#25 Austin High Maroons

5atexasfootball.com

The Breakdown:

Vitals:

The Maroons enter the 5A Texas Football.com pre-season rankings for the first time since the site was started in 2000.  Austin High earned one of the surprise wins of last season when they knocked off area powerhouse Westlake, 31-24.  The Maroons must travel to Westlake this season and will be out to prove last year was a not a fluke. Austin lost to eventual state semi-finalists Macarthur 21-13 in bi-district.

Five returning first team all-district players form the core of Austin’s 2007 group.  Senior running back Davis Collins is one of the Maroons’ top returning players along with senior WR Trey Cannon.  Also, junior Emory Blake (son of former NFL QB, Jeff) takes over at QB giving Austin a true dual-threat.  Senior LB Hayden Bowers is the leader on defense, and is one of the state’s most productive linebackers.

Austin High proved it could play against some of the region’s best last season, and also gained the confidence from beating city rivals Westlake.  It will be tough to pull that off at Westlake again this season, but they return the talent necessary to build on last year’s effort.
