The West Brook
program is one of Region 3's best turnaround stories of late.
Current head coach Craig Stump took over in 2005 after the
program endured seven consecutive losing seasons (1998-2004).
West Brook recorded two wins or fewer in four of those seven
seasons. In Stump’s first season (05), West Brook posted
an 8-2 record and advanced to the post-season for the first time
since 1997. The Bruins advanced to the third round in that
Hurricane Rita shortened season in which three regular season
games were cancelled. The Bruins returned to the
third round in 2006 and posted a 9-4 record.
And last year, West Brook earned its first double digit win
season (10-2) since 1997. West Brook lost 36-33 in the second
round to a previously unbeaten Fort Bend Clements team.
The Bruins return nine
all-district players from last year’s 10-win team and should field
one of the state's most explosive offenses. Eight starters
return from a unit that ranked 21st in the state in scoring,
putting up 35.7 points per game and averaging 12.6 points above
what their opponents allowed.
Senior QB Christian Louis (6’1 210) and senior RB
Christine Michael (5’11 195) spearhead the group of Bruins
returning on offense. Louis added balance to the offense last
year and passed for over 2,000 yards with a 61% completion
percentage and 18 TD's to just 9 interceptions. Michael is
one of the state's most gifted runners and has rushed for 2,556
yards and 45 touchdowns in two years while splitting carries. This
year, Michael figures to be the feature back, and he is more than
capable of reaching or eclipsing the 2,000 yard mark. Together,
Louis and Michael form one of the state’s best and most
experienced backfield combinations.
When Louis goes to the air,
he’ll have experienced targets in seniors Ryan Grant (6’2 180),
Chris Pinson (5’8 150), and Jordan Garrett (5’11 205).
Christine Michael is also a dangerous receiving threat out of the
backfield.
As impressive as West Brook's skill talent is, the offensive line should be one of the team’s strong
points. Seniors Nick Andrepoint (6’2 245), Markel McCartney
(6’1 250), Michael Broussard (6’1 260), Cedric Franklin (6’3
290) and Chris Durgin (6’2 250) lead a very experienced group up
front..
The defense won’t be as experienced as the offense, but the
Bruins do return key talent on this side of the ball. Senior
defensive lineman Roland Bordelon (6’4 250) earned all-district
honors as a junior and fits the Bruin mold of long, lean and
mean up front. The most experienced part of the defense is the
linebacking crew. Seniors Taylor Reed (6’1 195), Adorian
Underwood (5’11 205) and Malcolm Williams (6’3 195) all have
starting experience. Reed was an all-district selection in
2007. Jordan Garrett, mentioned above at receiver, will
contribute in the secondary also as will Ryan Grant.
West Brook doesn’t field huge
rosters, so it is not uncommon for certain skill players to go
both ways.
A very challenging non-district
slate featuring Westfield , Eisenhower and Katy will launch
West Brook directly into the
season, but they get two of those at Durley Stadium. The lone
road game is at Thorne against Eisenhower. The Bruins scrimmage
Lufkin at home to start. Realignment moved Humble and
Atascocita out of 21-5A, but brought in North Shore. Despite the tough schedule, this Bruin
team has the potential to be Stump’s best squad yet, and it
wouldn’t be shocking if West Brook
emerges as a region contender in Division 2.
