebes are still a pretty good 1-2 punch. A message to the Kid that wrote that, don't worry it'll wear off sometime between your sophomore season and the beginning of Jr. yr. Yeah the horse was never painted red just a hat like in the pictures. Taylor or Cinco keyed a few players trucks and messed with their football signs the next yr though. I say Taylor or Cinco b/c it happened right before the Taylor game but it was most likely planted by cinco. They also destroyed parts of the practice fields with profanity but oh well. The game may not be as exciting as it used to be, which was before my days, but no one wants to be the team to break the winning streak against Taylor, or be the first team to lose to Cinco and especially Creek. Most of all every one wants to be the undefeated district champ.

Someone said that Katy taylor doesnt win the last game of the season, but they actually have won their last game ever since they stopped playing katy the last game. Its worth nothing, but its the truth.

Katy has top tier coaching, thats the bottom line. They motivate and lead better than any team in the state. They have a good off-season program too. I know for a fact that each school in that area has the same caliber talent, there is no arguing that. For the rivalry between katy and taylor to be back, taylor needs new coaching, period.

Taylor gets some good talent. They need to find a way to reverse the football culture at the school and in the community. Obviously, that's not easily done or everyone would have a great program. Again, I went to church with mostly Taylor students and players growing up so I know very well how the program's been run.

Katy's off-season regiment is a huge contributor to the success. I've experienced that first hand, and based on what I've learned of other programs around the state since starting this site back in 2001 I'd say only a very select few programs can really compare to what goes on at Katy in the off-season.

The community is also a huge factor. Katy has a long history of football support for KHS way back before Mayde Creek and Taylor were even built. That has a ton to do with it. The foundation was set a long time ago for what we see today in Katy football.

Taylor got beat soundly by Cy falls, a team that looks like a team on fire I feel sorry for the opponents on their schedule the rest of the year. I dont believe Katy has the talent that Cy falls has so look for a even matched game in the first half. Katy has the edge in coaching obviously, but if Taylors Lane would like to keep his job he may want to try something drastic. I would like to go into more detail about the matchups and everything, but it looks like im the only Taylor supporter on here, so I'd rather not. See ya Saturday

Lane will keep his job no matter what and I have no idea why. There are hundreds of top notch coaches out there who could be brought in in an instant to coach at a KISD school, especially with the resources Taylor has. Lane is a "nice guy" so they will continue to keep him around despite the fact that his team sucks year in and year out. Taylor will NEVER be good with the coaching staff they have in place. Taylor's 2004 team was loaded with an obsurd amount of talent, the kind that most teams would kill for, yet they couldn't even make the playoffs because the coaches are that terrible over at Taylor HS. Lane will be in charge untill the day he retires, which you have to feel pity for the program at Taylor for.

The coaches at Taylor are terrible, and always will be. Their defensive coordinator is deaf in one year, and to top it off can't call a decent defense when the pressure is on. The offensive coordinators tell the quarterbacks exactly where to throw the ball, instead of reading the defense. The only way Katy loses this ball game is if Taylor gets the advantage in BIG PLAYS. They both have played some great teams this year. I can't wait, I was a part of that 04 taylor team, and besides its always more fun to root for the underdog.

Katy came out flat against Alief Taylor, and I highly doubt that happens two weeks in a row. I'm sure the Mustangs would have preferred Katy blow Alief Taylor out to be able to sneak up a little bit.

However, after the way came out against Alief Taylor that particular element won't be there in my opinion. This should be a very intense week of practice for Katy after watching that film.

TXfootball, we'd like to hear about your team if you get time. No harm in repping your school.

What do you think of Camron Sanford at QB? He seems like a pretty good team leader based on comments I've read from him in the paper. Looks to be in the typical Taylor QB mold in that he's one of the better athletes on the team. Looks like he has a nice downfield target in Phillip Supernaw. The secondary appears to be the strong point on defense talent wise. Accurate?

You have a point about how Katy wont be snuck up on. Believe me though, Taylor, along with every other school about to play katy, will practice just as hard. Taylor hasnt shown up in the first half all year, I think they will try to correct that this week, we will see.

Camron Sanford has division 1 talent as an athlete, he has 4.5 speed and excellent vision. He is like past quarterbacks in that he can run, but I see him as being more talented than those in the past. Supernaw is a sure handed reciever. The thing to consider on why the offense has struggled is because they have moved away from their old offensive scheme, which has proven to take time to get used to in this new season. They also lost their top running back right before the season started due to family problems. After last week when the offense exploded in the fourth quarter, I look for the offense to put pressure on the Katy D.

