The date (11/12) is correct but day and time are wrong for Langham Creek vs. Alief playoff game.
It should be: Langham Creek vs Alief Taylor, Crump Stadium on Saturday 11/12/2011 @ 6:00pm
(Information from http://www.cyfairtickets.com/).
Thanks for the corrections!
Every since they added a 4th team to make the playoffs, the Texas playoffs are a joke. How is it possible for a team to go 2-10 and make the playoffs? And its pretty sad that they are playing against a team the went 4-6.
It certainly waters down the playoffs. We are certainly in favor of the way it used to be.
If a 4 teams from each district were not in, Spring Westfield would not have made it in and there in the Regional finals!
Just shows you don’t have to take care of business during the regular season and still get a shot at the state title. Should be top 2 teams for each district in the playoffs not slackers that got lucky!
It is not possible for a team to go 2-10, since there are only 10 games in the regular season.
it doesnt matter how many games you win, it matters that you win the ones that count
When will Division 2 previews be posted? (sorry if I missed it)
Thanks!
They are posted. See the Playoff Homepage for links to them. You can get to the playoffs homepage through the front page.
2012 Picks…..
Div 1:NR Converse Judson loses to Allen.
Div 2: Cibolo Steele repeats vs sacrificial lamb!
Recall, I picked the State Champs 2 years in a row!
LOL
My bad, Thought “The Rockets” had a special team this year.
I’m new to TX HS football…whats the differnce between 5a Div. 1 and 2. I noticed Div. 1 has 6 top 10 teams and Div.2 has 4…with the number 1 team Katy. Shouldn’t 1 & 2 rated teams at least meet in the playoffs.
Thanks
The difference is in the enrollments of each school. There are 32 districts in the state, each have anywhere from 6 to 10 schools in each district. Four teams make the playoffs from each district. Of the four that qualify, the two schools with the larger enrollments go to the Division 1 bracket while the other two go to the Division 2 bracket.
Katy was the 3rd largest school that qualified out of District 19-5A, so that’s why they went Division 2 this year.
In short every team in each district is ranked based on population in that school. If there are 8 schools then they are ranked one through 8. Then the schools with the four best records are taken. So out of those four schools that made the playoffs the two with the highest rankings within their own district will go Division I and the other two Division II. So basically it is based on size or population. So one year a team like Katy could be Division I and the next year Division II because their population ranking within their district is four(4).
Also Division I is not always or necessarily better every year than Division II.
Why doesn’t Texas just create a 6A Classification? There are two many schools in 5A, and having two champs for 5A is ridiculous. (I’m obviously not from Texas originally but live here past six years). Thanks for any replies.
That’s a great question and one that may be answered sooner rather than later. Adding another classification like 6A has been kicked around by the UIL for the last few realignments, but it’s not something they’ve decided to add just yet.
They havent made a 6A because there are not enough schools that have the enrollment size to be classifide as a 6A school right now you just have a hand full of schools that have 3500+ students and that means the teams will have to travel basically to different cities or on the other side of the state just to play a football game and the schools dont want to have to pay that much just to play a football game.
Why not just add one more round to the playoffs? Div.I champ plays against Div.II champ and there you go. One state champion.
Absolutely a great idea, it could be called the Texas High School “Super Bowl” or something like that. Both Div’s could still be classed as a DI and DIi State Champ, and the winner of “TEXAS BOWL” overall state champ.
It will never happen however.
My understanding is the biggest problem with having a 6A classification is they schools are too spread out. There are not enough in a central location, 2 out in West Texas, 3 or 4 in North DFW area, 2 in South DFW area, etc. If you draw the line at say 3000, or 3500 you don’t really fix the problem as then you have a school with 3000 kids against a school with 6000 kids, still a big gap. In all the years that they have had this system I would not say the big schools win at a higher % then the smaller schools, even when playing each other. Probably someone could pull the data on that
its simple,
so some of the favorites can be a champion too. politics as usual!!!!!
There aren’t a whole lot of teams that would meet the 6A requirement for enrollment. Of those that would meet that, the travel cost involved in making a district with those teams are not feasible. Basically, it comes down to money.
I know Katy last year was in division on. Have they always been in the past in Division 2 like this year, which always quilify’s them going against the smaller div 5 schools?
Springs fan, yes they have been D2 quite a bit lately. They are right in the middle of their district as far as enrollment, so they can go either way each year. Their championship in 1997 came in the D1 bracket, others in D2.
I am a little curious why certain schools in TX such as Allen, the Plano(s), Dallas Skyline are allowed to grow to such large enrollments without being busted up into smaller schools?
Allen for instance, their latest enrollment was 5,049, Plano East 6,171, Plano 5,240, Plano West 4,190, and Dallas Skyline 4,765?
It seems to me that these schools enjoy an unfair competitive advantage due to their large enrollment figures, especially Allen.
Originally I am from NM, a town of less than 75,000 yet we have 3 high schools, which compete at the 5A level. I now live in the Houston area, near Katy, TX. I follow the Katy program and was a little dissapointed that Katy would not be competing against some of the other upper top 10 teams in the state, since Katy is number 1 in the state, and ranked nationally, this doesn’t make sense to me.
With so many teams in 5A, it reminds you of Division I college teams (FBS or whatever it is now). Too many teams just so they can say the are D-I or in this case 5A. Obviously you get more exposure being in 5A, play at bigger venues, more revenue I suppose. They realign based on enrollment. so teams get a taste of 5A for two years and then may have to go back to 4A if enrollment dips. Ridiculus. That is what has made these top heavy dominant 4A teams that came back from 5A. (See Lake Travis, Denton Ryan). 6A classification would even things out IMHO.
