Offensive MVP:
RB Devan Demas, Sr., Creek

Defensive MVP:
DL Dave Blacklock, Sr., Falls
Who’s In:

1. Woods – The Wildcats have yet to go out before the 3rd round since their inaugural season in 2008 . They must replace QB Huntsman, but those stepping in have experience. The defense is in for a big improvement behind nine returning starters.

2. Fair - If we could predict a 1a, 1b, 1c finish…the Bobcats would be 1b. They enter the season in a great spot as far as returning talent and experience. The only spot that’s a question mark is at QB. All other pieces are in place for another good season.

3. Falls - Everything starts with dual-threat QB Troy Mitchell, but doesn’t end there. Overall, this is a very talented bunch that finished last year right around +5 on offense and -5 on defense. With the experience returning, that bodes well for 2011.

Fighting It Out:

4. Cy Creek – Adversity struck early last season when star RB Jermichael Selders was lost to a season ending injury. In stepped RB Devan Demas who helped lead the team to a share of the district title. He’s back for another 1,500+ yard, 20+ TD season.

5. Langham Creek – A top QB at this level is very difficult to stop (see Pearland ’10). Junior QB Connor Feist is a star in the making after rolling up 2800 yards of offense and 28 touchdowns as a sophomore. Eight starters return on each side of the ball.

6. Ridge - The Rams’ 6-5 record last season was a little deceiving. two losses by one-point (Langham Creek & Alief Taylor) and another loss by four points. They are breaking in a new QB, but can lean on junior RB Rennie Childs early.

Work to do:

7. Jersey Village – RB Victor Brown and junior FS Latravien Gee
8. Ranch – Top 2013 prospect RB Keith Ford is a player to watch
9. Lakes – keep building program in year 2
10. Springs – low on numbers in a very deep district

7. Aldine MacArthur (7)

Offensive MVP:
RB Jerry Bynum, Sr., Elsik

Defensive MVP:
CB Greg Allen, Sr., Taylor

Who’s In:

1. Eisenhower - There’s a lot going on with this team…a new HC, replacing QB and a D that needs improvement. It might be a risky pick, but the talent is undoubtedly there to make it all work. Sophomore RB Donald Catalon is a star in the making.

2. Taylor - A talented and experienced senior class exits, but the Lions have established themselves as an emerging program capable of reloading. It shouldn’t shock anyone if they’re able to retain the district title.

3. Elsik - RB Jerry Bynum has been starring for the Rams since his sophomore year and has yet to miss the playoffs. Fourteen returning starters should be plenty for another postseason berth.

Fighting It Out:

4. Hastings - Yet another very talented and experienced team in 18-5A. RB Jaquaries Johnson and WRs Terrance Marshall and Stephen LaFleur will give the new QB plenty of attacking options.

5. Nimitz -The Cougars should certainly be in a position to challenge for a playoff spot in ’11 due to quality depth. Much of that depth returns on the defensive side of the ball which is sure to improve last year’s #2 ranked unit in 18-5A.

Work To Do:

6. Aldine – 13 starters back and could give top 4 a run for money
7. MacArthur – experienced, but very tough to break-through
Alief Taylor (10-2, 6-0)
Aldine Eisenhower (6-5, 5-1)
Alief Hastings (6-5, 4-2)
Alief Elsik (4-7, 2-4)

8. Katy Morton Ranch (8)

Offensive MVP:
RB Adam Taylor, Jr., Katy
RB Boomer White, Sr., Memorial

Defensive MVP:
LB Brandon Ebrecht, Sr., Katy

Who’s In:

1. Katy - We know you didn’t see this one coming (sarcasm), but we’re projecting the Tigers to win the district. Big game experience, top notch ground game and defense is the winning formula once again. They do need a couple skill guys to step up.

2. Cinco Ranch - QB may be a question mark heading into the season, but there’s talent on campus. Rebuilding depth is key, but the building blocks are there in star junior RB James, WR Ludowig, DB Cuellar, and LB Ilesanmi, and junior DB Thomas.

3. Houston Memorial - Once again, the Mustangs will field a solid defense to go along with a good ground game. However, replacing the dual-threat talents of QB Wayne Taylor and all he meant to the offense remains a big question mark.

Fighting It Out:

4. Taylor - 2011 could mark their fourth straight year in the playoffs after largely missing out since the mid-90s. They know what it takes to get over the hump and that shouldn’t be underestimated. Having said that, it’ll come down to Week 10.

5. Seven Lakes – Different year, same scenario. Qualification for the playoffs will likely come down to the final day of action against Taylor. Junior RB John Oglesby is another in a line of good backs in this district.

