all of you guys from the coastal bend and Houston....please tell me why this school cannot win. They have an enrollment over 4,000 + and have not had a .500 record in three years. in my opinion they should be a state ranked team every year. What can anyone tell me about them????

they are 0-3 again to start the season and have not been close except to McAllen mem. hard to believe with over 300 kids out for football that they cannot at least field a .500 team

Coaching...Plain and Simple

And real enrollment is down to 3600 (From 4400 in 2000). No one likes the MHS system so they leave. That's a lot of kids to lose in 6 years in my opinion!

The football coaches and booster club like to put the blame on consolidation issues, but the other sports haven't skipped a beat.

There have been over 30+ coaching changes in the last year (Not the headcoach). They don't like to bring this little fact up. These coaches must see something in the system they don't like if they leave that fast. Thats a lot of coaches coming and going in a short period of time.

Also, no one in Victoria cares about the Vipers. The attendance in the Classic in SA was pathetic. McAllen brought more people and they traveled 4+ hours compared to 2 for Victoria folks.

On another board, a Victoria poster commented that he has a friend that coaches on a team we played already. He left out the coach and team for obvious reasons. He said the coach told him that when he saw the size of our athletes and their abilities before the game that he wondered how they would win....then he saw HC Jerry Campbell on the sidelines and that is when he knew they had a chance LOL

Last week, we played El Campo and they smoked us. This little school of only 1000 students smoked us BAD in their stadium. It was 26-0 before we scored with under a minute left before halftime. Final score was 47-20. Pretty sad that a little 4A school like that just beat the hell outta you. We play Alamo Heights this Friday night. I am expecting another BLOWOUT!

The way they are playing now Cuero could beat them.

Jerry Campbell is 12-22 at MHS

2003 4-6
2004 4-7
2005 4-6
2006 0-3 (so far)

I think its time for a change.

Good post rage, but you would think that 3,000+ kids should be able to beat a 4a team any week of the year....i looked at what El Campo has, and they are a well oiled machine compared to Victoria, sounds like to me from an outside looking in that the kids and parents have not accepted the consolidation and the Coach is in the middle of a divided town. if there is talent there then it should prevail when you play a 4a team, thats where depth and talent should win over. If they re not competing at a high level then you need to look at the coach and what they do in practice to prepare for a winning week...Sounds like to me they dont know how to win

The blame cannot be pointed entirely at consolidation. All the other sports have competed the same as before consolidation or better. The girls golf team won State like 2 years ago. The boys basketball team went to state a couple years ago. The soccer, volleyball, softball, and baseball teams have all competed at the same level as before consolidation or better. I keep up with all MHS athletics so I would know. We even finished at #6 in the UIL Texas Cup in 2002 which was the last year the Vipers made a deep playoff run in Football (losing to Judson in Quarterfinals). Then Jerry comes in 2003 and things go DOWNHILL from there. Coincidence? I think not. There are a lot of kids threatening to quit football! There is something definantly wrong in Victoria's football program when you have a lot of kids threatening to quit. Things were going up in 2002 and it all has come crashing down during the Campbell era.

The coach is not in the middle of a divided town...not anymore. That is just the excuse he has been using for the last 3 years. It's funny reading his excuses after every loss. I get a good laugh every Saturday morning. Coach Campbell has fallen to politics and is listening to the booster club more than his own coaches...which would explain why so many leave so fast.

The town is not divided over consolidation anymore. All the other sports and groups have their community support and fan base. The fans will come out in droves if you have a winning program. If Jerry could get the Vipers winning then the fans would be there and this wouldn't be an issue. Things will be great. It's not going to be easy though, when a majority of the town was either a Stroman Raider or a VHS Sting (not a Viper). They'll come out in support of the Vipers if you give them a reason to. So far, they have no reason to support a school that can't beat Cuero (if we played them). Hell, probably Shiner could beat us! LOL

El Campo is a pretty good team, but we should be able to beat them. My bro was at that game and he said it was PATHETIC! The worse thing he's ever seen.

I graduated from VHS in 2000, but I have been here supporting the Vipers since Day 1. There are not very many football fans like me in Victoria. I live in SA now.

I thank God every day that I have some excellent SA Football teams to watch LOL

i hear ya from the consolidation standpoint, i remeber the baseketball team from a few years back, my thing still is that when you have kids who are winning in other programs then football should be too. if not then i think there has to be issues within the team and staff to where there is no consistency among either...hang in there, i am sure they will make the playoffs in the Corpus district

There are definantly issues within the staff.

We'll be in the playoffs only because 4 teams go now! LOL :p

One round exit though....again!

there are alot of teams that wont make it that are better then them, thats what is sad about the metroplex and houston, half the schools who dont make it could be dist. champs in corpus and the valley....

good luck rage

Who was the 1st head FB coach after the consolidation. And who is the basketball coach?

RedRage00
09-20-2006, 05:51 PM
Wayne Condra

He was the defensive Coordinater at VHS and was promoted to HC in 1999. He left after the 2002 season and became the defensive coordinator at El Campo. El Campo's HC is former Victoria AD Gillis. El Campo just romped all over us this past Friday night 47-20 LOL

HC for basketball is John Grammar I believe, unless there was a change I don't know about. He's done real well with the team. He's been there since the old VHS. Lead them to a final 4 appearace a few years back. They lost to Reagan last year in the playoffs. Those 2 schools seem to have a little rivalry since they seem to meet every year in the playoffs. I think we lost last year to Reagan by 2 points. It was a close game. The Vipers basketball team is always a threat in the playoffs. They should contend again this year. I believe they are one of the top Region IV teams in basketball.

The boys basketball team has a lot of fan support. It is just not there for football....too much political agenda within the system. No one outside the booster club knows whats going on with the football program.

Coach Condra is a great coach, and so is Gillis...they had a good thing goin abou 7-8 years ago.....i think they won like 40 dist. games in a row at one point.

El Campo is a good team and will probably play Lamarque to get out of the region.

i was just curious as to why over the past few years they have not competed well in football, Rage certainly has good points on the coaches and parents, they can certainly screw a team and program up if they are allowed.

i think this is the first year they have not played an all houston non-district schedule, and are still 0-3

Coach Condra was defensive coordinator at VHS when they had the 41 game district winning streak under HC MARK REEVE who is now at Cuero. Cuero is making noise with him as usual.

Just because you have a bunch of kids and a large school doesn't mean you are going to win football games. There has to be some talent and like the other poster said - coaching!;)
