The 2006 season should
be used as motivation for future Chaparral teams to help them
understand what the word team truly means, and that starts
with this 2007 group. The commitment and determination shown
by Westlake last season to rise above the setbacks and firmly
re-state their case as one of the elite programs in Texas was
nothing short of phenomenal. Now, the mission will be to
first take back district and then try to make another run at
state. There are some big shoes to fill, but this is
Westlake.
With Nick Foles headed to Michigan State, naturally one of
the hot topics is finding who will be taking his place.
Senior Walker Kobelan (6’0 170) is the favorite to take over.
Talented junior Ryan Swope appears set to take over at
tailback. Swope has very good speed like the Chap’s back the
last two seasons prior, Max Minor. Senior Jordan Etier is the
top returning receiver. Senior OLs Forrest Justice, Ross
Cooper and Spencer Kainz will help shore up another strong
line. Defensively, senior linebacker Mike Joyce, senior DL
Mark Daniel and DB-K Justin Tucker are some of the most
experienced players. Tucker is also one of the best kickers
in the state.
The Chaps served notice that the program is very much
alive and well last season, and have a good enough nucleus of
experience to build the 2007 team around. Leadership appeared
to be a huge key in the Chaps success last season, and they
will need more of the same in 2007 if they are to make another
run. Probably the most pressing question going into the
season is what will happen with the quarterback position, and
whether or not Kobelan will provide the answers. Also, the
Chaps need promoted sub-varsity players to add much needed
depth to what is normally a smaller roster when compared to
other major 5A programs. However, we expect Westlake to
compete for the district crown and be a handful in the
playoffs. |
