Cy Woods played their first varsity season in 2008.  They’ve wasted zero time getting out of the blocks winning an average of 9.5 games since opening.  In three seasons, this program has qualified for two regional finals in a row and went three rounds deep in their inaugural year.  The recent opening of Cy Ranch cut into Woods’ depth, but the Wildcats are now a big player in Division 2 (most likely) moving forward.

SCHEDULE

9/2 vs A&M Consolidated

Consolidated recently named former Cy Falls coach Dave Raffield their new head man. Woods will face a spread based Consolidated team, instead of the option look they saw in ’10.

9/10 @ Cy Falls

Falls beat a short-handed Woods by eight last year.  The Golden Eagles are expected to be a contender for the district title, so this early season tilt carries big importance.

9/17 vs Cy Fair

This is another crucial September game for Woods. Cy Fair brings back a good amount of experience, like Woods, and are expected to contend for the district title along with Falls.

THE BOTTOM LINE

Offense: The Wildcat offense was slowed early in the season due to an injury to star QB Colton Huntsman.  This year’s projected starter, Gabe West, totaled 520 yards passing, 404 yards rushing, and 11 tds while filling in.  RB Jeff Bogan (800 total yds, 11 tds) is another guy that isn’t considered a returning starter, but saw significant playing time as junior.  These two along with three returning starters up front and two on the perimeter should provide an always dangerous offense with plenty of firepower.  OT Jimmy Schmitzer (6’2 320) is an all-state candidate.

Defense: Overall, the Wildcats have performed just above average on defense in three seasons.  According to our adjusted defensive scoring stat, their best year was in 2009 which currently stands as their winningest season to date.  With nine starters (could call it 10) back in 2011, this year’s group should go down as the best in the programs’ brief history.   Up front is 6’4 230 DE Cody Small, as well as both interior linemen from last season in White and Villarreal.  Behind them, all three backers in the 4-3 look are back, including 1st team all-district Dylan Skidmore.  In the secondary, Holley and Davis started the whole way with Tompkins and junior Pullom starting eight and four games, respectively.  It’s very rare to see this kind of experience returning and it should really pay dividends

Overrated if: The loss of Huntsman proves too much to overcome. He was such a big part of the offense for two years and in his absence early last season, Woods was 2-2.

Underrated if: Defensive improvement and a playoff trip to the D2 bracket puts the Wildcats in a great position to outperform this ranking.