The defense looks very solid to me. They get their best cover corner back in Mcneil this week, and on the other side you have Terrance Byrd who kept up with Cy falls Roger Holland when he had one-on-one coverage. I don't think Katy will try to pass, but will guarantee they will run a trick play of some sort, they always have to break away from Taylors stingy first half defense.

Overall, the game will come down to BIG PLAYS as I said earlier, these two football teams really respect each other(unlike some katy fans) and will play a great game. I think special teams and trick plays will seperate the teams, but as always, watch out for Fuda, Dean, and Sanford to excite the crowd.

I don't doubt Taylor will prepare to give Katy its best shot. If I was in Taylor's position, I'd be tired of getting it handed to me every year and want to do something about it.

Katy will need to be a lot sharper this week (and weeks after) than they were against Alief Taylor. Defensively, that's almost as shaky as I've seen a Katy team recently. That was surprising given Katy's defense played well in the first three games, but maybe it was just "one of those days." Film sessions couldn't have been fun on that side of the room regardless.

The Tiger offense is showing improvements each week, and the QB Mitchell is starting to look comfortable out there. Katy has a very talented group of receivers and a TE who has shown he can make a play, so it's only a matter of time before all of that gets worked into the offense as the unit continues to improve.

I look forward to the game and seeing which team brings it.

Yeah I agree. My main thing with Katy is the ability of RB dean to fall forward, I think that will be key in a lot of first downs. They will have to wear down Taylors defense and Dean is the best way to do that. If we only knew what each coach had in store this would make this a lot easier, but we dont, so I guess we will find out soon enough

You'll see a lot of Dean on Saturday. He's been a true workhorse for the offense so far. As you and most in the area know by now, it's awfully tough to stop a Katy team when the running game is clicking.

I'll be curious to see what new things Taylor's added this year on offense. Aaron Wright looked good back there last year, but didn't have a back to take pressure off of him.

Just wondering if the rivalry between these two schools runs as deep as it once did. Just a shade under a decade ago, when only 3 teams were in KISD, the red vs. blue was the game of the year. Since Taylor hasn't won in their past 10 attempts and with purple, maroon, and swan lake mixed in has the old "KT" branding board lost it's significance? Comments from old and young Tigers and Stangs?

Taylor and Katy kind of came together two years ago over their hatred for Cinco. But on the field they are rivals...off they really don't mind each other.

Just to clarify the "over rated " comment, this is not to say that this team can't get better. However, compared to the state or regional champ teams of the past, (and I've seen them all!) this team is not of that caliber at this time. Other than possibly run defense, this team does no other phase of the game as well as last years team. We have O-line and secondary issues that need to be resolved before playoff time. Fourth and goal from the 1/2 yd line against Taylor (read, not a very good team) and we can't score? A top 10 team should have shoved their D-line into the goal post! The good thing about this team is that they have kept turnovers and (until last night) stupid penalties to a minimum. Those two phases are the only things that kept us from losing to the Woodlands. Two fumbles, a costly clipping penalty on a punt return, (which gave us good field position) and their QB unable to connect with two receivers wide open behind our secondary were the difference in the game. They beat themselves, we didn't. To the credit of the secondary, they did steal two passes from the hands of Taylor receivers. IMO this team will continue to beat teams with unbalanced offenses that favor the run, i.e. AMC. Teams with a balanced attack could pose a problem unless the D-line is able to put enough pressure on the QB and disrupt the passing game.
Previous Katy teams have usually peaked right around playoff time. Hopefully that trend continues and we get a rubber match w/Smithson Valley.

Well okay then...Katy really doesn't mind Taylor or at least my friends who were on the football team and those who weren't. This is the way I see it...Katy and Taylor are the oldest schools in the district which means they should get seniority I guess is what I am trying to say...but Cinco and all the other schools get everything they want! Not to forget they do not respect their elders aka Katy and Taylor. After they way they treated the stangs two years ago. So I figure Katy and Taylor have to stick together *unless they are playing each other or something* becuase if we don't Cinco, Morton, and Seven Lakes will take over.

We are. lol...no but the district is in my opinion trying to bump Katy down to 4A and talking about moving Taylor and Mayde Creek out of the district...which will give Cinco and all them more power...which is what they want. And after all what Cinco wants Cinco gets.

i think a new rivalries will start. the terrible twos; mayde creek vs morton. then top 2's; cinco vs katy. then a blue vs blue per say? taylor vs 7 lakes. That will happen i think next year before any more new schools move in.