Work To Do:

6. Strake Jesuit – lack of depth makes it an uphill battle each year
7. Morton Ranch – can individual talent come together as a team
8. Mayde Creek – experienced, but still a long way to go
Katy (13-1, 7-0)
Katy Cinco Ranch (10-2, 6-1)
Katy Taylor (6-6, 4-3)

2. Houston Bellaire (5)
3. Houston Madison (3)
4. Houston Chavez (4)
5. Houston Westbury (6)
6. Houston Westside (2)
7. Houston Milby (7)
8. Houston Sam Houston (8)

Offensive MVP:
QB Demun Mercer, Jr., Chavez

Defensive MVP:
DE Chema Uzowhie, Sr., Lamar

Who’s In:

1. Bellaire - The Cardinals are a team to watch in the Houston area this year. As 16 returning starters would suggest, they were a very young team that showed promise late last season. They are talented at the skill positions and disciplined on defense.

2. Lamar - The Redskins have been among Houston’s best for a long time now. A big reason for that is their HC Tom Nolen and consistency on defense. The QB position is a spot that needs to be worked out.

Fighting It Out:

3. Chavez - Coach Jackson moves on to La Marque, but junior QB Demun Mercer returns after a breakout sophomore campaign (2800 total yards, 33 TDs). Derrick Coleman is an explosive athlete sure to get plenty of touches this year.

4. Westside - Their 2-8 record last season came as a real surprise considering they qualified for the playoffs in the seven seasons prior. Too much talent (RB Catalon & WR Gray) and experience (14 starters back) not to qualify.

5. Westbury – A young Rebel squad moved up from 4A and narrowly missed out on the playoffs. 15 returning starters has them well-placed to fight for the final playoff spot.

6. Madison – It’s hard not to foresee the Marlins in the playoffs given that they’ve qualified in six straight seasons. However, the rest of the district will be improved and they need some playmakers to step up on both sides of the ball.

Work To Do:

7. Milby – short on numbers which makes it very tough each year
8. Sam Houston – it’s good to see the Tigers back and playing ball
Houston Lamar (9-2, 7-0)
Houston Bellaire (6-5, 6-1)
Houston Madison (6-5, 5-2)
Houston Chavez (6-5, 4-3)
Houston Westbury (6-4, 3-4)
Houston Westside (2-8, 2-5)
Houston Milby (1-9, 1-6)
Hou. Sam Houston (0-10, 0-7)
1. Houston Lamar: + 10.2
2. Houston Chavez: + 9.0
3. Houston Westbury: + 0.7
4. Houston Westside: – 2.0
5. Houston Madison: – 4.0
6. Houston Bellaire: – 5.8

8. Hou. Sam Houston: – 23.8
1. Houston Lamar: – 14.5
2. Houston Bellaire: – 7.6
3. Houston Madison: – 3.8
4. Houston Chavez: + 0.1
5. Houston Westbury: + 6.7

1. North Shore (2)
2. La Porte (3)
3. Beau. West Brook (1 )
4. PA Memorial (4)
5. Channelview (6)
6. Baytown Sterling (5)

Offensive MVP:
QB Terrence Singleton, Sr., PA Memorial

Defensive MVP:
LB Jarius Moore, Sr., North Shore
Who’s In:

1. North Shore – Don’t be fooled by the lack of numbers returning on offense. The Mustangs’ success is built on defense and it’s one of the toughest in the state. This will always keep them near or at the front of the pack.

2. La Porte – Keep an eye on the Bulldogs this year. They have a great mix of young talent, experience and production. They have what we think is a winning formula, a strong ground game and defense.

3. West Brook - The Bruins are always a talented bunch and that keeps them right in the mix on a yearly basis. It’s not out of the realm of possibility that, with lower expectations and being stronger in the trenches, this team can better last year’s 8-4.

4. PA Memorial - QB Singleton (Baylor) and RB Holmes (Arkansas) put up close to 4000 total yards and over 40 TDs. Both are back and significant improvement on defense could make them a real contender.

Work to do:

5. Channelview – lost to top four by an average of 22.5 points
6. Sterling – winless in district in ’10 and rebuilding
North Shore (11-2, 5-0)
La Porte (9-3, 4-1)
Beau. West Brook (8-4, 3-2)
PA Memorial (9-4, 2-3)
Channelview (1-9, 1-4)
Baytown Sterling (2-8, 0-5)
1. North Shore: + 13.1
2. Beaumont West Brook: + 5.6
3. Baytown Sterling: + 3.3

6. Pasadena (3210)

How we fared in 2010…
Actual Finish (Projected Finish)

1. Pasadena Dobie (3)
2. Pasadena Memorial (2)
3. Deer Park (1)
4. South Houston (4)
5. Pasadena Sam Rayburn (6)
6. Pasadena (5)

Offensive MVP:
RB Thaddeus Stewart, Sr., Memorial

Defensive MVP:
LB Casey Westmoreland, Sr., Deer Park

Who’s In:

1. Dobie – The Longhorns look like the favorite once again after finishing 2010 with an undefeated district record. An impressive 21 point victory at Deer Park in Week 10 really separated them from their closest competitor. 11 starters return.

2. Deer Park – The last time the Deer took the field, they lost a tight one to North Shore in the playoffs. That’s something the 10 returning starters can take confidence from. Experience in the backfield and a good LB unit provides a good foundation.

