Collins played its first varsity season in 2002 and signaled its potential as a program early by winning five games in 2003, then eight games in 2004. However, for the next three seasons (2005-2007), they would only win five games combined and fall back under the radar. In 2008-2010, the Tigers bounced back in a big way winning 6, 12, and 11 games, respectively. This recent run includes back-to-back undefeated district championships.

SCHEDULE

9/23 vs Klein Oak On paper, Oak looks like the primary challenger to Collins on the district front. The Tigers have won three in a row while holding Oak to single digits each time. 9/30 @ Spring DeKaney DeKaney is still looking for their first win against Collins after three tries. The focus for Collins will be on stopping all-everything RB Trey Williams. 10/14 @ Klein The tide has turned recently in this rivalry. Klein won six of the first seven meetings, but Collins has taken the last two by comfortable margins. |

THE BOTTOM LINE
Offense: This was an explosive offense last season with several gamebreakers capable of taking it to the house on any play. It was by far Collins’ most successful season in terms of offensive production. Prior to 2010, the Tigers were below average offensively and really had to rely on their defense to carry them. Two of the three guys that led the offensive turnaround return in QB Tyler Stehling and RB Shane Rhodes (committed to Boise State). Collins is hoping that junior Marcus Goodson (younger brother of the Carolina Panther RB Michael Goodson) fills the shoes of graduatng RB Marquise Cardinal. Behind every good offense is a good line and the Tigers will be looking for depth from the lower ranks.
Defense: When taking a look at each level of this defense, there’s highly productive experience returning. That’s great news for a defense that has performed very well the last three years in a row. Despite losing all-state David Santos (Nebraska) to graduation, all three other starters return at linebacker. Everett was an all-district performer last season and Nebel will be a three year starter this fall. If that wasn’t enough, all-state candidates DT Jose Ybarra and FS Ryan Santos will also be three year starters in the fall. DB Jordan Thomas (5’11 170) started at corner as a freshman and is expected to be a top recruit in his class (also see Cedric Collins, Skyline). This combination of leadership and young talent makes this another potentially formidable Collins defense.
Overrated if: The Tigers don’t protect the ball. Anyone that saw these guys play late in the season knew that they were a team capable of big things. That was the case until they ran into a surging Austin Bowie and turned the ball over six times. That’ll earn an early ticket home every time.
Underrated if: If the defense regains it’s dominant 2009 form (-13.09 ADS) which is very possible with this group.

KC looked good in spring ball and Tyler threw the ball well behind a young o-line. The o-line will need to jell over the summer and become one unit. The defense will be around the ball every play bottom line. Young and hungry kids add depth and will have to be ready to go at a moments notice which will be easy under Coach Svoaboda and his staff.
We feel good about the program Svoboda is building over there at Collins and that they’ll be ready to roll in the fall.
I went to see Charles Jackson (Nebraska signee) in KC’s opening playoff game and found Jordan Thomas! A 14 year old freshman starting in this program? Wow. On the first play of the game he caught a ridiculous one handed interception. Freshman…are you kidding me! I can’t wait to see the encore this year.
