Stony Point’s first varsity season was in 2000 and really took their lumps until 2007. Over their first seven seasons, they totaled just 12 wins. In 2008, 2009 and 2010, the Tigers eclipsed that mark in each season. In 2010, they also set a club record of wins in a season with 14. The Tigers have played in three straight state semifinals, which is a great achievement for Coach Chessher and his staff.

SCHEDULE
|
9/16 vs DeSoto The Tigers will have some time to settle in with their new group, but a huge match-up with DeSoto looms in Week 3. STP nearly won last year’s contest by 20 on the road. 9/23 vs RR Westwood The Warriors enter 2011 with a team that looks very good on paper. It all starts with all-state QB Ben Johnson. How will STP handle DeSoto, then Westwood back-to-back? 10/14 @ Leander Leander played Stony Point to their closest district contest last season losing by only 3 points. Leander always has talent and can pull a surprise. |

THE BOTTOM LINE
Offense: For starters, the Tigers are replacing both quarterbacks, Sam Kelley, Stephen Williams, and the whole front five. Stony Point will to tap into it’s 10-0 JV team to fill the holes. Specifically, they’ll look to juniors QB Christian Ahrens and RB Xavier Mays to lead the program over the next couple of years. The Tigers have proven lately that they can reload without much drop off, so we have no reason to expect otherwise. Personnel-wise, they’re starting over on offense, but they’re doing so with talent most of the state would be envious of.
Defense: Although the Tigers are only bringing back four starters on defense, they are very important ones. DE Scottie Tatum, first team all-state junior MLB Marcos Curry, junior DB Wesley Moore, and first team all-state DB Brian Jacquet (8 ints). In addition to these four, several others have starting experience. The Stony Point defense has been dominant for three years now despite new faces and we expect that to continue.
Overrated if: The Tigers fall off defensively following three dominant seasons.
Underrated if: The new guys on offense step up and continue where those before them left off. It’s unrealistic to expect this from the opening whistle, but they can certainly be there come playoff time.

I think after a possible slow start Stony Point will win or at least compete for their district title and enter the playoffs on all cylinders. There is entirely tooo much talent in their system to have a big dropoff. Maybe another long playoff run could be in the works.
