The Woodlands, formerly Conroe McCullough, have made the playoffs every year since 1995.  From 1999-2003, the Highlanders won two regional championships and qualified for the D1 state finals in 2003.  Since then, they haven’t made it out of the second round despite fielding some very good teams in 2008 (9-2), 2009 (11-1), and 2010 (10-1).  The program produces plenty of talent and is well supported, so it’s really only a matter of time before the Highlanders make another deep run.

SCHEDULE

9/2 @ FB Hightower

The Highlanders won’t face another quarterback all year that is as elusive as Texas A&M commit Bralon Addison. Defensive discipline will be tested.

10/7 @ Lufkin

A budding rivalry since Lufkin joined The Woodlands in district in 2004.  Lufkin has the 5-2 edge in the series, but the Highlanders have taken the last two meetings.

10/28 vs. TW College Park

Cross-town rivals, the Highlanders have lost only once in a total of five meetings between the clubs. This is the normal pattern for a new program, but it’s only a matter of time before the Cavaliers catch up.

2011 Schedule:
8/25 vs Monterrey Tech (MEX)
9/2 @ FB Hightower
9/9 vs Strake Jesuit
9/16 vs Tyler Lee
*9/24 vs Humble Atascocita
9/30 OPEN
*10/7 @ Lufkin
*10/14 vs Conroe Oak Ridge
*10/22 @ Humble Kingwood
*10/28 vs TW College Park
*11/4 @ Conroe

THE BOTTOM LINE

Offense: Much like Abilene, the Highlanders are basically starting over on this side of the ball.  Three year starter RB Daniel Lasco heads for the Cal Bears and QB Joseph Schneider also graduates leaving two key spots to fill. Four of five offensive line starters are also gone.  The Highlanders have several guys competing for the starting quarterback spot in junior Jayme Taylor, Cooper Woodyard, and Lance Miles.  The speedy and reliable Blake Webb gives the quarterback an option on the edge that can take it to the house at any given time. Woodyard is also a prime candidate to take over running back duties, along with Randy Cooper and Ryan Trauffler.

Defense: Although only three full time starters return, several more have seen a significant amount of playing time. The Highlanders should be strong in the front seven with guys like DL Mitchell Meyers (9.5 sacks) and LB Garrett Hope (67 tackles, 2 ints, 4.5 sacks, 3 forced fumbles) returning.  Linebackers Robbie Goldschmidt and Brandon Taylor both played significant minutes last season rounding out a unit that should be the highlight of the team.

Overrated if: The right leadership doesn’t step up. Talent is never an issue in this program.

Underrated if: Lower expectations on paper work in their favor. This is a group that will have to earn it on the field and that could be what’s needed to get the Highlanders over the hump.

What does it matter with this coaching staff?
They can’t play with the big boys until they get coaches
    that can coach.
Six years and only two playoff wins !!!

  2. Bob says:

Its not like they are losing to bad teams in the playoffs though. 2005 they lost to A&M Consolidated who went 11-3. In 2006 and 2007 it was Spring Westfield which was 13-1 & 10-3. Then Stony Point in 08&09 which was Top 5 in the State. Finally Klein Oak who finished in the top 15 and could be top 10 this year.

So The Woodlands haven’t been underachieving as much as it may seem. They just have played really good teams in the first two rounds. They weren’t even favored to win in alot of those losses