3. Memorial - The Mavs have been a fixture in the postseason recently and Coach Snelson will have his group back once again in 2011. RB Thaddeus Stewart averaged over 9 yards per carry as a junior last season.

4. South Houston - The reduction of teams in 22-5A after realignment really boosted the Trojans chances of postseason play. They took advantage last season with two district wins and that’s enough to get in from a six-team district.

Work to do:

5. Sam Rayburn - qualified for playoffs five times since 1964
6. Pasadena - should be improved, but likely won’t be enough
Pasadena Dobie (8-3, 5-0)
Pasadena Memorial (6-5, 4-1)
Deer Park (7-4, 3-2)
South Houston (5-6, 2-3)
Pasadena Sam Rayburn (5-5, 1-4)
Pasadena (3-7, 0-5)
1. Pasadena Memorial: + 3.7
2. Pasadena Dobie: + 2.5
3. Deer Park: – 1.9
4. South Houston: – 5.5
5. Pasadena Rayburn: – 7.2
6. Pasadena: – 14.6
1. Deer Park: – 6.8
2. Pasadena Dobie: – 6.0

How we fared in 2010…
Actual Finish (Projected Finish)

Zone A
1. FB Elkins (2 )
2. FB Hightower (1)
3. FB Kempner (3)
4. FB Marshall (4)
5. FB Willowridge (5)

Zone B
1. FB Travis (3)
2. FB Bush (4)
3. FB Dulles (2)
4. FB Clements (1)
5. FB Austin (5)

Offensive MVP:
QB Bralon Addison, Sr., Hightower

Defensive MVP:
DB Corey Thompson, Sr., Elkins
Who’s In:

1A. Elkins – The defending Zone A champs look like a good bet to repeat with the amount of talent returning. The offensive side of the ball is stacked with QB Burkhalter, WR Allen and OL Matthews. The defense is led by all-state DB Corey Thompson.

1B. Travis – Although Travis didn’t finish with the district’s best record, they won the zone championship game over Elkins. With 16 starters back, Travis is the clear cut favorite to play in the zone championship from Zone B.

2A. Hightower - On the arm and legs of QB Bralon Addison (Texas A&M), the Hurricanes will be the top offense in the district once again. They are in the tougher of the two zones and will be the primary challenger to Elkins for the top spot.

Fighting It Out:

3A. Kempner - This is another talented Fort Bend squad that has some potential. While not an offensively explosive group, they have the personnel to really put things together on the defensive side of the ball.

4A. Marshall – This might just be the most talented team in 23-5A and that’s saying a lot in a district loaded with talent. There’s at least seven guys that will go on to play FBS football. Will all of that individual talent equal team success in 2011?

2B. Bush – We see the Broncos as the lone challenger out of Zone B for the final playoff spot. They were well placed last year, but dropped their final two zone games and lost in the playoff to Hightower. Some good individual talent on each side.

Work to do:

3B. Dulles – talented, but will find it difficult in this structured
4B. Clements – in rebuilding mode with an eye on 2012
5A. Willowridge – tons of experience back to improve on 1-9
5B. Austin – look for sophomore RB DeAndre Williams

3. Dickinson (4)
4. Clear Creek (5)
5. Clear Brook (7)
6. Brazoswood (3)
7. Clear Lake (6)
8. Alvin (8)

Offensive MVP:
RB Tyrell Preston, Sr., Dickinson

Defensive MVP:
LB Kendall Ehrlich, Sr., Pearland
Who’s In:

1. Pearland - The defending D1 state champs have a little bit of a rebuilding job to do offensively, but that’s something they’ve done successfully many times. The big-time experience, confidence and talent on defense can carry the load if needed.

2. Springs - One of the real up-and-coming programs in the Houston area continues to produce high quality football players. The next one to grab headlines will be sophomore QB Cripps. His numbers will be boosted by targets like WR Johnson (Texas Tech).

3. Creek - The Bad: The Wildcats lose a special athlete in CJ McElroy to graduation. The Good: Creek returns just about everyone else. Eight returning starters on the district’s 2nd best defense will keep them right in the mix.

Fighting It Out:

4. Dickinson - The Gators are low on numbers compared to the rest of the district, but returning production at QB and RB gives them a slight edge for the final playoff spot. Maintaining last year’s level on defense should be enough to get them in.

5. Brazoswood - You can usually count on good defense from the Bucs. As we’ve mentioned many times, that almost always keeps you in the running for a playoff spot. They have a backfield to rebuild, but there’s plenty of talent available.

Work To Do:

6. Brook – usually hovers around the .500 mark
7. Lake – undergoing transition on offense, could be a wildcard
8. Alvin – junior RB Corey Jackson is one to watch
Pearland (16-0, 7-0)
Clear Springs (8-3, 6-1)
Dickinson (6-6, 4-3)
Clear Creek (9-4, 4-3)
Clear Brook (5-5, 3-4)
