The Carter Cowboys are our favorites to win DISD’s district
championship. Under Allen Wilson, Carter has been outstanding
in district play and they should continue that success this
fall. Although they were hit hard by graduation, Carter
returns 26 lettermen, but just one All-District player, OT
Rodney Alexander. As usual, Carter is loaded with huge
offensive linemen and plenty of talented skill guys. Juan
McHenry is Carter’s top returning rusher, but look for
Denarius Clark, Lubbock Smith and Anthony Miller to get plenty
of carries as well. The Cowboys’ title hopes will once again
come down to their annual showdown with Skyline in what
promises to be another great game.
Skyline
nearly took the title away from Carter last fall, but came up
short on a 2-pt conversion attempt and lost 17-16. Skyline
returns 25 lettermen and 3 All-District performers including
LB Spencer Reeves and DE Keanon Cooper. Cooper and Reeves
alone make the Skyline defense formidable enough, but Skyline
also returns highly-coveted DE Alfred Dupree. Leading the
Skyline offense will be Seagoville QB transfer Troy
Stoudermire, who rushed for 2,100 yards and 35 TD’s as a
junior. Skyline came close last year, but don’t be surprised
if they unseat Carter as district champs in ’07.
In 2006, Molina enjoyed both their first
winning season and their first playoff berth. Their winning
ways could continue this fall as 25 lettermen and 3
All-District players return. Molina’s strength will be their
offensive line led by Oscar Orozco and Robert Garfras. The
offense will be lead by either Daniel Acevedo or Josh Evans at
QB. Jr. RB’s Xavier Watkins and Jarvis Hall hope to give the
Jaguar offense some spark.
Dallas Sunset returns one of the
district’s top overall players in RB/LB Rossun Johnson.
Johnson is the district’s only returning 1,000 yard rusher and
is the only player in the district to have earned All-District
recognition on both sides of the ball. With Johnson, Sunset
has a chance to compete for the final playoff spot, but they
didn’t win a single district game last year. If the rest of
the team can improve, there’s no reason the Bison can’t claim
a spot in the postseason.
WT White had a rough 2006 season, but most
of their key players return this fall. The Longhorns return 6
All-District players including QB Zach Tally and WR Andrew
Davis. Eduardo Trejo, Tommy Payne and Dylan Barth return to
lead the defense. The Longhorns have got to improve quite a
bit both offensively and defensively to claim the fourth
playoff spot, but given how much they return, that is within
reach.
Dallas Bryan Adams made the playoffs last fall despite a 3-7
record. They managed to beat Sunset and White by a combined 3
points, putting them into the postseason. The Cougars lost
most of their key players and only 18 lettermen return, so if
they’re to get back to the playoffs they’ll have to do it with
a pretty inexperienced group. |
