SCHEDULE

8/26 vs Coppell

Last year’s contest finished with a combined 13 points. Inexperience at quarterback could lead to a similar output.

10/14 vs Longview

The Lobos beat Horn by 5 in district play and later eliminated the Jaguars by 14 in the regional finals. Horn doesn’t have to travel this year.

10/21 @ DeSoto

If you like very high scoring, competitive games, this one’s for you. These two have combined for 171 points in two games with only 21 points separating them.

2011 Schedule:

9/2 @ Lake Highlands
9/9 @ Lewisville Hebron

THE BOTTOM LINE

Offense: A big part of the Horn offense is in the screen game and the skill position talent has been top notch the last two years with wide receivers JaCorey Shepherd (Kansas) and Jakeem Grant (Texas Tech). With that kind of talent on hand, it’s hard to believe that Horn was among the worst offenses in 5A ball just five seasons ago.  This season, a player who will become a household name among fans is sophomore QB Destri White.  White filled in as a freshman against Stephenville (4A), Tyler Lee, and Longview for a hurt Collin Strahan and led the team to a 2-1 record.  He’s an impressive dual threat guy and will be helped by four starters returning along the offensive front.  Shephard and Grant are gone, but talented skill guys such as Devante Harris (recently committed to Oklahoma) will help fill the void.  TE Vincent Hobbs (6’3 225 4.7) may prove invaluable to his young quarterback.

Defense: They lose a few key guys in Stephon Sanders (SMU) and Kyle Boyd (Baylor), but the groundwork has been set for future classes to continue to build last year’s defensive success.  We touched upon Devante Harris for the offense, he’s also the team’s top defensive back and he’s headed to Oklahoma in 2012 as a lock-down corner. The linebacker unit is in very good shape with three of four returning, including two all-district players in Jones and Lovett.  These guys will need to come up big working behind a young and inexperienced three man defensive front.

Overrated if: The Jaguars can’t physically survive their brutal schedule.  Come playoff time, their record could be very deceiving just as it was a year ago.

Underrated if: Both sides of the ball continue to show progression and contribute equally like they did last season. Horn ranked 35th in adjusted offensive scoring and 39th in adjusted defensive scoring.  Twelve returning starters makes that possible.