They don’t want to create a 6a which i think they should have done 15yrs. ago, because that means less schools in the playoffs. less schools means less revenue at every level. It’s all about the money!
is the Del Rio Rams a team to take seriously?
Never take a valley team seriously…
Actually, I prefer the current DI, DII twin championships…However it would be cool to have a “battle-royal” where both champions play have a game to rule them all. All to be held at Jerry’s World…And of course we would call it the HS Super Bowl!!
I don’t mind the DI-DII championship idea, but the current format has the finals the weekend before Christmas. So another game would necessarily be pushed back to Christmas or between Christmas & New Year’s Day weekends, which presents major difficulties such as family conflicts, travel, etc. Not to mention that delaying until later would push into college and pro bowls/playoffs, which would make the HS “championship” disappear. Status quo is probably best.
Also, I think the championship games should be rotated around the state, even west Texas. Jerry’s World, Reliant, Alamo Dome, Darryl Royal Stadium, Sun Bowl. Kind of like the major professional golf tournaments that rotate around the country. This way, everyone would get a chance to see TX high school’s best.
alief taylor vs houston memorial
who’s likely to win?
Watch out for laredo alexander as they take on cibolo steele that one is sure to be a nail bitter if you guys can make the trip to laredo friday to witness one of the biggest games of divison 2 playoffs besides the championship!
Del Rio had a great football team this year, losing to Div 4 finalist Harlingen 37-34 last week. Harlingen went to sleep, and almost lost. Overall Del Rio is a solid program. They have nothing to hang their heads about this year. It’s Texas Football at it’s best.
Are the Harlingen Cardinals just lucky as everyone says they are. Someone was saying that they are just a middle of road team, and should not have beaten Warren. They say Madison will just walk all over Harlingen, is this true?
it is true that the cardinals took a nap through most of the del rio game. they allowed del rio to run two kickoffs back for td’s. i think the close win over abilene in the regular season, combined with two decisive wins in the playoffs (los fresnos, warren) proves that they are legitimate. they have beaten three outside of the valley teams,(abilene, warren and del rio) along with destroying the other teams in their district. they have set a rio grande valley record for most points in the season, a number that they themselves set the last two years. this has been a four year journey to where they are at. they have three straight 10-0 regular seasons, and have a 47-5 record for the last four years, three of those losses being the playoff game that sends them home. they have a perfect storm of players, heart, and determination. dont count them out this friday.
The Cardinals aren’t lucky they are just damn good. You (San Mav) must be from San Antonio… Wait till Friday when Harlingen stomps all over Madison
I would normally agree because they are from the Valley. However, this Team is good and Warren was overrated. Madison has alot of Athletes but you never know what will show up. It is going to be a track meet. I think Harlingen will win.
2 champs in 5A since ’90. But, if population was a driving force to championships, then the Plano’s and or the Alief’s should alternate yearly winning the trophy since they have some of the largest enrollments in the state….
to all those that say harlingen was lucky, that warren should have won did you see the score 53 – 28. that is not luck that my friends, that is a well coached team. say what you want harlingen won that game fair and square.
The Cards are for real…lucky or not this school has an enrollment with 2,600 kids and is still playing with the big boys. I think Texas should create a 6A with 3500kids and more. I don’t think there are any schools south of San Antonio that have that kind of enrollment that’s nearly half of Texas.
One more thing I think that the Harlingen Cards have a great chance at showing up to the big show. The Cards face a 9-4 SA Madison with losses to 2 Div 2 schools and one 4A school. All to say that these schools are still good programs. The stage goes to the Cards at Kingsville.
Card by 4.
Next to face is the winner of two 11-2 teams. High tower lost to Eisenhower who ended the season 5-5. Pearland looks to be the contender with both losses to teams that made it past the 2nd round of the playoffs. One being the Might Mcallen Memorial Mustangs finishing the season at 12-1. Great season guys!
Harlingen vs Pearland…to be continued
UPDATE: Both Harlingen and Pearland have been Eliminated!!
Hightower vs SA Madison…to be continued.
GO CANES!!!!!!!!
@ San Mav… You have obviously have not done your homework on Harlingen. First of all, any team that has made it to the 4th round is because they are a good team. While I feel that we were a better team than Del Rio and given that all the prognosticators thought it would be a blowout, no team in the playoffs can be underestimated. Del Rio is NO exception. They came prepared and ready to play. They had a really good defense, excellent special teams, and a good offense. They almost pulled of the win. Nevertheless, my hats off to them. You, of all people should know that games are not played on paper. They are played on the field. Everyone thought that Judson would beat Madison handily, but like it is said, “That’s why they play the games.” No one ever really knows what the turnout will be. As for our victory over SA Warren, if you were to watch video, you will see that Coach Gomez came up with an excellent defensive game plan to make things difficult for Rex Dausin. The players studied it, and executed it well. I’ve watched video on your team, and you all are very good as well. Good luck to both teams, and may the best team win free of injury. CARDINAL SPIRIT NEVER DIES!!!
Instead of 2 Divisions with 4 participants from each District, they should decrease this to only the top 3
from each District, and cut Texas into 8 Regions.
How is it that El Paso Franklin played Arlington Bowie in Region 1, 2nd round when they are 650 miles apart? The 8 Regional Champions could square off at sites closer to their geographic areas, until you get to the final 2.
You have the final score switched for Carroll and Martin on your bracket. It’s Carroll 31 – Martin 14
thanks
Don’t worry about it, they won’t have to face Cibolo Steele! No worries mate. LoL
del rio will be back strong next year. coach hoffman is doing a great job with this kids.
Has anyone got the enrollment numbers for all Texas High Schools? Couldn’t someone get it from the UIL under a public information request under the freedom of information act?
Not wanting the brackets just enrollments. It could be a great game to have a contest to see who could come the closest to guessing what actually happens.
